THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

ANOTHER HOT ONE ON-TAP

It was incredibly hot Wednesday. Area wide, many hit the mid 90s and it felt even hotter with that humidity. No surprise here, we're going for the same thing all over again Thursday afternoon. Many will once again top out in the mid 90s.

Storm chances increase during the afternoon as well. Northerly flow will help keep showers and storms to the south, much like Wednesday. However, can't rule out entirely one or two stray showers backing their way along any coastal area.

Overnight, mild and muggy conditions stay in place. Mid 70s will be common in most places with upper 70s along the coastal areas. Return to index of stories...

MOST AMERICANS DON'T HAVE A RAINY DAY FUND.

AND PEOPLE 30 AND 49 YEARS OLD, MANY, DON'T HAVE ANY SAVINGS AT ALL!

SHARON EPPERSON LOOKS INTO WHY AMERICANS AREN'T SAVING. Return to index of stories...

EMERGENCY SAVINGS-PKG

WHEN IT COMES TO SAVING FOR A RAINY DAY. MOST AMERICANS KNOW WHAT THEY SHOULD DO.

"Try to save more, try to manage my money a little bit better"

"You can't live check by check because you never know"

"Every time you get paid you put something aside"

BUT THERE AREN'T TOO MANY PEOPLE ACTUALLY DOING IT.

REPORTER: "Do you have money set aside for emergencies"

MOS: "Yeah. no"

MORE THAN A QUARTER OF AMERICANS HAS NO EMERGENCY SAVINGS.

EVEN AS THE STOCK MARKET REACHES NEW HEIGHTS AND PARTS OF THE ECONOMY ARE SLOWLY STARTING TO IMPROVE, AMERICANS HAVE MADE VERY LITTLE PROGRESS IN THEIR SAVINGS, ACCORDING TO A NEW SURVEY BY BANKRATE-DOT-COM.

HALF OF AMERICANS HAVE LESS THAN THREE MONTHS WORTH OF EXPENSES SAVED, THE SURVEY FOUND.

FEWER THAN ONE OUT OF FOUR HAVE SAVED SIX MONTHS OR MORE OF EXPENSES - THE IDEAL AMOUNT RECOMMENDED BY MOST FINANCIAL EXPERTS.

"This lack of emergency savings and lack of sufficient emergency savings is pervasive in america. Even the top highest income households, the top third of income earning households, fewer than half of them have an adequate emergency savings cushion."

"Another recent study by the corporation for enterprise development found a quarter of middle class households -- those earning between 56-thousand and 91-thousand dollars a year -- are considered "liquid asset poor" - meaning they have less than three months worth of savings. to even live at the poverty level. That's less than six-thousand dollars for a family of four."

"People are stunned when they see it's not just an issue of those who are traditionally seen as poor. 89 percent of the people in liquid asset poverty are employed, which refutes the stereotype of people who are living on the financial edge."

MANY WORKING AMERICANS SAY THEY JUST DON'T HAVE THAT EXTRA MONEY TO SOCK AWAY. THEIR PAYCHECKS HAVE STAYED ABOUT THE SAME EVEN AS THERE HAVE BEEN MODEST INCREASES IN EXPENSES FOR FOOD AND TRANSPORTATION. THAT LEAVES LITTLE WIGGLE ROOM IN THE BUDGET.

.AND NOT HAVING A BUDGET -- A PLAN THAT INCLUDES HOW MUCH TO SAVE -- IS THE ANOTHER OBSTACLE THAT PREVENTS HOUSEHOLDS FROM STASHING MONEY AWAY.

"The biggest barrier to saving is not being in the habit of saving. Too many people try to do their saving this way: They wait until the end of the month, and try to save what's left over. Guess what? Most of the time nothing's left over. So saving doesn't happen."

FINANCIAL EXPERTS AGREE A SIMPLE STEP CAN REVERSE THAN TREND - AND GET FOLKS IN THE HABIT OF SAVING - JUST REMEMBER TO PAY YOURSELF FIRST. Return to index of stories...

TEEN CAR GIVEAWAY-PKG

A SET OF WHEELS.

.PUTS THESE HIGH SCHOOL GRADS ON THE ROAD TO NEW OPPORTUNITIES.

THEY'VE BEEN FRIENDS SINCE THEY WERE TWO.

"Yeah, 16 years."

BUT THEY'VE TAKEN VERY DIFFERENT TWISTS AND TURNS.

KENNEDEE'S OFTEN BUMPY. JESSICA'S MOSTLY SMOOTH.

SO WHEN THE TEENS WERE IN THEIR SENIOR YEAR AT WOODS CROSS HIGH AND ASKED BY THEIR ENGLISH TEACHER TO ENTER AN ESSAY FOR EXTRA CREDIT.

"And it has to answer the question what you would do with a car."

KENNEDEE TURNED IT DOWN. AND JESSICA GOT TO WORK.

THE WINNER WOULD GET A CAR FROM BOUNTIFUL MAZDA.

"But this wouldn't be the essay Jessica would enter."

"This isn't right. I can't say that I need this car, because I don't, and I just twirled around in my chair and thought, 'Ya know, Kennedee needs this car.' So I erased what I had written and wrote a whole 'nother one."

"I Would Love to Win… But Not For Me. I would love to win the car, but if I did, I would give it to my friend, Kennedee Black. She works more than 30 hours and sometimes more than 40 to help her mother support her brothers at home."

AND WHEN JESSICA'S ESSAY WON.

"I didn't have words to say. I didn't know what to say."

.BUT SHE NOW HAD A CAR.

"I bawled for like 2 days straight."

THE ONLY PROBLEM.

"The stickshift."

AND KENNEDEE DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO DRIVE A MANUAL.

JESSICA COULD HELP, BUT THERE WERE SOME BIG ROADBLOCKS.

".because I didn't take the brake off."

.AND DETOURS.

"I'm trying to figure out the whole clutch."

"The ratio deal."

"I'm trying to figure it out."

BUT ONCE THE TWO WERE OFF.

"I'm getting so good."

.THE LONGTIME FRIENDS WERE READY TO CRUISE. Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

CANCER BARBIE DOLLS-PKG

nats - You broke her?

IT WASN'T LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT FOR GRACE BUMSTEAD, 4, AND ELLA, A CHEMOTHERAPY BARBIE WHO'S BALD AND WEARS WIGS.

"When they first met, she's like, 'OK, I get what's going on.' But it gave us the chance to say, 'Here's a beautiful, smiling doll. It doesn't have hair.'"

GRACE HAS A RARE FORM OF LEUKEMIA. THE RATE AMONG CHILDREN IS ROUGHLY 1 IN A MILLION.

SHE WILL ENDURE HIGH DOSES OF CHEMOTHERAPY OVER THE NEXT YEAR AND A HALF.

"She's been amazingly brave. And we're very, very proud of her. It's not where we expected to be in life right now."

AND ONE OF THE HARDEST ADJUSTMENTS HAS BEEN LOSING GRACE'S BLONDE CURLS, BUT THAT'S WHERE ELLA CAME IN.

"We bring her along everywhere to say, this is what's happening. This is what's happened to Ella. This is what's gonna happen to you. It brought it to her level."

NOW ELLA IS PART OF WHAT THE FAMILY CALLS GRACE'S "INNER CIRCLE OF BARBIES," ALONGSIDE ARIEL AND RAPUNZEL.

Do you think Ella's pretty?

Yep.

Even without hair?

Yeah!

BUT SADLY NOT EVERY CANCER PATIENT IS ABLE TO ADOPT AN ELLA DOLL.

WHEN CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL LOS ANGELES TOLD GRACE'S MOM THEY ONLY HAD SIX DOLLS TO HAND OUT, SHE SPRUNG INTO ACTION, CREATING A PETITION TO ASK MATTEL TO MAKE MORE.

IN JUST THREE MONTHS, THAT PETITION HAD MORE THAN 100,000 SUPPORTERS.

"Every 10 minutes, we got 1,000 signatures."

MATTEL TOOK NOTICE, CONTACTING GRACE'S MOM AND AGREEING TO MAKE MORE ELLA DOLLS AND TO DISTRIBUTE TO CHILDREN'S HOSPITALS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY.

"If the pain that we're going through right now can help someone else, it makes it feel like it's worth it."

GRACE'S ONCOLOGIST SAID SHE HAS A 75 PERCENT CHANCE OF BEING CURED.

"But the big issue is psychosocial. How will she view herself? How will she view the world when she grows up? Will she be afraid of the whole world because she thinks that leukemia will come back at any minute and end her life?"

GRACE'S FAMILY BELIEVES ELLA WILL HELP REMIND THE YOUNG GIRL OF THE STRUGGLE SHE OVERCAME AND HOPEFULLY WILL NEVER REVISIT.

"We really believe that God is going to use this to do good things in her life and to make her the kind of person that she's going to fight for good things all of her life." Return to index of stories...
