Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Today should make four days in a row without significant rain developing across Southwest Florida, setting us up to see another hot and mostly sunny day.

Sunshine will be prevalent from the morning into the afternoon, and temperatures will rise sharply through the day with highs peaking in the low to mid 90s for most of the region.

The few storms that do form today should stay deep inland near Lake Okeechobee and Alligator Alley.

Even though we'll see mainly dry weather today, there's still plenty of humidity packed into our atmosphere, which will make the air feel several degrees warmer.

Winds will be westerly today around 5-110 mph.

Rain chances will gradually make a comeback through the course of the week. Some isolated storms will develop Wednesday afternoon but mainly over interior sections of the peninsula.

The uptick in rain chances will be more noticeable by Thursday and Friday as a few storms develop a little closer to the coast.

With plenty of sunshine expected for the remainder of the week, temperatures will stay hot yet seasonable with highs in the low to mid 90s and lows close to the mid 70s.

Tropical Update

The Atlantic basin still looks free of any kind of tropical development, and we should see a quiet conclusion to the month of June in the Gulf, Caribbean, and Atlantic. Return to index of stories...

TOOSHLIGHTS-ON CAM

IT'S PART OF LIFE. NOT AN ENJOYABLE ONE BUT WE'VE ALL DEALT WITH THE FRUSTRATION AND EMBARRASSMENT OF HAVING TO FIND A VACANT STALL IN PUBLIC RESTROOMS.

BUT JANE WELLS IS TELLING US ABOUT A START-UP. THAT OFFERS A HIGH-TECH SOLUTION TO THIS LOW-TECH PROBLEM. Return to index of stories...

TOOSHLIGHTS-PKG

WE SPEND A LOT OF TIME IN THE BATHROOM.

YET IT REMAINS AN UNTAPPED BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY. FOR EXAMPLE, ISN'T THERE AN EASIER WAY TO FIGURE OUT WHICH STALLS ARE EMPTY?

"You need to use a restroom in a public facility and the line is extremely wrong."

A MUSICIAN TURNED ENTREPRENEUR THINKS HE HAS AN ANSWER.

"If the facility cares about their patrons, who wants them to do this? Do you want them to do this? Do you want to peek through here?"

ALLEN KLEVENS AND HIS BUSINESS PARTNER NOTICED THAT PARKING LOTS COULD SIGNAL OPEN SPOTS, SO THEY CREATED TOOSHLIGHTS, A SIMILAR SYSTEM FOR THE BATHROOM.

"You walk into the stall. You close the door. You lock the door and voila the light turned red."

UNLATCH THE DOOR.

AND THE LIGHT TURNS GREEN. YOU DO HAVE TO LATCH THE DOOR FOR THE LIGHTS TO WORK.

"If you're that stupid enough to not lock the bathroom door, you deserve to get walked in on."

KLEVENS AND HIS PARTNER DISPLAYED A CAN DO ATTITUDE, SELF FUNDING DEVELOPMENT OF TOOSHLIGHTS IN THE LOW SIX FIGURES. AN APP IS COMING. THEIR FIRST CUSTOMER IS THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL. NO PUN INTENDED.

BUT TOOSHLIGHTS AREN'T CHEAP, COSTING A FEW HUNDRED DOLLARS A STALL TO INSTALL. KLEVENS SAYS, HOWEVER, THE SYSTEM DELIVERS MORE THAN LIGHTS, IT TELLS STADIUM OWNERS WHERE PEOPLE ARE GOING.

"So that they're able to build their business. whether it's concessions, whether it's selling t-shirts, beer, coke, etc., outside to gear them which restroom to go to.

"How do you or anyone in line know which stall is available?"

AND WHILE TOOSHLIGHTS ARE MEANT FOR BOTH THE MEN'S AND WOMEN'S RESTROOMS, THIS IS A MUCH BIGGER DEAL FOR WOMEN, AM I RIGHT?

"Are you the one that keeps your foot on the door when you're in the bathroom."

"I'll keep my purse like right near the edge, so like hello, I'm in here!

KLEVENS HOPES THAT IF TOOSHLIGHTS PERFORMS WELL AT THE BOWL THIS SUMMER, HIS BUSINESS WILL GET THE GREEN LIGHT TO EXPAND.

JANE WELLS, CNBC, BUSINESS NEWS, HOLLYWOOD. Return to index of stories...

LISA KULIK HAS BEEN LEGALLY BLIND FOR MORE THAN 30 YEARS. BUT SHE NEVER GAVE UP HOPE.

"I knew that all along that with the technology that one day there was going to be something that would come along."

IT DID. IN THE FORM OF THIS BREAKTHROUGH TWO PART DEVICE CALLED THE ARGUS 2 RETINAL IMPLANT WHICH IS PLACED INSIDE THE EYE TO QUICKLY CHANGE A PATIENT'S LIFE.

"Patients are then able to make out obstacles and really increase their mobility."

DURING THE SURGERY DOCTOR LISA OLMOST DE KOO ATTACHES THE IMPLANT TO THE PART OF LISA'S RETINA THAT WAS DAMAGED BY HER DISEASE. THE IMPLANT THEN ACTS LIKE A BIONIC EYE TRANSMITTING IMAGES TO LISA'S BRAIN.

"So the brain has to relearn this kind of visual information."

THE SECOND PART OF THE DEVICE IS THEN MOUNTED ON A SPECIAL PAIR OF GLASSES.

"It has a camera which captures the images then sends it wirelessly to an implant in the eye"

WHEN THE IMPLANT RECEIVES THE IMAGES, LISA SHOULD SEE LIGHT AND DARK SPOTS.

DR. MARK HUMAYUN; WHO IS PIONEERING THE TECHNOLOGY WILL THEN HELP LISA TRAIN HER BRAIN TO TURN THOSE SPOTS INTO SHAPES AND OBJECTS.

"The implant was put in just a week ago and today we are going to see if Lisa can see for the first time in decades"

HUMAYAN TURNS ON THE DEVICE.

OVER TIME SHE'LL SEE OBJECTS SHAPES AND MOVEMENT

GREAT WHITE ENCOUNTER-ON CAM

IT WAS AN ENCOUNTER A GROUP OF NEW JERSEY FISHERMEN WILL NOT SOON FORGET.

A GREAT WHITE SURFACED RIGHT NEXT TO THEIR BOAT THIS PAST WEEKEND--

AND STARTED CIRCLING IT.

AFTER ABOUT 20 MINUTES OF TENSE WAITING--

GREAT WHITE ENCOUNTER-PKG

"Uh-oh he's gonna get take our chum bag."

IT WAS A FACE-TO-FACE ENCOUNTER WITH A GREAT WHITE SHARK. ONE THAT BROUGHT SOME BITE.

"He grabbed our chum bag."

"The only time it really made us nervous at all was at the point where it did get a hold of the chum bag because it was directly cleated to the boat."

STEVE CLARK WAS ABOUT 30 MILES OFF THE COAST OF CAPE MAY SATURDAY EVENING WITH FOUR OTHERS WHEN THE SHARK SWAM UP.

" Watch out. He could come out. Get back. Get back."

AT 16-FEET LONG, AT WAS ABOUT HALF THE SIZE OF THEIR BOAT.

"We were worried that it was going to harm the engine. It started to mouth it, but it wasn't actually biting down."

"There does seem to be some clear evidence their numbers are naturally increasing"

THIS SIGHTING COMES AFTER THE NATIONAL OCEANIC AND ATMOSPHERIC ADMINISTRATION RELEASED A STUDY THIS MONTH FINDING THAT AFTER DECADES OF DECLINE, THERE'S BEEN A RESURGENCE OF GREAT WHITES IN THE OCEAN OFF THE EAST COAST.

SCIENTISTS SAY CONSERVATION EFFORTS AND ABUNDANCE OF GRAY SEALS WHICH THE SHARKS EAT ARE LIKELY FACTORS.

"Is there more danger to people who go to the beach and go swimming in the ocean?"

"I would say absolutely not. You actually have a much better greater chance of being struck by lightning than being attacked and killed by a white shark,"

"Wherever the food is that's where they are going to go."

THE HEAD OF THE BRIGANTINE MARINE MAMMAL STANDING CENTER SAYS THOSE INVOLVED IN THIS ENCOUNTER ARE LUCKY IT WASN'T WORSE.

"They could come right out of the water. I mean, great white have been known to leap completely out of the water." Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-CLIP
