FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

PM DOWNPOURS EXPECTED THROUGH THE WEEK

Showers and storms have come to an end in Southwest Florida, and now our Monday morning starts with partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the mid to upper 70s. We'll get to see some sunshine as clouds continue to thin out early this morning. By midday, though, the clouds will already be starting to build back into the area. Temperatures will warm into the lower to middle 90s this afternoon. We set a record yesterday with a high of 97 degrees. Today's record is 99 degrees, set back in 1942. We aren't going to set a record today, but with an official high of 94 degrees expected this afternoon, it will still be hot and humid. A few showers and storms will start by mid-afternoon. Then, there will be plenty of scattered late afternoon and evening storms across the area. Activity will likely start deeper inland and come back toward the coastline toward the evening time frame. Highs will stay in the low to mid 90s and lows in the mid 70s through the week. Afternoon storms will stick around, too.

TROPICAL UPDATE

We will be closely monitoring a low pressure center off the coast of Jacksonville, Florida for continued signs of tropical organization. The National Hurricane Center is granting the feature a 60% chance of tropical formation in the next two days, with an 80% chance in the next five.

Though the disturbance is moving southward now, the more long term outlook has the feature organizing and then hooking toward the north into the work week. This is not a threat to Southwest Florida.

Otherwise, the remainder of the Atlantic, Gulf and Caribbean look fairly quiet at this time. Return to index of stories...

SUMMER IS A BUSY TIME IN THE REAL ESTATE BUSINESS.

BUT IS IT A GOOD TIME TO BUY OR A GOOD TIME TO SELL?

BOB HANSEN EXPLAINS. Return to index of stories...

SUMMER REAL ESTATE-PKG

SUMMER BRINGS OUT THE SUNSHINE AND THE REAL ESTATE SIGNS.

BUT WHAT SORT OF SUMMER WILL IT BE FOR HOME SELLERS?

"You can't say it's a sellers market, you can't really say it's a buyers market. it's kind of in between."

ANGELA HAMANN LOOKS OVER A CONDO SHE'S LISTED FOR SALE.

"well it's a two bedroom and two bath, the master bedroom is back there."

THE CONDO MARKET HERE HAS DROPPED A BIT HERE, BUT ANGELA SAYS THERE IS STILL A STRONG DEMAND FOR CERTAIN PROPERTIES.

"typically three bedrooms, they're looking for a garage, and they're looking for safe neighborhoods."

"markets that people had written off have come back like gang busters."

LISLIE KILPATRICK PREDICTS A VERY STRONG SUMMER. THE PRESIDENT OF THE GREATER SAN DIEGO ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS SAYS THE HOME FLIPPERS ARE GONE BUT INVESTORS ARE STILL BUYING. AND THEN THERE'S ALSO THE APPEAL OF FINANCING.

"they're still historically low."

"but getting one of those homes can be frustrating, especially if you're a first time buyer on a budget."

"the first time buyer has challenges right now, so they have to be extremely patient, they have to do their homework, they have to be completely, 100 percent pre-qualified, pre-approved, ready to go, because they do have competition."

FIRST TIME BUYERS ARE GENERALLY LOOKING AT PRICES BETWEEN 300 AND 500 THOUSAND DOLLARS. BUT NOT EVERYONE IS WILLING TO PUT THEIR HOMES ON THE MARKET. STILL, SUNNY WEATHER BRINGS OUT BUYERS. AND JUNE AND JULY ARE USUALLY THE BUSIEST MONTHS OF THE YEAR. Return to index of stories...

POST-SURGICAL PAIN IS OFTENTIMES THE WORST PART OF A PROCEDURE FOR PATIENTS.

IT CAN LEAD THEM TO TAKING STRONG, POTENTIALLY ADDICTIVE PAINKILLERS FOR RELIEF.

NOW, THERE'S A SINGLE-DOSE INJECTION *DURING* SURGERY--

THAT CAN TAKE THE PAIN AWAY IN THE MOST CRITICAL RECOVERY DAYS.

BRITNEY GLASER REPORTS. Return to index of stories...

PAIN INJECTIONS-PKG

MARILYN MARTINE HAS BEEN A SCHOOL BUS DRIVER FOR 30 YEARS. SO WHEN THE ARTHRITIS IN HER KNEES BECAME UNBEARABLE, SHE KNEW SHE HAD TO DO SOMETHING FOR HERSELF - AND HER JOB.

"I hurt so bad that they could cut the knee off completely and it wouldn't have bothered me any if it would've felt better"

ORTHOPAEDIC SURGEON NATHAN COHEN GOT A CAT SCAN OF MARILYN'S LEG. THEN A CUSTOM BLOCK WAS MADE FOR EACH KNEE TO REPLACE THE WORN-OUT PARTS WITH SOMETHING STRONG AND NEW.

"pin it in place with the two pins on top and two pins in the bottom and the slot here allows us to simply remove the arthritis off the fmur bone in a very accurate fashion."

IT TYPICALLY TAKES SEVERAL WEEKS - EVEN MONTHS - TO BOUNCE BACK AFTER A KNEE REPLACEMENT.

BUT A SINGLE DOSE PAIN MEDICATION CALLED "EXPAREL" REDUCES THAT TIME BY CONTROLLING PAIN IMMEDIATELY POST-OP.

"allows the medication actually to be absorbed into the tissues around the knee and gradually allows the pain to come on after 3 or 4 days as opposed to right after the operation."

"the medication is called bupivacaine and studies on the drug show that the pain relief can last as long as 96 hours."

"The key is basically to get the pain under control to allow quick rehab and home. They're not sick people when they come in with a bad knee or bad hip, they need to get out of the hospital as quickly as possible and get back into their own environment."

IT'S ONLY BEEN TEN DAYS SINCE MARILYN HAD HER SECOND TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT.

SHE SAID THERE'S SOME STIFFNESS, BUT NO PAIN.

"For pain, zero. It's a zero. Before it was at least a ten. It was really bad before."

THAT PAIN RELIEF IS SOMETHING MARILYN HASN'T FELT FOR NEARLY FOUR YEARS - AND IT'S BRINGING FREEDOM SHE'S ONCE AGAIN READY TO ENJOY.

"I can take off and do the things I did before, just with a little determination.". Return to index of stories...

JULY 4TH GAS PRICES-ON CAM

IT'S A BIT FRUSTRATING. BUT THE COST OF CELEBRATING OUR INDEPENDENCE THIS COMING WEEKEND IS GOING TO BE HIGHER. MAINLY BECAUSE OF OUR DEPENDENCE ON GAS.

DETAILS FROM NBC'S CHRIS CLACKUM. Return to index of stories...

JULY 4TH GAS PRICES-PKG

THE RECORD NUMBER OF PEOPLE TRIPLE-A'S EXPECTING TO HIT THE ROAD THIS WEEKEND FOR JULY 4TH.

. WILL BE MET WITH A NEAR-RECORD PRICE FOR A GALLON OF GAS.

"It is extremely high for this early part of summer. In fact, most drivers are paying the highest gas prices for early summer in six years"

AVERAGING 3-68 A GALLON. 20-CENTS HIGHER THAN A YEAR AGO.ANALYSTS HAD PREDICTED IT WOULD BE LOWER.BUT THEN CAME THE UNREST IN IRAQ.

"This is unexpected, iraq is a major oil producer, it's the second largest oil producer in opec and that fear in the marketplace that rebels could take over is what's driving up the cost of gasoline prices here at home"

BUT GAS ISN'T THE ONLY TRAVEL EXPENSE THAT'LL BE HIGHER THIS YEAR OVER LAST.

"Airfares and hotels on average, up five percent compared to the holiday weekend last year, so people are going to be paying a little more than they did last year"

HOWEVER, HIGHER PRICES AREN'T DETERRING PEOPLE LOOKING TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF A HOLIDAY THAT FALLS ON A FRIDAY AND WILL EXTEND THROUGH EARLY NEXT WEEK.

"We can guarantee that millions of americans will be driving for the busy july fourth weekend especially because it's on a long weekend so really expect the roads to be busy, crowded, and full of high gas prices"

BUT STILL 50-CENTS A GALLON CHEAPER THAN GAS IN THE SUMMER OF 2008.

AMAZON RISING-ON CAM

A VIEW FROM INSIDE WHAT SOME CLAIM--

ARE TOUGH WORKING CONDITIONS AT THE WORLD'S BIGGEST ONLINE RETAILER, AMAZON.COM.

IT'S PART OF AN HOUR-LONG DOCUMENTARY ON THE COMPANY.

DAVID FABER SPOKE WITH FORMER EMPLOYEES ABOUT THE CHALLENGES OF GETTING ALL THOSE ORDERS OUT THE DOOR. Return to index of stories...

AMAZON RISING-PKG

ACROSS A SPACE AS VAST AS 20 FOOTBALL FIELDS, WORKERS MANAGE THE WIDEST VARIETY OF INVENTORY ON THE PLANET AND MOVE TENS OF MILLIONS OF PRODUCTS AT LIGHTNING SPEED.

DANA WETHINGTON: "WHEN I FIRST STARTED WORKIN' AT AMAZON I HAD A SIX MONTH OLD, I GUESS. IT GIVE ME INSURANCE FOR HIM. PUT FOOD ON THE TABLE FOR HIM. AMAZON IS A GOOD JOB."

BUT DANA WETHINGTON AND OTHER FORMER EMPLOYEES DESCRIBE A CORPORATE TASK-MASTER THAT DEMANDED WORKERS MEET STRICT PRODUCTIVITY GOALS NO MATTER WHAT.

IN PENNSYLVANIA, WORKERS COLLAPSED FROM HEAT EXHAUSTION, AND IN KENTUCKY JUST LAST YEAR.

DANA WETHINGTON: "YOU HEARD THE AMBULANCE CALLED ALL THE TIME. PEOPLE WERE PASSIN' OUT. FROM FROM THE HEAT AND, YOU KNOW, HAVIN' TROUBLE BREATHIN'."

AFTER THOSE INCIDENTS CAME TO LIGHT, AMAZON TOOK STEPS TO ASSURE ITS FULFILLMENT CENTERS HAVE AIR CONDITIONING.

KAY JOHNSON, A TOP PERFORMER WHO OFTEN PACKED MORE THAN 1800 ITEMS A DAY, LEFT THE COMPANY AFTER SEVEN YEARS AND WON A WORKER'S COMPENSATION CLAIM AGAINST IT.

KAY JOHNSON: "MY KNEES, MY BACK, MY HANDS, THEY'RE-- THEY'RE NEVER GONNA BE THE SAME ANYMORE. ALL BECAUSE OF AMAZON."

.

BUT OTHERS HAD A GOOD EXPERIENCE.

DOC: "I LOVED THE JOB."

DOC CANE WAS A MANAGER IN PENNSYLVANIA. HE SAYS THE DEMANDS ON WORKERS ARE ALL IN SERVICE TO THE CUSTOMER.

DOC KANE: "IF THINGS ARE SLOW IN PICK IT SLOWS DOWN PACK, WHICH SLOWS DOWN EVERYTHING GOING OUT THE DOOR."

WAREHOUSE WORK ANYWHERE CAN BE GRUELING. BUT PROTESTS, LAW SUITS AND INVESTIGATIVE REPORTS IN THE U.S. AND ABROAD RAISE QUESTIONS ABOUT HOW HARD AMAZON PUSHES ITS EMPLOYEES.

DANA WETHINGTON: "I QUIT BUYIN' ITEMS FROM AMAZON, AND TO THIS DAY HAVE YET TO BUY ANYTHING BECAUSE I KNOW HOW HARD AND STRENUOUS IT IS ON YOUR BODY TO ACTUALLY BE ABLE TO GET A PACKAGE TO YOU."

STAND UP: "WE ASKED AMAZON ABOUT THE CONDITIONS IN ITS FULFILLMENT CENTERS. COMPANY OFFICIALS WOULDN'T SPEAK TO US ON CAMERA, BUT IN A STATEMENT, POINTED TO AMAZON'S STRONG SAFETY RECORD COMPARED TO OTHERS IN ITS INDUSTRY. THEY DID NOT, HOWEVER, ADDRESS CLAIMS OF UNREALISTIC PERFORMANCE DEMANDS."

BRAD STONE: "THEY ARE DOING WORK THAT ROBOTS CAN'T DO. IF THEY COULD, AMAZON WOULD PROBABLY EAGERLY REPLACE THEIR-- PHYSICAL LABOR IN THEIR FULFILLMENT CENTERS WITH-- WITH ROBOTS."

AMAZON HAS COMPLETELY RE-DEFINED "CONVENIENCE", BUT AT WHAT PRICE? Return to index of stories...
