FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

!!!!NEED WX ANCHOR CG!!!!!

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

TRACKING HEAT AND STORM POTENTIAL

Another hot and humid day is on tap for Monday, with scattered showers and storms possible by evening.

A mix of sun and clouds should adorn the sky through the mid afternoon time frame, and around mid-day we'll see temperatures again back in the low 90s. Official forecast highs are expected at 94 at Fort Myers and 90 at Naples.

We set a record yesterday with a high of 97 degrees. Today's record is 99 degrees, set back in 1942. We aren't going to set a record today, but it will still be hot and humid.

A few showers and storms will start by mid-afternoon. Then, there will be plenty of scattered late afternoon and evening storms across the area. Activity will likely start deeper inland and come back toward the coastline toward the evening time frame.

Highs will stay in the low to mid 90s and lows in the mid 70s through the week. Afternoon storms will stick around, too.

TROPICAL UPDATE

We will be closely monitoring a low pressure center off the coast of Jacksonville, Florida for continued signs of tropical organization. The National Hurricane Center is granting the feature a 60 percent chance of tropical formation in the next two days, with an 80% chance in the next five.

Though the disturbance is moving southward now, the more long term outlook has the feature organizing and then hooking toward the north into the work week. This is not a threat to Southwest Florida.

Otherwise, the remainder of the Atlantic, Gulf and Caribbean look fairly quiet at this time. Return to index of stories...

WEATHER-WX WALL

!!!NEED WX ANCHOR CG!!!

MOTHER OF FIVE DIS-LAND-EES ACOSTA KEEPS ORDER IN HER HOUSE BY LAYING DOWN THE LAW. INCLUDING ONES THAT GOVERN BED TIME.

DISLANDYS ACOSTA/MOM

RUNS:

1:14 By 8:30 it's time to wind down and get ready for bed. And this is already bath taken, stories read and everything is already done. Then by 9:00 it's light out.

DEVELOPING PROPER SLEEP HABITS DOES MORE THAN CREATE A HAPPY HOME- DOCTORS NOW BELIEVE TOO LITTLE SLEEP AFFECTS KIDS HEALTH AND WEIGHT.

DR. NANCY WITHAM/PEDIATRICIAN

RUNS:

:15 It's so interesting about sleep and weight. There's certainly been a statistical correlation. That overweight children are more likely to have less than what would be the optimal sleep time for their age.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

Most at risk are little kids- between 1 and 3 years old, they should get between 12 and 14 hours of shut eye. Studies find that those who frequently deprived are more likely to be obese- by the age of 7.

DR. NANCY WITHAM/PEDIATRICIAN

RUNS:

:59 So as the parent, if you think you're putting your child to bed for what should be a reasonable amount of time but that child is sleepier than what you would expect, that's really something you should talk to your doctor about.

IN SCHOOL AGED CHILDREN SLEEP APNEA, OFTEN LINKED TO OBESITY, CAN BE A FACTOR. MAKING IT DIFFICULT FOR KIDS TO REST. TV AND OTHER DISTRACTIONS ARE FREQUENTLY TO BLAME. THE LACK OF Zs ALSO IMPACTS DAYTIME BEHAVIOR.

DR. NANCY WITHAM/PEDIATRICIAN

RUNS:

1:25 There's been a correlation between behavior and poor night's sleep. We certainly do know that, that a long night's sleep does help cognitive function and behavior.

DISLANDYS SEES WHAT ONE SLIP IN SLUMBER DOES TO HER KIDS.

DISLANDYS ACOSTA/MOM

RUNS:

1:57 They just like drag around the house.

KEEPING KIDS ON SCHEDULE IS THE SUREST WAY TO REGULATE SLEEP OR SPOT A SLEEP DISORDER. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...
