FIRST WEATHER-WX ANI BOX

Expect plenty of heat this afternoon as dry air slips into the region as Hurricane Arthur moves northward. The dry air will suppress the chance for rain this afternoon, with just very isolated activity expected in inland areas.

Expect highs to climb just slightly above average, around 93° in Ft. Myers and 88° in Naples.

Overnight this evening we stay completely dry with sticky conditions. Lows in the mid to upper 70s again.

Independence Day

A few coastal showers in the early morning will be possible again but most will be dry. TS Arthur continues on its northerly track and should be making near landfall, potentially as a category 1 hurricane, near the Outer Banks of North Carolina early Friday morning.

As far Southwest Florida goes, things are actually looking pretty good. We stay dry during the afternoon and hot. Highs in the low 90s. Dry after sunset during firework festivities. Overnight temperatures stay in the mid 70s.

Holiday Weekend

More summer like pattern returns for Saturday and Sunday. Rain chances and storm potential ramps up in the afternoon hours. The heat sticks around too. Area wide we look to stay in the low 90s for highs and mid 70s for lows.

Hurricane Arthur

The 11 a.m. update from the NHC reveals that the storms maximum sustained winds have increased to 90 mph and remains a Category 1 Hurricane, the first named hurricane of the 2014 Atlantic Hurricane Season.

As of Thursday morning, the storm was located about 260 miles southwest of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.

The storm will continue moving toward the north, making near landfall to the Outer Banks of North Carolina as a potential Category 2 storm. Emergency officials have issued mandatory evacuations on a barrier island there as the storm is expected to hit early Friday morning. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

HOT AND MOSTLY DRY FOR JULY 4TH

It was another hot and humid day across the region, with temps pushing into the low 90s. A few scattered showers did develop inland and this activity will diminish this evening, with temps only falling into the 80s. Expect another very warm overnight, with lows only down in the mid to upper 70s.

Independence Day

It's shaping up to be a mostly dry - but hot - July 4th for Southwest Florida. Dry air will remain in place courtesy of Hurricane Arthur, and the result will be reduced rain chances. A couple isolated showers will be possible in the morning time frame with onshore flow continuing.

Most of the area will stay dry throughout the day, with the exception of a few isolated showers inland. Highs for Independence Day will be in the low 90s, with temps for the fireworks shows in the 80s.

Moisture does slowly return to the area starting Saturday. This will bring slightly better rain and storm chances to the area, although many locations will likely stay dry. Highs on Saturday will be in the low 90s.

Even more moisture works in on Sunday, and this will be our best chance for rain and storms over the holiday weekend. The rain and storms should hold off until the afternoon and early evening hours, with temps holding in the low 90s.

The typical morning sunshine-PM storms weather pattern returns by next week, with temps in the low 90s.

Hurricane Arthur

Hurricane Arthur remains a strong Category 1 hurricane in the 2 pm advisory from the National Hurricane Center, with sustained winds of 90 mph and gusts of 115 mph. Arthur is now 225 miles southwest of Cape Hatteras, N.C.

The hurricane is still expected to strengthen to a Category 2 storm this evening before impacting the eastern coastline of North Carolina. Hurricane Warnings remain in effect for much of coastal North Carolina.

Winds approaching 100 mph and storm surge of 3 to 5 feet will be possible with Arthur as it slides across coastal areas of North Carolina.

Arthur will exit quickly early Friday morning, and may cause some impacts to the Cape Cod area of New England before heading toward Eastern Canada. Return to index of stories...

WHILE IT'S SURGERY OR MEDICAL INTERVENTION THAT MAY SAVE A HEART PATIENT'S LIFE, CARDIAC REHAB SAVES THEIR QUALITY OF LIFE.

ALEXIS COLLINS/REGISTERED NURSE

RUNS:

1:25 We see people up to from two weeks to up to almost a year after their event. So it depends on how big of an event they had and how quickly their doctor refers them.

FOR THREE MONTHS- HEALTH PROFESSIONALS WILL PUT HEART PATIENTS THROUGH THE PACES. A MIX OF MEDICALLY SUPERVISED EXERCISE CLASSES AND SOLO WORKOUTS, EACH PATIENT WEARS A HEART MONITOR.

ALEXIS COLLINS/REGISTERED NURSE

RUNS:

7:47 They put on the monitor so one of us is always watching them, then they can do the treadmill, walking, air-o-dyne biking, rowing, the elliptical machine, the stair master and so on.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

Along with coaching and goals, patients also get education- taking aim at many of the very issues that broke their hearts. They learn how to better manage diet, blood pressure even quit smoking. It's crash course in cardiovascular health and it's making a difference.

ALEXIS COLLINS/REGISTERED NURSE

RUNS:

3:05 They see it, we see it. We watch them get stronger. Their heart actually benefits from the program itself. A lot of times too depression is not uncommon after a cardiac event, so we actually see progression in mental stability too.

GEORGE HAYS WORKS WITH THE PROGRAM, BUT HE WAS ALSO A PATIENT- AFTER UNDERGOING A STENTING PROCEDURE TO OPEN A SEVERELY BLOCKED ARTERY.

GEORGE HAYS/CARDIAC EXERCISE SPECIALIST

RUNS:

3:56: Now I can empathize with people. Before I could only sympathize. They always have that thing where 'you never went through this so you don't know' Yes I have.

THE RESULT IS A CHANGE OF HEART- THAT KEEPS PEOPLE UP AND RUNNING.

NATS/fighting in Syria

-BANG BANG-

THE WAR IN SYRIA IS THE FOCUS OF THIS LATEST THREAT.

SECURITY SOURCES BELIEVE MILITANTS THERE HAVE BEEN WORKING WITH BOMB MAKERS IN YEMEN WHO REMAIN DETERMINED TO ATTACK WESTERN TARGETS, ESPECIALLY THE U.S.

THE CONCERN:

HUNDREDS OF EUROPEANS AND A HANDFUL OF AMERICANS WHO'VE JOINED THE EXTREMISTS ALSO HOLD WESTERN PASSPORTS THAT COULD GIVE THEM EASIER ACCESS TO A U.S.-BOUND PLANE.

HOMELAND SECURITY SECRETARY JEH JOHNSON ON MSNBC's RACHEL MADDOW SHOW WEDNESDAY:

"We're tracking that population and we're very concerned about it because there are extremists within the border of Syria that would like to indoctrinate these people and send them back to their own countries with a different purpose."

WHILE THE TSA SETS A SECURITY STANDARD FOR U.S.-BOUND FLIGHTS COMING FROM FOREIGN AIRPORTS, THE U.S. IS NOW ASKING AIRLINES AND THOSE AIRPORTS TO RAMP UP THEIR SECURITY.

INCLUDING:

-MORE RANDOM PASSENGER PATDOWNS.

-MORE SCREENING OF CARRY-ON BAGS.

-MORE SWABBING FOR EXPLOSIVE RESIDUE.

-AND EXTRA SCRUTINY OF ELECTRONICS.

"Barack Obama, we are coming for you!"

NBC NEWS HAS LEARNED THE HEIGHTENED CONCERN IS BASED ON INTERCEPTED COMMUNICATIONS, THE TRAVEL PATTERNS OF FOREIGN FIGHTERS, AND THE RISK THAT SECURITY SCREENING COULD BE COMPROMISED AT CERTAIN FOREIGN AIRPORTS.

"The fact is that terrorists in Syria, Iraq, and elsewhere continue to refine their methods of attack and that means as they advance, we have to advance as well, and that requires new screening methods and heightened vigilance." Return to index of stories...

YOU CAN SEE THE SMALLER SUSPECT ON HIS CELL PHONE.HE TRIES TO HOP OVER THE COUNTER BUT FAILS MISERABLY. ALL OF THE COMMOTION ALERTED THE OWNER WHO WAS IN THE BACKROOM WITH HIS DAUGHTER AND 2-MONTH OLD GRANDCHILD.HE GRABBED THIS SHOTGUN AND GOT THEIR ATTENTION.

SEEING THAT HE WAS LOCKED AND LOADED.THE TWO WOULD-BE ROBBERS QUICKLY SCURRIED OUT THE FRONT DOOR. LLAMAS SAYS THE SUSPECTS ARE LUCKY TO HAVE RUN INTO HIS BROTHER AND NOT HIM.

"Cause he's a very humble guy and he's got kids their age and he saw the nervous kids they didn't know what they were doing and he pretty much let them get away."

LLAMAS HOPES SOMEONE WATCHING THIS STORY RECOGNIZE THESE TWO. AND IS ABLE TO HELP POLICE GET THEM OFF THE STREETS.

"Being that out of control themselves they can shoot around and hurt other people, so they definitely need to get caught and be tried for what they did." Return to index of stories...
