WEATHERHOT 4TH OF JULY WEEKEND

The weather this weekend will continue to feature hot and humid afternoon conditions marked with a few thunderstorms in the afternoon. Evening temperatures this weekend will continue to provide only a little relief as the thermometers dip to the mid/upper 70's in the morning.

Rain showers and thunderstorms have been elusive for the past few days and this forth of July afternoon is no exception. All the rain showers and thunderstorms are deep inland thanks to the persistent southwest steering winds. A few showers may pop up in the Gulf of Mexico this evening and drift onshore; however, I don't expect to track a lot of showers and most all the fireworks shows should go off without any weather problems.

Looking to Saturday and Sunday, the forecast calls for a few more afternoon storms to track each day. Chance for showers will still favor inland areas during the afternoon, but some early evening storms could build back to the coast around sunset. High temperatures both days will be in the 90's and it will continue to be humid. Return to index of stories...

NORTH CAROLINA'S GOVERNOR SAYS HIS STATE IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS, AFTER A GLANCING BLOW FROM HURRICANE ARTHUR OVERNIGHT.

"There's been minimal damage, and right now we have people throughout the world beginning again to enjoy North Carolina Beaches."

THE STORM HAS WEAKENED TO A CATEGORY ONE STORM. IT'S CURRENTLY OFF THE COAST OF VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND AND HEADED NORTHEAST TOWARD CAPE COD.

ARTHUR MAY BE GONE, BUT SOME DAMAGE REMAINS.

THOUSANDS REMAIN WITHOUT POWER, AND TOWNS LIKE NAG'S HEAD ARE STILL DEALING WITH FLOODING.

IN ATLANTIC BEACH, RESIDENTS ARE ASSESSING THE DAMAGE.

"It was very quiet after 10. The winds were still blowing but it wasn't anything scary, and you could hear transformers popping. lights going off, but they came right back on."

FOR PEOPLE TRYING TO SALVAGE THEIR HOLIDAY AT THE BEACH. THE BIGGEST THREAT IS RIP CURRENTS THAT CAN EASILY DRAG A SWIMMER OUT TO SEA.

SO FAR, THERE ARE NO REPORTS OF CASUALTIES OR SERIOUS INJURIES.

"We're glad the public took our warnings. Because of that we reduced the negative impacts of Hurricane Arthur." Return to index of stories...

JUSTIN HARRIS SAT IN A JAIL JUMPSUIT IN HIS PROBABLE CAUSE HEARING THURSDAY. CRYING OCCASIONALLY. AS DETECTIVES DETAILED THE DAY HIS 22-MONTH-OLD SON COOPER DIED INSIDE HIS SWELTERING S-U-V.

Prosecutor: How long does it take to get from having left the Chick fil-A parking lot to that light?

Stoddard: 30 to 40 seconds.

Prosecutor: So 30 to 40 seconds from the time he has strapped his child in, kissed him, and then he says he forgot.

Stoddard: Correct.

POLICE SAY HARRIS LEFT THE TODDLER STRAPPED INTO A CAR SEAT FOR SEVEN HOURS.

HARRIS SAYS HE FORGOT THE BOY WAS IN THE VEHICLE UNTIL AFTER HE LEFT WORK, AT WHICH POINT HE PULLED INTO A PARKING LOT.

LEONARD MADDEN SAYS HE WITNESSED WHAT HAPPENED NEXT…

"He was saying, oh my God, oh my God, my son is dead, oh my God, my son is dead."

POLICE SAY HARRIS MADE ODD STATEMENTS AFTER THE BOY'S DEATH. ABOUT BEING CHARGED WITH A FELONY AND LOSING HIS JOB.

AND THEY SAY HARRIS HAD BEEN LIVING A SECOND LIFE, WITH ALTERNATE PERSONAS.

Stoddard: He was having up to six different conversations with different women, it appeared, from the messages from Kick mostly, which is a messaging service.

Question: And is that a computer-related messaging service?

Stoddard: It is.

Question: And these conversations he was having with these females, of what nature were they?

Stoddard: The most common term would be sexting.

POLICE SAY ONE OF THE FEMALES HARRIS WAS SEXTING. WAS 17 YEARS OLD.

THE DEFENSE ATTORNEY OBJECTED VIGOROUSLY TO THAT TESTIMONY.

AND SAID THIS WAS A HORRIBLE ACCIDENT. URGING THE JUDGE TO DISMISS THE CASE.

"It's not criminal negligence - it's a tragic accident."

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

HOT 4TH OF JULY WEEKEND
