5:00 WEATHER LEAD-WX WALL

Today's Weather StoryAnother muggy start to Thursday morning here in Southwest Florida. As the day progresses, there is a less than 20% chance of storms rolling in from the gulf during the early morning hours. These will be few and far between and will quickly fizzle out once further inland.

This afternoon, thanks to TS Arthur, dry air is moving into our region as the storm lifts northward. That dry air works in our favor by helping reduce rain chances this afternoon. Calling it mostly sunny today and dry. However, it will still be very muggy out.

Expect highs to climb just slightly above average, around 93° in Ft. Myers and 88° in Naples.

Overnight this evening we stay completely dry with sticky conditions. Lows in the mid to upper 70s again.

Independence Day

A few coastal showers in the early morning will be possible again but most will be dry. TS Arthur continues on its northerly track and should be making near landfall, potentially as a category 1 hurricane, near the Outer Banks of North Carolina early Friday morning.

As far Southwest Florida goes, things are actually looking pretty good. We stay dry during the afternoon and hot. Highs in the low 90s. Dry after sunset during firework festivities. Overnight temperatures stay in the mid 70s.

Holiday Weekend

More summer like pattern returns for Saturday and Sunday. Rain chances and storm potential ramps up in the afternoon hours. The heat sticks around too. Area wide we look to stay in the low 90s for highs and mid 70s for lows.

Tropical Storm Arthur

Overnight, Arthur continued to strengthen. As of late Wednesday night the storm had a well defined eye wall, indicative of strengthening. Latest NHC update states the storm has maximum sustained winds of 70 mph and is moving north towards the Carolinas around 7 mph.

Tropical Storm & Hurricane Warnings are in place for some coastal areas of both North & South Carolina.

Arthur is expected to strengthen into a category 1 hurricane sometime Thursday and will like graze the central coast of North Carolina before moving toward the Cape Cod area of New England.

SUMMER LAZINESS-ONCAM

SUMMER IS HERE.

THERE MAY BE A GOOD REASON FOR THAT.

AS DEVIN SCILLIAN REPORTS.

SOME RESEARCHERS ATTRIBUTE IT TO INGRAINED SEASONAL BEHAVIOR. Return to index of stories...

SUMMER LAZINESS-PKG

"People want to be more lazy in the summer for sure."

FACE IT -- WHERE WOULD YOU RATHER BE HERE. OR THERE.

"From the time we're pretty young we've developed impressions that summertime is associated with more leisure, less critical thinking, less requirement, and we really live that out."

CLEVELAND CLINIC PSYCHOLOGIST DOCTOR SCOTT BEA SAYS WE START ASSOCIATING SUMMER WITH 'KICKING BACK' AS CHILDREN. AND NEVER LET GO.

STUDIES HAVE SHOWN WHEN THE WEATHER IS NICE, PEOPLE TEND TO FOCUS MORE ON WHAT THEY'D RATHER BE DOING, NOT ON THE TASK AT HAND.

HARVARD RESEARCHERS FOUND JUST SHOWING PEOPLE PICTURES OF NICE WEATHER DECREASED THEIR PRODUCTIVITY.

THEN, THERE'S THE HEAT --

"You can learn calculus in a room that's 120 degrees, but it's a lot easier when it's just 70 degrees and actually, that's what they find. That the optimal temperature is somewhere between 72 and 81 degrees for our brains to operate."

FEELING MENTALLY LAZY DOESN'T MEAN WE'RE LESS PHYSICALLY ACTIVE. JUST THE OPPOSITE, SAY MOST PEOPLE.

"I think it gets us more active when we can enjoy the weather, because we only have a short period of time for that weather."

"I take my kids for bike rides, we go to the park all the time."

"When the sun comes out, it makes you want to get your day started."

BUT IF YOU DO WANT A BREAK FROM YOUR USUAL PACE --

"I don't think it's such a bad thing. There are other cultures who take an entire month off where things shut down and people recreate during the hottest month of the year." Return to index of stories...

SUMMER LAZINESS-TAG

5:52 FORECAST ON THE 2'S-WX WALL

Full ForecastAnother muggy start to Thursday morning here in Southwest Florida.
