BACK PAIN EXERCISE-trxVOWIPE

IF YOU WOKE UP WITH SOME TYPE OF BACK PAIN --

THERE COULD BE SOME RELIEF ON THE WAY --

ALL NEW THIS MORNING --

WE'RE LEARNING ABOUT A FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND EXERCISE PROGRAM.

AND YOU CAN DO IT FROM HOME --

IT'S A D-V-D PROGRAM CALLED REHAB ZONE --

A LOUISIANA REHAB PHYSICIAN AND EXERCISE EXPERT TEAMED UP TO CREATE THE IDEA --

AT HOME EXERCISES ARE NOTHING NEW FOR BACK PAIN PATIENTS --

BUT INSTRUCTIONS ARE TYPICALLY HARD TO FOLLOW.

SO THIS D-V-D COMES WITH THREE PHASES OF 12 PROGRESSIVE WORKOUTS THAT ARE EASY TO FOLLOW. AT LEAST 75 PERCENT OF US WILL EXPERIENCE BACK PAIN AT SOME POINT IN OUR LIVES.

IT CAUSES MORE THAN DISCOMFORT. IT CAN LEAD TO DEPRESSION, MISSED WORK AND POOR QUALITY OF LIFE.

IS RELIEVING THE PAIN FOR PATIENTS IN THEIR OWN HOMES.

FOR EIGHT LONG YEARS, MONICA BAILEY ENDURED NAGGING BACK PAIN.IMPACTING HER TO THE POINT THAT SHE COULDN'T STAND FOR MORE THAN AN HOUR WHILE TEACHING HER THIRD GRADE CLASSES.

"Sharp intense pain in my lower back and it would hurt to walk. If I stood for more than an hour or walked around for more than an hour, my back would start to hurt really badly in my lower back."

MONICA DID INJECTIONS AND PHYSICAL THERAPY - BOTH WERE LIKE BANDAIDS TO HER PAIN.

"And that seemed to help, but you're only allowed so many sessions of physical therapy."

THEN MONICA WAS SELECTED AS ONE OF 100 PATIENTS AT CENTER FOR ORTHOPAEDICS TO TAKE PART IN A TRIAL DEVELOPED BY PHYSICAL MEDICINE AND REHAB PHYSICIAN CRAIG MORTON AND EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGIST, CARL COMEAUX, USING THEIR FIRST OF ITS KIND AT-HOME D-V-D EXERCISE PROGRAM TO IMPROVE THEIR BACK PAIN.

"It makes sense that if we strengthen the muscles of the core and the muscles that support the spine, there's more stability to the spine." Return to index of stories...

BACK PAIN EXERCISE-SOTVO

"Each workout has three parts: the warm-up to get the blood flowing, to get the body temperature up, to get the mind right and then the core part or the workout is when they're working on core stability and strength and then the end of the workout is to focus on flexibility."

THESE EXPERTS SAY THEIR PATIENTS ARE ALREADY SEEING IMPROVEMENTS --

LESS PAIN, MORE ENDURANCE.

AT LEAST 75 PERCENT OF US WILL EXPERIENCE BACK PAIN AT SOME POINT IN OUR LIVES.

"What they're telling me is they're more flexible, a lot of them are starting to see a decrease in their pain, they have a lot more endurance, the activities of daily living that they were not able to do, they're now able to do." Return to index of stories...

THERE'S A NEW BOOK OUT THIS SUMMER --

IT'S CALLED -- "SKINNY MEALS" -- WRITTEN BY "THE BIGGEST LOSER'S" PERSONAL TRAINER BOB HARPER.

IN IT -- HE SHARES SOME OF HIS NUTRITION RULES TO HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT.

FIRST UP - DRINK PLENTY OF WATER.

SOMETIMES WHEN WE THINK WE'RE HUNGRY WE'RE REALLY DEHYDRATED.

HE SAYS DRINK A GLASS OF WATER BEFORE EVERY MEAL.

ANOTHER GOOD ROUTINE - EATING BREAKFAST.

SKIPPING MEALS CAN LEAVE YOU FAR TOO HUNGRY -- Return to index of stories...

BOB HARPER DIET-SOTVO

Bob Harper: No resolve whatsoever. Binging will happen, overeating will happen and it'll happen at night. At night when you're supposed to be watching every single thing that you're eating.

HE ALSO SAYS STOCK UP ON VEGGIES --

YOU CAN EAT THOSE ANY TIME OF THE DAY --

ANOTHER TIP -- KEEP THE BAD STUFF OUT OF THE HOUSE.

HE'S A BIG FAN OF VEGETABLES AND SAYS PEOPLE CAN EAT AS MANY AS THEY WANT OF MOST VARIETIES.

Bob Harper: No one is ever going to gain weight from eating broccoli, spinach, kale or ah, cauliflower. Unless they smother it in butter or cheese of course. And I do not want you to.

AND HE SAYS, KEEP THE BAD STUFF OUT OF THE HOUSE.

Bob Harper: Clear out those temptations because you're at home at night and you're exhausted, and if there is this big chocolate bar sitting in your cupboard, you're going to eat it.
