GETTING TO RETIREMENT HAS ALWAYS BEEN A CHALLENGE, BUT GETTING THROUGH RETIREMENT IS THE REAL GOAL.

TO OFTEN, WHEN COUPLES FINALLY BEGIN THEIR RETIREMENT JOURNEY, THERE ARE DISAGREEMENTS ON HOW TO SPEND THEIR MONEY IN RETIREMENT.

JIM NOLTE WITH WELLS FARGO ADVISORS IS HERE HERE TO TALK ABOUT HOW COUPLES CAN AGREE ON RETIREMENT FINANCES. Return to index of stories...

WELLS FARGO-PLASMA CG

· I have to say that during client interviews about retirement planning this is a pretty common discussion. Most couples that have been married for a while have already achieved a balanced approach to their financial plans.

· For some couples, disagreements about investing are a long-standing problem in their relationship. When this is the case, moving into retirement adds additional stress because money issues become more of a focus along with the normal anxiety of no longer receiving a paycheck.

· According to the American Psychological Association, 71% of U. S. Adults report that money is a significant source of stress.

· It does seem that one partner tends to be more aggressive with their investments than the other.

· I think a common misconception is that the wife is the more conservative member of the team.

· Another misconception is that people become more conservative with their investment ideas as they get older.

· Because of the extended bull market, currently over five years and still going, investors are more willing to take risk in their retirement years.

· For the record, I worry about that. When emotions, "greed and fear" overly influence your investment decisions, it's always a problem.

· I've always felt that the first step in a successful financial plan is to establish the "risk profile" of the clients.

· When the individual risk profiles are substantially different we have to establish what I call a "common comfort zone".

· Achieving that "common comfort zone" begins with establishing a retirement budget. A basic financial goal is to pay our bills but I'm always surprised at how few people really know how much they spend each year to maintain their lifestyle.

· Your entire retirement financial plan is based on that one line item - "how much income do I need per year in retirement?".

· Another big area of disagreement: how much money will be given to their financially strapped adult children. This has become a very common problem in this less than perfect economic recovery.

· It's natural for a parent to want to help their children if that financial help destroys the financial security of the parents, it becomes a losing proposition for all involved.

· In many cases the solution is to agree on an annual amount that will be given to the child. Anything over that amount becomes a loan with interest. If the child does not pay back that loan before the parents pass away, then the child's inheritance would be reduced by the amount of the loan.

· Investment decisions in retirement have to focus on the financial goals and the amount of risk that an individual is comfortable with.

· It's also very important to prioritize your financial goals. Separating goals and dreams is a great way to be realistic about this issue.

· Retirement planning has always been a difficult and challenging task. The 24/7 news cycle doesn't make this easier. We all need to focus on separating the noise from the real news.

· The retirement planning process begins with determining how much retirement income you really need - that is usually different from what you really want.

· The next really important step is determining that "common comfort zone" for your investment decisions.

· I will say one thing, a written financial plan really helps. Talk to your financial advisor. Return to index of stories...

SPINE SURGERY IS SOMETHING MOST PEOPLE WITH BACK PAIN WOULD LIKE TO AVOID.

THE CHALLENGE IS DETERMINING WHO COULD BENEFIT FROM SURGERY.

AMY OSHIER REPORTS IN TODAYS HEALTH MATTERS. Return to index of stories...

HEALTH MATTERS-PKG

THE STARTING POINT FOR FIXING BACK PAIN IS TO PIN-POINT ITS ORIGIN.

DR. DONNA LANTHIER/PHYSIATRIST

RUNS:

1:42 Is it purely muscular, that physical therapy can help? Is it a disc problem? Is it a nerve problem?

DR. DONNA LANTHIER IS THE POINT PERSON AT LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM'S COMPREHENSIVE SPINE CENTER. BACK PAIN CAN BE ARTHRITIC, TRAUMATIC, OR NEUROLOGIC.

DR. DONNA LANTHIER/PHYSIATRIST

RUNS:

2:14 Certain nerves refer all the way down the leg, even though the problem is actually starting where the nerve exits from the back.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

The Spine Center groups specialists under one roof to diagnose and address back problems. While it is the nerve center in treating pain, it is also a referral source for surgery. Which should be a last resort.

DR. DEAN LIN/NEUROSURGEON

RUNS:

:24 The way that most referrals go, is if anyone has any back pain or neck pain issues they come to a neurosurgeon to get the opinion. The problem is, only a small fraction of the patients will actually benefit from surgery.

IT OFTEN RESULTS IN A DELAY OF CARE. STARTING AT A SPINE CENTER, PUTS PATIENTS IN A POSITION TO FIND RELIEF.

DR. DONNA LANTHIER/PHYSIATRIST

RUNS:

3:20 X-rays are available in this building. MRIs are available here, physical therapy and then if needed they can get injections as well. 6:28 We'll refer to neurosurgeons if the treatment here doesn't take care of the problem.

COMPRESSED OR PINCHED NERVES MAY LEAD TO Spine surgery. ALONG WITH CASES INVOLVING uncontrollable pain, trouble walking, AND difficulty with fine motor control. TAKING A SYSTEMATIC APPROACH IS PROVING TO BE A BETTER METHOD OF BEATING BACK PAIN.

DR. DEAN LIN/NEUROSURGEON

RUNS:

7:32 If that patient can be taken care of more quickly and gotten out of pain more quickly then that would be the ideal situation. If they need an operation then that's what we're here for.

CLINTON DAMAGE CONTROL-PKG

HILLARY CLINTON FINALLY NAILING THE QUESTION ABOUT HER WEALTH - IN AN INTERVIEW WITH P-B-S'S GWEN IFILL.

"I shouldn't have said the five or so words that I said, but my unartful use of those few words doesn't change who I am, what I've stood for my entire life, what I stand for today."

IT TOOK ALMOST THREE WEEKS. FOR HER TO CLEAN UP THE MESS FROM THIS COMMENT TO ABC'S DIANE SAWYER DURING THE DEBUT INTERVIEW FOR HER NEW BOOK.

"We came out of the White House not only dead broke but in debt. We had no money when we got there and we struggled to piece together the resources for mortgages for houses, for Chelsea's education."

CLINTON MADE ANOTHER GAFFE THIS WEEKEND - THIS TIME IN AN INTERVIEW WITH BRITAIN'S GUARDIAN NEWSPAPER.

SHE SAID PEOPLE. QUOTE -

"DON'T SEE ME AS PART OF THE PROBLEM BECAUSE WE PAY ORDINARY INCOME TAX, UNLIKE A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO ARE TRULY WELL OFF, NOT TO NAME NAMES; AND WE'VE DONE IT THROUGH DINT OF HARD WORK."

SHE WENT ON TO TALK ABOUT HER "RECORD" AND CREATING "A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD" ACCORDING TO A TRANSCRIPT OF THE FULL INTERVIEW, OBTAINED AND VERIFIED BY C-N-N.

"But the damage was done. "

TUESDAY, HER HUSBAND CAME TO HER DEFENSE.

"It is factually true that we were several million dollars in debt."

"She's not out of touch. And she advocated and worked as a senator for things that were good for ordinary people. And before that, all her life."

BUT CLINTON DIDN'T LET THE FORMER PRESIDENT SPEAK FOR HER.

"My husband was very sweet today, but I don't need anybody to defend my record, I think my record speaks for itself."

AND ON THE TOPIC OF A PRESIDENTIAL RUN IN 2016 -- SHE MADE CLEAR: IT'S NOT AN EASY DECISION.

"It's a very hard job, and it's a job that, you know, you have to be totally consumed by, and that's kind of the definition of being a little bit crazy, I think."
