A HARMFUL, SMELLY ALGAE IS SPREADING ALONG THE SANIBEL CAUSEWAY.

RESEARCHERS TELL US IT'S BEEN 8 YEARS SINCE THEY'VE SEEN THIS SPECIFIC TYPE OF BLOOM.

IT THREATENS TO KILL MARINE LIFE AND CRIPPLE THE FISHING INDUSTRY.

NBC-2'S LUCAS SEILER DISCOVERED THE CAUSE GOES BACK TO LAST SUMMER. Return to index of stories...

MYSTERY ALGAE SANIBEL-REM-LIVE

AT FIRST GLANCE, YOU'LL THINK IT'S JUST HOW THE SUN IS HITTING THE WATER, BUT RESEARCHERS CONFIRMED WITH US IT'S ACTUALLY A LARGE SCALE ALGAE BLOOM

UNTIL NOW, THEY WERE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHY IT'S ON SOUTHWEST FLORIDA'S COAST - NOW, WE KNOW FRESHWATER RELEASES FROM LAKE OKEECHOBEE A YEAR AGO ARE TO BLAME. Return to index of stories...

"Ugh! That's utterly disgusting."

GROWING INCH BY INCH

Gabrielle Harte, Sanibel "We were just walking and it smelled really bad."

OVERWHELMED BY THE STENCH, GABRIELLE HARTE STARTED WALKING AWAY FROM THE WATER. BUT NOT BEFORE GLANCING AT THIS MUSHY, SLIMY GOO NEXT TO HER FEET.

Gabrielle, Harte, Sanibel "You could smell it, you could see it. just, ugh. it's awful."

IT LEFT OTHERS WONDERING WHAT IT COULD BE - RESEMBLING SOMETHING DIFFERENT THAN YOUR TYPICAL ALGAE BLOOM.

Jarrod Salisbury, Fort Myers "I noticed there was something out there. thought it was a sandbar."

WHAT JARROD SALISBURY WAS REALLY LOOKING AT WAS A RARE ALGAE BLOOM CALLED LYNGBIA.

IT'S KNOWN TO CAUSE NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS IN HUMANS - LUCKILY, NOT THE KIND CAPABLE OF GROWING IN OUR REGION. THIS POSES ANOTHER THREAT -

Dr. Eric Milbrandt, SCCF Marine Lab Director "The problem is more of an ecological problem. where as you can see it's growing on top of the seagrass blades. it competes for life."

IT HASN'T BEEN SPOTTED IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA SINCE 2006.

THE CAUSE? HEAVY WATER RELEASES - OTHERWISE KNOWN AS FLOOD KILLS - FROM LAKE OKEECHOBEE LAST SUMMER.

Jarrod Salisbury, Fort Myers "It's kind of scary. I thought our beaches were cleaner than that."

OUR WATER MAY NOT BE DARK LIKE LAST YEAR, BUT WHAT LURKS ON THE SEA FLOOR IS WHAT LAST SUMMER LEFT BEHIND - ALGAE BLOOMS KILLING SEAGRASS JUST NOW SURFACING AND LINGERING.

Dr. Eric Milbrandt, SCCF Marine Lab Director "It overgrows everything and causes what we're experiencing now."

NOW, IT'S LEFT SWIMMERS WONDERING IF IT'S SAFE TO SWIM IN. AND FISHERMAN SECOND GUESSING THEIR CATCH. Return to index of stories...

MYSTERY ALGAE SANIBEL-REM-LIVE

THE WATER IS SAFE TO SWIM IN, BUT TRY TO AVOID THE ALGAE.

RESEARCHERS WILL BE TESTING THE BLOOM LATER THIS WEEK.

BUT THE SLIMY MESS WILL LIKELY STAY AROUND OUR SHORES FOR THE REST OF SUMMER. Return to index of stories...

SANIBEL SICK DOGS-OC

OVER THE PAST TWO WEEKS, A FEW DOG OWNERS HAVE REACHED OUT TO NBC-2 AFTER THEIR PETS GOT SICK AFTER VISITING THE CAUSEWAY ISLANDS.

VETERINARIANS COULD NOT FIGURE OUT WHAT WAS WRONG WITH THE ANIMALS.

BUT RESEARCHERS CANNOT SAY FOR SURE, THAT'S WHAT CAUSED THEM TO THROW UP AND HAVE SEIZURES. Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

TRACKING RAIN AND THE TROPICS

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible this evening as activity developing north of the region this afternoon progresses southward.

Even if the coverage of the storms remains isolated tonight, any activity that is able to develop will bring with it the chance for some bouts of locally heavy rain, strong wind, frequent lightning and hail.

Overnight temperatures look mild, cooling off only into the mid to upper 70s. Into the day on Monday, yet again conditions look very warm, as highs are expected back near 94 degrees in the afternoon.

TROPICAL UPDATE

We will continue to keep close watch on the weather feature that is swirling in the western Atlantic off the east coast of Florida. It's important to note we will not see a direct impact from this event in Southwest Florida. However, it will play indirect roles in our weather.

There is a high chance of the system continuing to organize and develop into the first named tropical system of the 2014 Atlantic hurricane season this week.

This feature is expected to push generally to the southwest, closer to Florida into Tuesday before hooking northward and moving up along the east coast of the US toward the 4th of July. This would push the system away from Southwest Florida in the long term.

Indirect impacts of this system will be felt on Tuesday in our region. With the system off Florida's east coast, atmospheric subsidence, or sinking air on the western side of the feature, could greatly limit the coverage of rainfall we see. Temperatures in this kind of setup can also get quite warm, as highs are forecast to return to the mid 90s. Return to index of stories...

Jim Towey

President, Ave Maria University

PEOPLE IN AVE MARIA ARE MAKING THEIR POINT CLEAR:

CONTRACEPTIVES DO NOT BELONG AT A CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY.

09:16-09:26

If someone wants to do that on their own that's their decision, but I don't think that people who have an issue with it should have to pay for it.

NOW THE UNIVERSITY IS ONE STEP CLOSER IN THE FIGHT AGAINST IT.

THE SUPREME COURT RULED TWO COMPANIES OWNED BY RELIGIOUS GROUPS SHOULD NOT BE FORCED TO PROVIDE CONTRACEPTIVES - SOME THAT GO AGAINST ITS BELIEFS.

Jim Towey

President, Ave Maria University

03:03-03:19

We're delighted with the court's ruling. It supports everything we've been arguing the last 28 months.

THE UNIVERSITY FILED SUIT AGAINST THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IN 2012.

THEY ARGUE CONDOMS AND BIRTH CONTROL ARE AGAINST THEIR BELIEFS.

THEY SAY THEY WILL NOT PAY TO PROVIDE THEM TO EMPLOYEES.

Jim Towey

President, Ave Maria University

04:48-04:56

The federal government can provide free contraception without forcing the little sisters of the poor and ave maria university to be their foot soldiers.

AS OF NOVEMBER 1ST THE UNIVERSITY MUST PROVIDE CONTRACEPTIVE COVERAGE OR FACE SERIOUS FINES.

WHILE THEIR FIGHT IS NOT OVER--

TOWEY IS OPTIMISTIC TODAY'S RULING WILL MOVE THEIR CASE FOWARD.

04:12-04:19

Now I'm hoping they will do the right thing and change the regulations so we can go back to being a university and not a plaintiff. Return to index of stories...
