OT AND MOSTLY DRY FOR JULY 4TH

It was another hot and humid day across the region, with temps pushing into the low 90s. A few scattered showers did develop inland and this activity will diminish this evening, with temps only falling into the 80s. Expect another very warm overnight, with lows only down in the mid to upper 70s.

Independence Day

It's shaping up to be a mostly dry - but hot - July 4th for Southwest Florida. Dry air will remain in place courtesy of Hurricane Arthur, and the result will be reduced rain chances. A couple isolated showers will be possible in the morning time frame with onshore flow continuing.

Most of the area will stay dry throughout the day, with the exception of a few isolated showers inland. Highs for Independence Day will be in the low 90s, with temps for the fireworks shows in the 80s.

Moisture does slowly return to the area starting Saturday. This will bring slightly better rain and storm chances to the area, although many locations will likely stay dry. Highs on Saturday will be in the low 90s.

Even more moisture works in on Sunday, and this will be our best chance for rain and storms over the holiday weekend. The rain and storms should hold off until the afternoon and early evening hours, with temps holding in the low 90s.

The typical morning sunshine-PM storms weather pattern returns by next week, with temps in the low 90s.

Hurricane Arthur

Hurricane Arthur remains a strong Category 1 hurricane in the 2 pm advisory from the National Hurricane Center, with sustained winds of 90 mph and gusts of 115 mph. Arthur is now 225 miles southwest of Cape Hatteras, N.C.

The hurricane is still expected to strengthen to a Category 2 storm this evening before impacting the eastern coastline of North Carolina. Hurricane Warnings remain in effect for much of coastal North Carolina.

Winds approaching 100 mph and storm surge of 3 to 5 feet will be possible with Arthur as it slides across coastal areas of North Carolina.

Arthur will exit quickly early Friday morning, and may cause some impacts to the Cape Cod area of New England before heading toward Eastern Canada. Return to index of stories...

AN EXTREMELY EMOTIONAL MORNING IN A LEE COUNTY COURTROOM FOR THE FAMILY OF A LITTLE BOY -- WHO DROWNED AT HIS LEHIGH ACRES DAYCARE.

55:10-

"I just kept screaming, 'I want to hold my baby."

THE FAMILY OF 2-YEAR OLD CHRISTIAN BYRD ASKED THE JUDGE TO GIVE THE DAYCARE'S OWNER THE MAXIUMUM PRISON SENTENCE -- 5 YEARS.

BUT IN THE END -- THE JUDGE DECIDED PRISON TIME DIDN'T FIT THE CRIME -- AND SENTENCED MELISSA SMITH TO 8 MONTHS IN THE COUNTY JAIL.

NBC-2 ANCHOR STACEY DEFFENBAUGH WAS IN THE COURTROOM AS THE EMOTION UNFOLDED. Return to index of stories...

A GRIEVING MOTHER BEGGED THE JUDGE FOR JUSTICE FOR HER YOUNG SON -- WHO LOVED BATMAN AND SNUGGLING WITH HIS MOM.

I received a life sentence as a grieving mother and my son received the death sentence.

FOR 5 MINUTES, A MOTHER -- WHO VISITS HER SON'S GRAVE EVERY SUNDAY --TALKED ABOUT THE HAPPY TIMES SHE SHARED WITH HER PRIDE AND JOY.

SHE ALSO RE-LIVED THE HORRIBLE DAY SHE GOT AN UNTHINKABLE PHONE CALL SAYING HER 2-YEAR SON WAS DEAD.

" I feel like i've been put through a food processor, and beaten to a pulp. I still wake up and i push through the pain and I don't give up for one reason, my son."

A YEAR AGO, CHRISTIAN BYRD DROWNED IN A KIDDIE POOL IN SMITH'S BACKYARD IN LEHIGH ACRES.

SHE RAN A SMALL DAYCARE OUT OF HER HOME AND LEFT CHRISTIAN UNSUPERVISED IN THE POOL WHILE SHE WENT TO THE BATHROOM.

A JURY FOUND MELISSA SMITH NOT GUILTY OF MANSLAUGHTER --

AND INSTEAD -- CONVICTED HER OF A LESSER CHARGE OF CHILD NEGLECT AND NEGLIGENCE, WHICH CARRIES A MAXIUM SENTENCE OF 5 YEARS.

TODAY -- THE LITTLE BOY'S FAMILY FILLED THE COURTROOM, WEARING T-SHIRTS AND HOLDING POSTERS WITH HIS PICTURE.

SMITH'S FAMILY BEGGED FOR LENENCY -- SAYING THERE ARE NO WINNERS AND SMITH SHOULD BE ABLE TO BE WITH HER YOUNG CHILDREN WHO ARE 9 AND 13.

"We have a woman who is a pretty good person who made a big mistake and there is someone on the other side who is grieving horribly and i understand their grief. so it is tough."

THE JUDGE WHO'S BEEN ON THE BENCH FOR 40 YEARS, SAID THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT CASES OF HIS CAREER --

BUT SAID HE COULD NOT GIVE SMITH THE MAXIMUM SENTENCE.

SHE WILL SPEND 8 MONTHS IN COUNTY JAIL AND SERVE 5 YEARS OF PROBATION. HER ATTORNEY ESTIMATES SHE WILL BE OUT BY CHRISTMAS.

DEPUTIES SAY HE'S ANYTHING BUT NICE -- THEY SAY ROOSA SOLD THEM OXYCODONE PILLS IN DECEMBER.

THEY ARRESTED HIM YESTERDAY IN OPERATION SUMMER HEAT.

IT'S A HARD PUSH BY DEPUTIES TO GET DRUG USERS AND DEALERS OFF THE STREETS.

IN JUST ONE WEEK IT RESULTED IN 66 ARRESTS ON 335 CHARGES.

"I don't want them on the street they need to be but we need to be getting the ones that are supplying the suppliers you know. I mean you got a dealer here and he dealed what some pills or something like that?"

ACCORDING TO SHERIFF BILL PRUMMELL THE ARRESTS ARE CLEANING UP THE COUNTY.

"They may be considered small time dealers, they may be just users, but that's where you start to get to the big guy."

PRUMMELL SAYS MOST OF THE DRUGS COME FROM OUTSIDE OF CHARLOTTE COUNTY AND HE'S TIRED OF IT.

"They can either straighten up, get their act together, become a part of our community. Or they can go to jail. Or quite frankly they can get the hell out of my county becuase we don't want 'em here. None of us want them here."

PRUMMELL TELLS US OPERATION SUMMER HEAT IS JUST THE START OF HIS OFFICE TARGETING DRUG DEALERS.

HE HOPES THESE ARRESTS LEAD TO SUPPLIERS --

SOMETHING RESIDENTS WANT, TOO.

"Those are the guys we gotta take out they're the ones we need to get out of the equationif people like Jonathan if that's indeed what he did, if he's dealing or not, if they don't have the product to deal, they're not dealing."

PRUMMELL SAYS THERE ARE 15 ARRESTS AND 20 MORE CASES PENDING IN THE OPERATION.
