:00 --:04 - Joy Sherman, Downtown Fort Myers Resident

"I'm just in love with this historic city."

HISTORY -- IT'S ONE OF THE REASONS JOY SHERMAN CHOSE TO LIVE IN DOWNTOWN FORT MYERS -- BUT IF THE OWNER OF ONE OF THE CITY'S OLDEST BUILDINGS ON FIRST STREET COULD SOON BECOME A DISTANT MEMORY.

:16 -:22 - Joy Sherman

"I saw the word demolition on the notice. the public notice, and I just freaked out."

ON THURSDAY. THE CITY'S HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION CONSIDERED WHETHER TO ACCEPT AN APPLICATION BY THE BUILDING'S OWNER. TO DEMOLISH THE MORE THAN 100-YEAR-OLD STRUCTURE. AFTER CODE ENFORCEMENT RECENTLY DEEMED IT UNSAFE.

PICTURES FROM INSIDE SHOW EXTENSIVE TERMITE DAMAGE -- SUPPORT BEAMS ROTTED OUT.

:39 -:43 - Amber Evans, Lee Trust for Historic Preservation

"People who take the historic tours, that would be off their stopping point."

MEMBERS OF THE LEE TRUST FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION UNDERSTAND THE SAFETY CONCERNS. BUT ARGUE AT THE VERY LEAST. THE OUTER FACADE OF THE BUILDING SHOULD BE SAVED.

:52 -:59 - Amber Evans

"I think that the potential to keep it would add more so. than what you would lose."

COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE EXPERTS SAY IT CAN OFTEN BE A CHALLENGE TO FIND PERMANENT TENANTS FOR OLDER BUILDINGS -- THIS ONE HAS SAT EMPTY FOR SEVEN YEARS.

1:08 - 1:15 -- Bryan Myers, LandQwest Commercial Real Estate

"There's inventory out there on the marketplace that's ready to go right now. So some of these older buildings, they're inefficient."

FOR NOW PRESERVATION COMMISSIONERS VOTED TO TABLE THE DEMOLITION REQUEST UNTIL AN ENGINEER DETERMINES IF THE BUILDING IS STRUCTURLY SOUND.

1:21 - 1:25 - Joy Sherman

"I want them all to get together and do the right thing, and keep that building."

A PIECE OF HISTORY THAT -- AT LEAST FOR NOW -- WILL LIVE TO SEE ANOTHER DAY.
