FORECAST OPEN Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

TRACKING HEAT AND STORM POTENTIAL

Another hot and humid day is on tap for Monday, with scattered showers and storms possible by evening.

A mix of sun and clouds should adorn the sky through the mid afternoon time frame, and around mid-day we'll see temperatures again back in the low 90s. Official forecast highs are expected at 94 at Fort Myers and 90 at Naples.

We set a record yesterday with a high of 97 degrees. Today's record is 99 degrees, set back in 1942. We aren't going to set a record today, but it will still be hot and humid.

A few showers and storms will start by mid-afternoon. Then, there will be plenty of scattered late afternoon and evening storms across the area. Activity will likely start deeper inland and come back toward the coastline toward the evening time frame.

Highs will stay in the low to mid 90s and lows in the mid 70s through the week. Afternoon storms will stick around, too.

TROPICAL UPDATE

We will be closely monitoring a low pressure center off the coast of Jacksonville, Florida for continued signs of tropical organization. The National Hurricane Center is granting the feature a 60 percent chance of tropical formation in the next two days, with an 80% chance in the next five.

Though the disturbance is moving southward now, the more long term outlook has the feature organizing and then hooking toward the north into the work week. This is not a threat to Southwest Florida.

Otherwise, the remainder of the Atlantic, Gulf and Caribbean look fairly quiet at this time. Return to index of stories...

With the Veterans Affairs department crippled by what a tough new White House report called a "corrosive culture".

.today, President Obama will nominate Bob McDonald, the recently retired CEO at Procter & Gamble TO RUN THE AGENCY.

McDonald -- whose portfolio at P&G included unmistakable household brands like Crest and Tide -- would take over THE DEPARTMENT servING more than EIGHT million veterans a year.

White House aides point to McDonald's stellar managerial record and customer service experience.

It's an unorthodox pick to replace Eric Shinseki, a four-star general, who resigned last month amid allegations at the V-A of mismanagement and cover-ups of long patient wait times.

McDonald, a West Point grad, has a strong military background himself.

House Speaker John Boehner was complimentary of McDonald.

. but insisted the onus remains on President Obama to articulate "a vision for sweeping reform."

Among McDonald's first challenges, if confirmed: accomodating the surge of young veterans returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Return to index of stories...

"Hi there, this is it.the final phase of the trial. And already in court today. major headline. We now have the results of Oscar Pistorius' psychological evaluation. The panel of doctors all agree. He does not have any mental illness when he shot and killed girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.nothing at all that would have affected him during the shooting. These findings could be a big blow to the defense."

THIS IS OUR FIRST LOOK AT OSCAR PISTORIUS IN MORE THAN A MONTH.

HE'S BEEN AWAY AT A MENTAL HOSPITAL.WHERE A TEAM OF PSYCHIATRISTS EVALUATED HIM EVERYDAY FOR A MONTH. IN COURT TODAY.THE PROSECUTOR READ THE RESULTS.

SOT PROSECUTOR:

"MR. PISTORIUS DID NOT SUFFER FROM A MENTAL DEFECT OR MENTAL ILLNESS AT THE TIME OF THE COMMISSION OF THE OFFENSE THAT WOULD HAVE RENDERED HIM CRIMINALLY NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE OFFENSE AS CHARGED.

THE PISTORIUS DEFENSE TEAM HAD CLAIMED HE HAS "GENERAL ANXIETY DISORDER'.EXPLAINING WHY HE SHOT AND KILLED HIS MODEL GIRLFRIEND, REEVA STEENKAMP.THINKING SHE WAS AN INTRUDER. PISTORIUS SAT IN COURT TODAY, YAWNING AT TIMES.LOOKING UPSET AT TIMES.HEARING THE RESULTS THAT HE KNEW RIGHT FROM WRONG.

SOT PROSECUTOR:

MR. PISTORIUS IS CAPABLE OF APPRECIATING WRONGFULNESS OF HIS ACT."

JEFF: What does this result mean that he didn't have a mental illness at the time?

ULRICH: Well it basically means that the criminal trial is back on track now Jeff and that if Oscar is convicted at the end of the trial he could face a jail sentence.

JEFF: Instead of going into a mental hospital?

ULRICH: Exactly, instead of being institutionalized.

DEVELOPING PROPER SLEEP HABITS DOES MORE THAN CREATE A HAPPY HOME- DOCTORS NOW BELIEVE TOO LITTLE SLEEP AFFECTS KIDS HEALTH AND WEIGHT.

DR. NANCY WITHAM/PEDIATRICIAN

RUNS:

:15 It's so interesting about sleep and weight. There's certainly been a statistical correlation. That overweight children are more likely to have less than what would be the optimal sleep time for their age.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

Most at risk are little kids- between 1 and 3 years old, they should get between 12 and 14 hours of shut eye. Studies find that those who frequently deprived are more likely to be obese- by the age of 7.

DR. NANCY WITHAM/PEDIATRICIAN

RUNS:

:59 So as the parent, if you think you're putting your child to bed for what should be a reasonable amount of time but that child is sleepier than what you would expect, that's really something you should talk to your doctor about.

IN SCHOOL AGED CHILDREN SLEEP APNEA, OFTEN LINKED TO OBESITY, CAN BE A FACTOR. MAKING IT DIFFICULT FOR KIDS TO REST. TV AND OTHER DISTRACTIONS ARE FREQUENTLY TO BLAME. THE LACK OF Zs ALSO IMPACTS DAYTIME BEHAVIOR.

"All of a sudden you saw their faces go like this and you heard a big bang and a hiss…"

SHOCK ABOARD A UNITED AIRLINES FLIGHT, WHEN AN EMERGENCY SLIDE ACCIDENTALLY DEPLOYED MIDAIR -- INFLATING INSIDE THE BACK OF THE BOEING 737 CARRYING MORE THAN 100 PEOPLE.

PASSENGERS REPORT HEARING A "DISTINCT POPPING" NOISE BEFORE THE SLIDE STARTED FILLING UP INSIDE THE CABIN.

FLIGHT ATTENDANTS RUSHED TO ASSESS THE SITUATION.

"They just had a panicked look and they quickly took the carts and ran backwards to the front of the plane."

NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED, BUT THE PLANE, EN ROUTE FROM CHICAGO O'HARE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TO JOHN WAYNE AIRPORT IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, WAS FORCED TO MAKE AN EMERGENCY LANDING IN WICHITA, KANSAS --

DESCENDING OVER 20,000 FEET IN TEN MINUTES, ACCORDING TO FLIGHTAWARE-DOT-COM.

"The first thing that went through my mind is the chute opened and it probably popped out the door which meant that we'd probably lose pressure immediately but luckily that didn't happen."

PASSENGERS TOOK TO SOCIAL MEDIA TO SHARE PICTURES AND VIDEO OF THE FRIGHTENING EXPERIENCE…

FORMER NEBRASKA QUARTERBACK TAYLOR MARTINEZ TWEETED THIS PICTURE OF THE SLIDE, WRITING, SCARIEST FLIGHT OF ALL TIME, HASHTAG EMERGENCY LANDING.

THIS SURVEILLANCE VIDEO TAKEN FROM INSIDE THE TROPICAL ISLE. SHOWS THE CHAOS ENSUE. AS PEOPLE SCRAMBLED TO TAKE COVER IN THE BAR.

I was in the back of the bar taking a cigarette break when all of a sudden I heard a lot of gunshots, it had to be like more than 8 of them.

JIMMY BURGIN, A BARTENDER AT TROPICAL ISLE IMMEDIATELY RAN TO THE FRONT DOORS TO HELP PUT THE BAR IN LOCKDOWN.

AND THAT'S WHEN HE SAW THIS 19-YEAR OLD WOMAN, FROM ARKANSAS, ON THE GROUND. SUFFERING FROM A BULLET WOUND TO THE ABDOMEN.

THERE. YOU SEE HIM. RUSH TO HER SIDE.

I was just wanting to see how bad off she was. I asked here if she able to breathe ok and everything and she could feel her legs. She told me everything was ok as far as that goes, it just really hurt bad.

ACCORDING TO SUPERINTENDENT RONAL SERPAS. TWO ARMED MEN GOT INTO A DISPUTE. AND BEGAN FIRING AT ONE ANOTHER. SPRAYING BULLETS INTO AN UNSUSPECTING CROWD ALONG BOURBON STREET.

THIS VIDEO FOOTAGE FROM EARTHCAM.COM CAPTURES A GLIMPSE OF ONE OF THE SHOOTERS AS HE TURNED THE GUN ON THE CROWD.

It was chaotic, ya know, everyone was trying to get help to the people that they saw were injured.

AJ GARCIA AND HIS GIRLFRIEND AMANDA HAWKINS. WERE AMONG THOSE THAT JUMPED INTO ACTION TO HELP ANOTHER WOUNDED VICTIM.NEARBY.

He was shot in the knee and then we lifted his pants up and he was just gushing blood:54 and i took my shirt off and my girlfriend tied it around his leg.

I work in the medical field so I knew you needed to tie it with a tourniquet and keep it elevated above his heart.

THE COUPLE SAYS THEY WERE GLAD THEY WERE THERE TO HELP. BUT IT WAS A TERRIFYING EXPERIENCE.

It was traumatizing. Definitely after that it ruined our whole night. We just wanted to go back to the hotel and make sure all of our friends were safe.

It leaves a nasty taste in my mouth. we were just walking back here to get some souvenirs and every step i took its not a good feeling because this is exactly where everything happened. Return to index of stories...
