Keeping watch on Tropical Storm Arthur

The first named tropical storm of the 2014 Atlantic hurricane season is located off the east coast of the peninsula. Newly-dubbed Tropical Storm Arthur will not be able to offer a direct impact on our weather in Southwest Florida, however we will continue to feel indirect influences as the storm begins to move northward.

The first of those impacts have resulted in diminishing the coverage and opportunity for widespread rain on our side of the state. Since we are located west of the center of circulation, drier air from the north has been moving southward on our side of the coast. That kept conditions predominately dry and very warm this afternoon.

Through this evening, any rain that is able to come together should remain isolated in nature. Overnight temperatures are expected in the mid to upper 70s.

On Wednesday, Tropical Storm Arthur will be moving north, and that will reorient the winds to hail from the west. This type of setup can work to offer the coastal regions the chance of a morning shower or downpour. Rain on Wednesday morning would again remain isolated in nature, and predominately along the coastline.

As the storm system continues its northward push through the end of the work week, we will experience a push back on the coverage of rain across the region. Most activity would be expected to develop mainly across the inland areas of the state on Thursday and Friday. Temperatures continue to look warm, topping out near 93 degrees on both afternoons. THE STOCK MARKET ENDED THE FIRST HALF OF THE YEAR THE SAME WAY IT BEGAN - AT MARKET HIGHS.

THE BIG QUESTION, OF COURSE, WILL THE MARKET CONTINUE THIS UPWARD TREND?

JIM NOLTE, WITH WELLS FARGO ADVISORS, IS WITH US TODAY TO DISCUSS WHERE THE MARKET HAS BEEN AND WHAT INVESTORS CAN EXPECT FOR THE SECOND HALF OF THE YEAR. Return to index of stories...

WELLS FARGO-PLASMA CG

Stocks and bonds are riding high as we begin the second half of 2014. For many investors this is a stressful time. In general, portfolios have performed very well in 2014, but is it time to take some profits? For those investors with money on the sidelines waiting for that elusive market pullback, is this the time to put more money in the market?

· It seems as the stock market has ratcheted higher in 2014, investors seem to be more concerned about a correction and less enthusiastic about putting more money in the market.

· There seemed to be a lot of volatility in the market during the first quarter of 2014. The net result, however were virtually flat returns.

· During the second quarter the stock market moved steadily higher. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 2.2% or 368.94 points to 16,826.

· The Dow posted 11 record highs along the way but couldn't break through the 17,000 mark.

· The S&P 500 posted 16 record closes in the second quarter. The S&P 500 was up 4.7% or 87.89 points, closing out the midyear at 1960.

· A quick point of interest, the second quarter was the S&P's six consecutive quarterly gain.

· The midyear scorecard shows the Dow up 1.5% for the year and the S&P up 6.1%.

· Interest rates stayed low throughout the second quarter. It's not surprising that one of the best performing parts of the market were stocks that offered big dividend payouts.

· Another standout performer during the second quarter was Real Estate Investment Trusts. The REIT index was up 7.2% including dividends.

· Most analysts agree that a primary driver behind the rallies in both stocks and bonds has been the aggressive efforts by the world's major central banks to literally flood the financial markets with money in order to keep the world economies moving forward.

· This has been a major concern of US investors as the Federal Reserve has begun to reduce their monetary stimulus.

· However as the US federal reserve is taking its foot off the gas, European and Japanese Central Banks continue to put the pedal to the metal.

· The expectation is that the U.S. economy will grow fast enough to keep corporate profits expanding. Some investors just aren't comfortable with that outlook.

· I've noticed that many clients are more focused on what can go wrong with their portfolios than on opportunities to make money in this market.

· The fear factor is alive and well. The main concern for investors is how the markets will fare if the Fed raises interest rates sooner than expected.

· So where do we go from here?

· If we are really objective it looks to me that the whole market is fairly valued - not overvalued.

· It seems to me that U.S. corporate profit growth will continue to plod along.

· If you follow seasonal trends in the market, summertime is marked by volatility and a sideways moving market.

· If we break it down by the month, July stands out as a pretty sunny month. Over the last 20 years the Dow Jones Industrial Average has been up in July 65% of the time

· I think investors can count on volatility. That means if you do have cash on the sidelines you need to take advantage of the pullbacks.

· Will probably see a typical sideways market this summer hopefully it will be biased to the upside. Return to index of stories...

THAT MEANS YOU'LL HAVE TO MOVE OVER OR AT LEAST SLOW DOWN IF YOU SEE ONE PULLED TO THE SIDE.

PAUL FLORES WITH WASTE PRO HOPES IT NOT ONLY KEEPS HIS DRIVERS SAFE - BUT ALSO EVERYONE ELSE ON THE ROAD.

Safety is our number one issue. And this law would help us support that 10:09

FLORES TOLD US SIX YEARS AGO - ONE OF HIS WORKERS WAS SERIOUSLY INJURED IN NORTH FORT MYERS.

10:37 -

Slow down. Yield to them. Move around them slowly. Give them a cushion or a safety zone so that they don't get injured while they're doing their job 10:49

the one possible downside for drivers is that they could still get those points and fines if they violated the revised law, much like they would if this was an emergency vehicle

IT'S SHOCKING BUT MUCH MORE COMMON THAN YOU MIGHT THINK…CHILDREN LEFT IN CARS WHEN TEMPERATURES ARE SOARING…

"This happens to the most loving and caring parents. Literally we have had a veterinarian, a doctor, a dentist, a professor, a school principal and even a rocket scientist."

DANIEL GRAY WAS JUST SENTENCED TO 4 YEARS IN PRISON AFTER PLEADING GUILTY TO MANSLAUGHTER AFTER LEAVING HIS INFANT IN A CAR FOR 3 HOURS DURING A HOT ARIZONA SUMMER.

AND SHANESHA TAYLOR OF SCOTTSDALE LEFT HER CHILD IN THE CAR IN MARCH WITH THE WINDOWS CRACKED OPEN WHILE SHE WENT ON A JOB INTERVIEW. SHE IS BEING CHARGED WITH FELONY CHILD ABUSE. SHE'S PLEADED NOT GUILTY.

"There are an average 38 per year…children who die in a hot car. It's 38 children too many. It's too much of a tragedy for these families."

ACCORDING TO A SAN FRANCISCO STATE UNIVERSITY STUDY.SINCE 1998 THERE HAVE BEEN 619 HEATSTROKE DEATHS OF CHILDREN LEFT IN CARS. MORE THAN HALF WERE FORGOTTEN BY THEIR CAREGIVER. WHILE 18-PERCENT WERE LEFT ON PURPOSE. ANOTHER 29-PERCENT WERE PLAYING IN AN UNATTENDED CAR.

"One of the messages we try to get across to parents…is that no one is immune to this. It really could happen to anyone."

HOW QUICKLY DOES A TEMPERATURE RISE INSIDE OF A CAR, EVEN IF IT IF IT'S NOT THAT HOT OUTSIDE?

THE JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRICS CONDUCTED A STUDY AND THE RESULTS ARE STUNNING!

EVEN ON A COOL 73 DEGREE DAY, THE TEMPERATURE GOES UP AN AVERAGE OF MORE THAN 3 DEGREES EVERY 5 MINUTES. FASTER IN THE FIRST 30 MINUTES AS IT QUICKLY SHOOTS ABOVE 100 DEGREES.

S/U: EVEN IN RELATIVELY COOL VEHICLES TEMPERATURES REACHED UPWARDS OF 117 DEGREES AND THIS MAY SURPRISE YOU.EVEN CRACKING THE WINDOWS…DIDN'T HELP MUCH. THE TEMPERATURE CONTINUED TO RISE.

SOME BELIEVE THE ANSWER IS TECHNOLOGY. THERE ARE SOLUTIONS INTENDED TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM. ONE YOUNG, ASPIRING INVENTOR CREATED A LEASH TO REMIND PARENTS THERE IS STILL A CHILD LEFT IN THE CAR, BUT WILL PARENTS BUY IN?

"The biggest challenge with the technology is convincing parents that they need it. No parent wants to believe this could happen to them."

CHANCES ARE YOUR PHARMACIST KNOWS YOU BETTER THAN YOU THINK- IF YOU REFILL AT THE SAME LOCATION- THEY MAY BE PRIMELY POSITIONED TO SPOT A PROBLEM.

JOHN ARMISTEAD/DIR PHARMACY LMHS

RUNS:

2:28 Thirty percent of medications are really not refilled by the patient after that first fill. And so there's a lot of therapy that maybe the primary care provider or specialist might think a patient is on but they really are not on on an ongoing basis.

NON-COMPLIANCE IS A HUGE PROBLEM. MOSTLY RESULTING FROM DANGEROUS MEDICATION MIXUPS OR SKIPPED MEDS. STUDIES FIND UP TO 70% OF PATIENTS NEVER ASK THEIR PHARMACIST QUESTIONS OR EXPRESS CONCERNS.

JOHN ARMISTEAD/DIR PHARMACY LMHS

RUNS:

2:48 Sometimes the patient is experiencing some side effects and then they decide they're not going to take that one any more. They often do not report back to the physician that they don't feel well well while they take that medication.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

Instead- patients should feel comfortable speaking up. A pharmacist does much more than count pills and measure medicines. They are trained in the ways drugs affect the body and interact with each other.

JOHN ARMISTEAD/DIR PHARMACY LMHS

RUNS:

:45 Medication therapy is really a key to self-care in home environment. So it's absolutely essential that a patient understand why they are taking a medication, what side effects might they experience if they're taking that medication, and who to contact if they do have problems.

PRESCRIPTION DRUGS ARE A COMPLICATED BUSINESS- SO WHEN YOU HAVE DOUBT- CHECK IT OUT. WITH A PROFESSIONAL. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
