FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Another hot, humid and hazy afternoon is setting up across Southwest Florida. Much like Monday, areas west of I-75 should remain warm and dry. Communities far to the east of the interstate bear a better chance for some late afternoon showers or thunderstorms.

Mostly sunny conditions should dominate into the afternoon, with temperatures rising sharply through the day. Highs are anticipated to peak in the low to mid 90s for most of the region.

The few storms that do form today should stay deep inland near Lake Okeechobee and Alligator Alley.

Even though we'll see mainly dry weather today, there's still plenty of humidity packed into our atmosphere, which will make the air feel several degrees warmer.

Winds will be westerly today around 5-10 mph.

Rain chances will gradually make a comeback through the course of the week. Some isolated storms will develop Wednesday afternoon but mainly over interior sections of the peninsula.

TROPICAL UPDATE

The Atlantic basin still looks free of any tropical development, and we expect to see a quiet conclusion to the month of June in the Gulf, Caribbean, and Atlantic. Return to index of stories...

HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF BABY BOOMERS WILL BE SIGNING UP TO RECEIVE THEIR SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS THIS SUMMER.

IT'S IMPORTANT TO HAVE A GOOD UNDERSTANDING HOW YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS WORK, OTHERWISE, YOUR RETIREMENT COULD BE AT RISK.

JIM NOLTE WITH WELLS FARGO ADVISORS IS HERE WITH US TODAY TO TALK ABOUT SOME OF THE CRITICAL ISSUES, IN THE COMPLICATED PROGRAM. Return to index of stories...

WELLS FARGO-PLASMA CG

· I remember in the 70s when my parents signed up for Social Security. They literally went to the social security office and signed a few papers and that was that. Today it's a lot more complicated.

· Each day thousands of Americans apply for the first time for Social Security benefits and many applicants have no idea what they're getting into. It is a complex program and there are many different ways to collect benefits.

· Add to that the chronic staffing and service problems with the Social Security Administration, and we have an extremely frustrating and confusing situation.

· The sad fact is that most people spend more time planning a vacation than they do planning for 20 or 30 years of social security benefits.

· Here's some of the critical issues to consider:

· The social security administration does not give personal financial planning

advice.

· The primary job of the Social Security Administration is to deliver a service, paying benefits to beneficiaries, not financial planning. I can't tell you how many times I've heard clients tell me that the Social Security administration never told me that I had options.

· The fact is that the Social Security has a great website with loads of information about benefits. I believe they are doing the best they can in various field offices to answer the public's questions by telephone. But you can't count on a detailed planning discussion concerning your individual financial goals and the Social Security benefits you are about to receive. What most people need is a basic summary about how Social Security benefits work, what are the best personal strategies and what are the potential pitfalls.

· We have to realize that the social security administration is stretched very thin at the worst possible time. In the last three years the Social Security Administration has lost about 12% of its workforce. Much of this is due to federal budget constraints.

· Here's a scary statistic, by 2022, close to the peak of baby boomers retiring, about 60% of the administrations supervisors will be eligible to retire.

· And if you've tried the 800 number, the average wait time exceeded 10 minutes.

· There are some positives. There is a growing number of resources, tools and services outside the Social Security Administration, to assist soon-to-be retirees. Some are free some aren't.

· In recent years, AARP, the Washington-based advocacy group for older Americans has introduced very sophisticated online calculators that help baby boomers determine how and when to claim benefits.

· The bottom line is this - your Social Security benefits are an important part of your retirement plan. Decisions you make when you sign up for Social Security will have an effect on your retirement as long as you live.

· Social Security benefits paid out over your retirement years can amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

· I think your best decision is to discuss your Social Security strategy with your financial advisor 12 to 18 months before you retire. Return to index of stories...

ASIANA CRASH-VO IN TC MON TC REVEAL

THE CAUSE OF THIS DEADLY AIRPLANE CRASH WAS RELEASED TODAY.

FROM THOSE RESULTS, NBC2 HAS LEARNED INVESTIGATORS BELIEVE THE PILOTS AND THE PLANE'S MANUFACTURER, BOEING, SHOULD SHARE THE BLAME.

THIS ASIANA FLIGHT LANDED SHORT OF THE RUNWAY IN SAN FRANCISCO LAST YEAR.

FEDERAL INVESTIGATORS SAY "MISMANAGEMENT" BY THE PILOTS CAUSED THE CRASH.

BUT THEY ALSO BLAME THE COMPLEXITY OF THE CONTROLS OF THE BOEING 7-77.

PILOT TRAINING ALSO FOUND TO BE AT FAULT.

JAY GRAY GIVES US A CLOSER LOOK AT THE NEW FINDINGS. Return to index of stories...

ASIANA CRASH-PKG

NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION SAFETY BOARD INVESTIGATORS NOW SAY IT WAS PILOT ERROR THAT LED TO THE DEADLY ASIANA AIRLINES CRASH LAST YEAR.

DURING A PUBLIC HEARING THIS MORNING. NTSB OFFICIALS REPEATEDLY REFEREED TO THE PILOT'S LACK OF UNDERSTANDING. AND "MISCONCEPTIONS" ABOUT THE AUTO-PILOT SYSTEMS ON THE BOEING 777 -- AS FLIGHT 214 APPROACHED SAN FRANCISCO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT.

"This was a seasoned flight crew with a good safety record yet they misunderstood the relationships of the automated systems that they commanded. They also failed to work together to monitor and respond to their deteriorating situation."

THREE PEOPLE DIED. MORE THAN 180 WERE INJURED IN THE CRASH.

AND NOT ALL OF THE PROBLEMS WERE IN THE AIR.

TWO PASSENGERS NOT WEARING SEAT BELTS WERE EJECTED FROM THE PLANE ON IMPACT.

ONE DIED AFTER BEING RUN OVER BY TWO FIRE TRUCKS RESPONDING TO THE ACCIDENT.

THE OTHER WAS LEFT LYING ON THE TARMAC - PRESUMED DEAD. BUT INVESTIGATORS SAY THERE WAS A WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY TO TREAT THE PASSENGER.

THE AIRPORT HAS TAKEN STEPS TO ADDRESS PROBLEMS WITH ITS EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS. AND RESPONSE.

AND DESPITE THE TRAGIC EVENTS OF THAT DAY.

INVESTIGATORS POINT OUT 99-PERCENT OF THE PASSENGERS ON BOARD SURVIVED.

"The traveling public should know that when the unexpected happens and airplanes do crash, most crashes are survivable."

AS THE SAFETY BOARD.

"Thank you for a very good meeting. we stand adjourned."

CONTINUES TO LOOK FOR WAYS TO MAKE SURE IT DOESN'T HAPPEN AGAIN.

SALLY KREUSCHNER/CHILD ADVOCATE

RUNS:

1:55 We promote children getting used to water about 6 months of age. At that point parents can teach their children to turn, flip up over and float. We really recommend children getting swim lessons around 4 years old because that's when they can grasp the concept.

THE 5 LIFESAVING SKILLS INCLUDE: TREADING WATER FOR 1 MINUTE, JUMPING INTO DEEP WATER AND COMING BACK UP, SPINNING AROUND AND FINDING A WAY OUT, GETTING OUT OF A POOL WITH A LADDER, AND SWIMMING THE LENGTH OF THE POOL WITHOUT STOPPING.

ASHLEY CARBY/MOM

RUNS:

2:56 I've already started doing the intro into swimming lessons. Each year they get better and better and stronger.

WHILE PROPER SUPERVISION IS ALWAYS CRUCIAL- GVING YOUR KIDS SWIM SKILLS CAN BE A LIFE-SAVER. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...

SEARCH ZONE-VO IN PLASMA

IT SEEMS HARD TO BELIEVE.

BUT IT'S BEEN MORE THAN 3 *MONTHS SINCE MALAYSIA AIRLINES FLIGHT 370 DISAPPEARED. ALONG WITH THE 239-PEOPLE ON BOARD.

AND STILL NOT A SINGLE PIECE OF WRECKAGE HAS BEEN FOUND.

N-B-C'S TOM COSTELLO IS EXPLAINING WHY SEARCH COMMANDERS ARE NOW SHIFTING THE SEARCH ZONE. Return to index of stories...

SEARCH ZONE-PKG

107-DAYS SINCE MALAYSIA AIRLINES FLIGHT 370 DISAPPEARED AND SEARCH COORDINATORS ARE RECALCULATING THE PRIORITY SEARCH ZONE TO AN AREA CALLED THE 7th ARC.STILL ROUGHLY 1,200 MILES OFF AUSTRALIA.

-WORKING OFF THE INMARSAT SATELLITE HANDSHAKES or PINGS WITH THE PLANE BEFORE IT DISAPPEARED, COMMANDERS SAY IT'S UNLIKELY THE PLANE IS MORE THAN 23 MILES TO THE WEST OR 34 MILES TO THE EAST OF THE ARC.

THE THEORY: THE PLANE FLEW HIGH AND FAST ON AUTO-PILOT, THEN RAN OUT OF FUEL AND CRASHED.

BUT SARAH BAJC, THE LONG-TIME GIRLFRIEND OF AMERICAN PHILIP WOOD, IS SKEPTICAL:

"We don't have proof that it crashed in the water at all. There's been not a trace-- not a tiny, tiny bit of evidence that it's crashed in the water."

CAPTAIN ZAHARIE SHAH REMAINS ONE OF THOSE AT THE CENTER OF THE INVESTIGATION.

:

"Hi everyone."

U.S. SOURCES SAY DELETED FILES RECOVERED FROM SHAH'S AT-HOME FLIGHT SIMULATOR SHOW HE'D PRACTICED FLYING INTO REMOTE AREAS OF THE INDIAN OCEAN, BUT THEY POINT OUT HE'D PRACTICED FLYING MANY OTHER ROUTES AS WELL.

AND THERE DIDN'T SEEM TO BE A REPEAT PATTERN.

NOTHING IN CAPTAIN SHAH'S FINAL WORDS TO AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLERS SUGGESTED ANYTHING WAS WRONG:

:

KL ATC: "370, contact Lumpur radar 132.69."

MH 370: "132.6, Malaysian 370."

NOW, 3-months LATER, THE BEST HOPE MAY BE WITH THOSE FAINT SATELLITE HANDSHAKE PINGS:

"The fact is that they're using new technology and new math to try to use data that was never intended to track the aircraft with definite specificity about its location."

AND DESPITE ALL THE TECHNOLOGY, THE NEW UNDERWATER SEARCH ZONE COULD STILL BE A WHOPPING 20-THOUSAND SQUARE MILES! Return to index of stories...

COP RESCUES WOMAN-PKG

POLICE OFFICERS FIND THEMSELVES IN PRECARIOUS SITUATIONS ALL THE TIME.

THE DIFFERENCE HERE IS -- EVERY HAIR-RAISING SECOND WAS CAUGHT ON CAMERA.

"He stepped up to the plate and he showed what he's made of."

EARLY SUNDAY MORNING, A CITIZEN FLAGGED DOWN RICHMOND POLICE OFFICER RAMON MORALES AND TOLD HIM A WOMAN WAS SITTING ON THE TRAIN TRACKS.

HE FLIPPED ON THE OVERHEAD LIGHTS IN HIS PATROL CAR, WHICH AUTOMATICALLY TURNED ON THE DASH CAMERA.

HE ARRIVED JUST AS THE CROSSING ARMS AT THE INTERSECTION WERE GOING DOWN.

IGNORING THE ONCOMING TRAIN, HE CAN BE SEEN ON CAMERA SPRINGING INTO ACTION; HE GRABS THE WOMAN UNDER THE ARMS AND DRAGS HER OFF THE TRACK, SECONDS BEFORE THE TRAIN COMES RUSHING BY.

OFFICER MORALES HOLDS THE WOMAN WITH ONE HAND AND USES HIS RADIO WITH THE OTHER.

"He got there just in time. Saved this woman's life without regard for his own."

"As the video goes on, she asked him if he's the one that pulled her off the tracks and he said, yes I am. And of course she said, why did you do that?"

He was a little shaken up over the circumstances. I think even more so after he saw the video realizing how close it was. He's a hero. In our eyes, he's a hero and he went way above and beyond the call of duty to save someone else's life." Return to index of stories...
