TODAY'S WEATHER-WX CENTER

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

After a clear and quiet night for all the 4th of July celebrations across Southwest Florida, we're set to see an uptick in rain chances over the weekend as we transition into more of a routine summer pattern.

Most of us will start of the morning with sunny and mainly dry weather, but don't be surprised if a few spotty showers develop close to the coast through the morning.

The prime time for showers and storms will be from the mid afternoon through the early evening, and the highest concentration of storms will develop deeper inland. However, there is the potential that a few of our inland storms may push back toward the coast as we head into the late afternoon and evening.

Outside of today's storms, expect tons of sun and plenty of heat with temperatures soaring into the low to mid 90s through the afternoon.

At the beaches, temperatures won't be quite as toasty, and the forecast looks pretty nice for all the boaters and beach goers; winds will be light and variable through the morning and then becoming southwesterly by the afternoon at 5-10. Our inland waters should stay pretty smooth today unless you're close to a thunderstorm. The water temperature in the Gulf is 88 degrees at Fort Myers Beach.

For the second half of our weekend, expect to see a few more storms developing Sunday afternoon, particularly over our inland communities, but like today, the storms will tend to migrate closer to the coast later in the day.

We stay in a very routine summer pattern as we head into the upcoming week; each day will feature hot, humid, and sunny conditions with highs in the low to mid 90s before the storms start roaming around Southwest Florida by the afternoon and evening.

ARTHUR WEAKENING AND RACING AWAY

Tropical Storm Arthur is weakening quickly today as it races over the Canadian Maritimes. Arthur's impacts on the northeastern U.S. is now fading, and the storm will quickly lose its tropical status later this weekend as it gets pulled northward into the higher latitudes.

Elsewhere in the tropics, all is quiet, and no tropical development is expected in the immediate future. Return to index of stories...

WATER BABIES-PKG

It's a scene any parent can imagine. Look away -- just for a second -- and in that moment.

.your child could become one of the more than 700 children who die from drowning each year.

But keep watching: this boy is only a year and half old -- and he already knows how to float.and swim.

This video is part of a public awareness campaign for a program called ISR, which teaches kids to flip on their backs, float, and swim - often before they can even walk.

SOT JoAnn: These skills should never ever ever be a substitute for adult supervision. Fences around pools, alarms on the gates-- a child has no business in the water alone or around the water.

But drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children 1 to 4 years old. And the skills these kids learn can save their lives.

NATS

We are there.for 7-month-old Emma's first lesson.

SOT JoAnn, in water: I want her to learn that the water will float her because when she assumes the correct posture, the water *will* float her.

Jenna: Mom, did that make you nervous at all when she went under?

Caroline: A little.

But, she'll be back … for 10 minutes a day, 5 days a week for 6 weeks.

JW do you include this at some point as part of their lesson plan? They will at some point have to go in with their clothes and learn how to float? / Yes

The lessons have already paid off for the Parker family. Their son Lucas fell into the deep end of their pool last year, when he was only 3.

Dad: He just popped out, went onto his back, into his float, and then climbed out of the pool

On the day of our visit, his sister Kylie is finishing the course.

Jenna how old is she? One? And she can already swim? That's so great.

SHORTEN: 12500 NATS JoAnn: Just gently let go of him. / Jenna: Really? / JoAnn: Just let go / Jenna Wow

It's 7 month old Quinn's last day of instruction, too.

SOT Jake: Her parents have a pool. We're there all the time. And, you know, god forbid somethin' happens where he just walks out back and decides to jump in. So we thought it'd be-- a good investment.

JoAnn flips him and he rolls over

And it's one that's paid off.

JW: Wow. That was incredible. That was absolutely incredible.

Jake: The instinct is to go help - like he can't do it - but he just goes and does it, and it just - it just blows your mind.

Jenna: off-cam: you haven't seen that yet, have you? / Is it all worth it?

Jenna: You made daddy cry / He's proud of you -- He's so proud of you

CLOSING LINE: Proud.with peace of mind.

FIRST WEATHER-WX CENTER

FIRST WEATHER-WX CENTER
