IT WAS A CLOSE CALL FOR NEIGHBORS IN LEHIGH ACRES TODAY.

A LIGHTNING STRIKE IGNITED A BRUSH FIRE JUST FEET AWAY FROM THEIR NIMITZ BOULEVARD HOMES.

AS NBC-2'S TRENT KELLY REPORTS --

WHAT THEY DID NEXT, LIKELY SAVED THEM FROM WATCHING THEIR PRIZED POSSESSIONS GO UP IN FLAMES. Return to index of stories...

LEHIGH BRUSH FIRE-PKG

Juan Triay / Lehigh Acres

"It shook the house, I mean it felt like a bomb going off."

A TERRIFYING FEW MOMENTS FOR NEIGHBORS ALONG NIMITZ BOULEVARD IN LEHIGH ACRES ON SUNDAY.

Lisa Snodgrass / Lehigh Acres

"It was just this loud sound, I thought it was gunshots or something. It was like boom, boom, boom."

NOT GUNSHOTS -- BUT RATHER, A LIGHTNING STRIKE. JUST FEET AWAY FROM THE HOME OF JUAN TRIAY.

Juan Triay / Lehigh Acres

"I jumped up and ran outside."

Trent Kelly / Reporting

"Just seconds after hearing the thunder, neighbors rushed out of their homes to notice a good portion of land -- just feet away from their house -- was burning in a brush fire."

Juan Triay / Lehigh Acres

"It was some red-hot flames."

DETERMINED NOT TO LET MOTHER NATURE GET THE BEST OF HIS HOME. TRIAY AND A FEW OF HIS FELLOW NEIGHBORS GRABBED ANYTHING THEY COULD TO BATTLE BACK THE FLAMES -- INCLUDING A GARDEN HOSE.

Juan Triay / Lehigh Acres

"One person went over there and started wetting everything down, and I tried to get as close as I could here to try and get everything wet down."

AFTER WHAT FELT LIKE FOREVER. THESE AMATEUR FIREFIGHTERS WERE ABLE TO PUT OUT MOST OF THE FLAMES.

Juan Triay / Lehigh Acres

"It seemed like an eternity, but it was probably about three or four minutes to put it out, cause we caught it right away."

QUICK-THINKING NEIGHBORS RISKING THEIR OWN SAFETY -- IN ORDER TO SAVE THEIR HOMES.

Lisa Snodgrass / Lehigh Acres

"It was just. it was scary."

Juan Triay / Lehigh Acres

"If we hadn't looked. it just would've gotten out of control."

TAMPA MOM CHILD IN CAR-PKG

SAINT PETERSBURG POLICE SAY NATASHA GRAVER LEFT HER FOUR MONTH OLD DAUGHTER ALONE IN A HOT CAR, NOT ONCE BUT TWICE IN THE SAME DAY.

AND IT LANDED HER BEHIND BARS.

PEOPLE WHO KNOW THIS MOTHER OF FIVE SAY THE NEWS IS SURPRISING.

It's a shock to me because she always have the baby with her.

GRAVER TOLD POLICE SHE FORGOT HER DAUGHTER WAS IN THE BACK SEAT OF HER VAN WHEN SHE WENT TO THE FUNERAL OF THE THREE WOMEN KILLED IN THAT HIT-AND-RUN CRASH.

AND ONCE THE FUNERAL SERVICE WAS OVER SHE WENT HOME-ONLY TO FORGET THE CHILD IN THE CAR AGAIN.

REPORTS SHOW IT WASN'T UNTIL GRAVER AND HER HUSBAND WERE HEADED TO DINNER THAT SHE NOTICED HER DAUGHTER WAS UNRESPONSIVE IN THE BACK SEAT.

ACCORDING TO POLICE GRAVER LEFT HER FOUR MONTH OLD DAUGHTER IN HER VAN FOR ABOUT THREE AND A HALF HOURS.

TEMPERATURES AROUND THAT TIME YESTERDAY WERE IN THE UPPER 80S.

AND ACCORDING TO STATISTICS, FOR EVERY 10 MINUTES THE TEMPERATURES INSIDE THE CAR WILL RISE 19 DEGREES.

THANKFULLY GRAVER'S DAUGHTER IS EXPECTED TO BE OKAY, BUT LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT SAY CASES LIKE THIS ARE BECOMING WAY TOO COMMON.

In Pinellas County alone, we found from April of last year until June of this year there was 183 instances with children left in vehicles.

THAT'S WHY THEY'RE PASSING OUT HANGERS FOR THE INSIDE OF CARS TO REMIND PARENTS TO BE EXTRA CAREFUL THAT THEIR CHILDREN AREN'T LEFT ALONE. Return to index of stories...

"So how do you feel now you're out?"

"I feel way better."

IMAGES CAUGHT ON CELL PHONE THURSDAY EVENING SHOW ISRAELI POLICE PUNCHING AND KICKING THE TAMPA, FLORIDA NATIVE ON THE GROUND, HIS HANDS BOUND BEHIND HIS BACK.

HIS PARENTS SAY HE WAS TAKING PART-BUT NOT THROWING ROCKS-IN PROTESTS SPARKED BY THE DISCOVERY OF THE BURNED BODY OF HIS COUSIN, MOHAMED ABU KHDAIR, WIDELY BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN KILLED BY ISRAELI EXTREMISTS IN REVENGE FOR THE KIDNAPPING AND KILLING OF THREE ISRAELI TEENAGERS IN THE WEST BANK LAST MONTH.

ISRAELI POLICE CONTINUE TO INVESTIGATE TARIQ'S INVOLVEMENT IN THE PROTESTS. HE REMAINS UNDER HOUSE ARREST FOR NINE DAYS, NOT IN THE FAMILY HOME, BUT RATHER IN A RELATIVE'S HOME IN THE ADJACENT NEIGHBOURHOOD OF BAIT HANINA.

"What do you think of the decision of the court?"

"I'm not really happy.

--BUTT SOTT--

"You will pursue charges against the police who beat him?"

"Yes we will, definitely. "

THE ISRAELI JUSTICE MINISTRY HAS LAUNCHED A PROBE INTO THE INCIDENT…TARIQ'S FATHER, SALAH, HAS SCANT FAITH IN THE PROCESS.

"Are you confident that the investigation will be fair?"

"Uh, what the history is, no."

AS THAT INVESTIGATION GOES FORWARD, ISRAELI POLICE SAY THEY HAVE BROUGHT IN SEVERAL ISRAELI JEWS FOR QUESTIONING IN CONNECTION WITH THE KIDNAPPING AND MURDER OF MOHAMED ABU KHDAIR, INDICATING IT MAY WELL HAVE BEEN A POLITICALLY MOTIVATED REVENGE KILLING.MORE FUEL FOR THE FIRE.

FORECAST-WXWALL

WX RUNDOWN:

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

SEASONAL STRETCH CONTINUES

Scattered showers and thunderstorms continue this evening as the Gulf of Mexico sea breeze and outflow boundaries from storms earlier today spark further development.

Overnight low temperatures Sunday night into early Monday are expected to retreat into the mid 70s. Communities directly along the Gulfshore may only cool off into the upper 70s.

We will find ourselves in a rather typical summertime pattern for the upcoming work week. Temperatures look hot, yet seasonal for early July. Highs rather consistently are expected between 92 and 93 degrees.

With sea breeze interactions, each of the next upcoming several days bears the chance for some thunderstorms. Coverage from day to day will vary, yet the usual late afternoon and early evening timeframe looks most fruitful for activity to develop.

TROPICAL UPDATE

Weather conditions look generally quiet regarding tropical cyclones across the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. No cyclones are active, and development of any storms is not anticipated in the next three to five days.
