GOOD MORNING-2SHOT PUSH

GOOD SUNDAY MORNING, EVERYONE.

I'M ALEX DE ARMAS.

AND I'M CLIFTON FRENCH.

WE SAW SOME STORMS SATURDAY --

SO LET'S GET RIGHT TO NBC2'S METEOROLOGIST JASON DUNNING TO SEE IF YOU'LL NEED THAT UMBRELLA AGAIN TODAY. Return to index of stories...

FIRST WEATHER-WX WALL

Another day of scattered showers and storms is in store for Southwest Florida as we wrap up the holiday weekend.

The rain pattern today will be similar to Saturday. Those of us closer to the coast may see some isolated downpours earlier in the day, and then the bulk of the rain will tend to migrate inland through the afternoon.

However, with so much moisture around today, a passing shower will still be possible at any time and any place.

Expect a mix of sun and clouds through the day with some cloudy periods possible at times. Daytime highs will range from the upper 80s to low 90s for most of Southwest Florida; the lowest temperatures will be along the coast.

The storms will start to shut down by 9-10 p.m., but one or two storms may even linger a little later.

For the upcoming week, plan on seeing a classic July weather pattern featuring scattered showers and storms along with a heavy dose of sunshine.

Temperatures through the week will be hot but seasonable with highs in the low to mid 90s and overnight lows close to the mid 70s.

TROPICAL UPDATE

Now that Arthur has faded over the northern latitudes, we're left with pretty tranquil weather over the tropical Atlantic, Gulf and Caribbean. No tropical development is anticipated through the next 5 days.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA. Return to index of stories...

CANDLEWOOD SUITE FIRE-TRX ONCAM

NBC2 TRACKING BREAKING NEWS RIGHT NOW --

WE'RE LEARNING ABOUT A STRUCTURE FIRE IN LEE COUNTY AT THE CANDLEWOOD SUITES.

THIS IS NEAR BASS AND SUMMERLIN ROADS -- CLOSE TO HEALTH PARK HOSPITAL.

THERE ARE REPORTS THAT THE FIRE IS ON THE FOURTH FLOOR --

WE KNOW SEVERAL FIRE CREWS ARE HEADED TO THE SCENE --

WE HAVE A CREW HEADED THAT WAY RIGHT NOW --

WE'LL BE SURE TO BRING YOU THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS. Return to index of stories...

NAPLES HOUSE FIRE-trxVOWIPE

DEVELOPING THIS MORNING --

A NAPLES MANSION WAS STRUCK BY LIGHTNING AND BURNED TO THE GROUND --

TAKE A LOOK AT THESE PICTURES -- YOU CAN SEE DIFFERENT ROOMS OF THIS 2-MILLION-DOLLAR HOME COVERED IN SOOT.

THIS IS IN THE QUAIL WEST COMMUNITY.

WINDOWS ARE BROKEN. WALLS HAVE FALLEN DOWN. AND A GOOD PORTION OF THE HOME'S ROOF COLLAPSED IN THAT FIRE.

THIS HAPPENED SATURDAY AFTERNOON.

FIREFIGHTERS SAY LIGHTNING HIT THE ROOF -- AND SENT ELECTRICITY DOWN A METAL ROD ATTACHED TO THE PROPANE TANK ON THE OUTSIDE, CAUSING IT TO EXPLODE.

THESE PICTURES SHOW THE DESTRUCTION LEFT BEHIND, AFTER A FIRE TORE THROUGH A MILLION-DOLLAR HOME, IN AN EXCLUSIVE COMMUNITY IN NAPLES.

INVESTIGATORS TELL US -- LIGHTNING IS TO BLAME.

QUAIL WEST COMMUNITY INITIALLY HAD A HARD TIME CONTROLLING A FIRE THAT ENGULFED A MILLION DOLLAR HOME.

TAKE A LOOK AT THESE PICTURES OBTAINED BY NBC-2 -- THEY SHOW VARIOUS ROOMS INSIDE THE HOME COMPLETELY COVERED IN SOOT. WINDOWS ARE BROKEN. WALLS HAVE FALLEN DOWN. NOT TO MENTION A GOOD PORTION OF THE HOME'S ROOF COLLAPSED IN THAT FIRE.

WE'RE TOLD THE HOME -- LAST VALUED AT MORE THAN 1-POINT-6 MILLION DOLLARS -- IS A COMPLETE LOSS.

FIREFIGHTERS BELIEVE THE FIRE STARTED AFTER LIGHTNING STRUCK THE ROOF OF THE HOME AROUND 4 O'CLOCK THIS AFTERNOON. THE ENERGY FROM THE STRIKE IGNITED A PROPANE GAS LINE THAT FUELED A GRILL OUTSIDE.

ONE OF THE HOMEOWNERS WAS ABLE TO CALL 9-1-1 BEFORE ESCAPING THE BLAZE.

BUT AFTER ARRIVING HERE. IT DID TAKE FIREFIGHTERS QUITE A BIT OF TIME TO GET A GOOD HANDLE ON THE FIRE. HERE'S WHY. Return to index of stories...

Frank Giuliano -- Deputy-Chief, Bonita Springs Fire Rescue

"it was hard to contain. It was hard to put out."

ONE OF THE HOMEOWNERS CALLED 9-1-1.

LUCKILY, NO ONE WAS HURT.

ALTHOUGH THE ODDS OF LIGHTNING STRIKING A GRILL ARE VERY LOW --

FIREFIGHTERS SAY ONE WAY TO PREVENT THIS IS TO INSTALL LIGHTNING RODS ON THE TOP OF YOUR HOME.

FIREFIGHTERS TELL US THE COUPLE INSIDE WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT OUT SAFELY, ALTHOUGH AS YOU CAN IMAGINE, THEY WERE VERY SHAKEN UP BY THIS.

ALTHOUGH THE ODDS OF A LIGHTNING STRIKE IGNITING SOMETHING LIKE A GAS LINE ARE VERY LOW. FIREFIGHTERS SAY ONE WAY TO PREVENT THIS IS TO INSTALL LIGHTNING RODS ON THE TOP OF YOUR HOME. INSURING THE ENERGY FROM THE STRIKE DOES NOT TRAVEL THROUGHOUT THE HOME. Return to index of stories...

TRUCK INTO WATER-trxVOTOPS

TAKE A LOOK AT THESE PICTURES --

THIS PICK-UP TRUCK -- SOMEHOW SLIPPED INTO THE WATER, IN MATLACHA.

GET THIS -- THERE'S WAS A BABY INSIDE!

STAFF FROM THE MARINA WERE ABLE TO HELP PULL THE TRUCK OUT.

THANKFULLY, NO ONE WAS HURT Return to index of stories...

COLLIER FIRE MERGER-trxVOWIPE

ALL NEW THIS MORNING --

WE'RE UNCOVERING TWO COLLIER FIRE DISTRICTS WILL VOTE ON WHETHER TO CONTINUE A MERGER PROCESS THIS WEEK.

BIG CORKSCREW ISLAND FIRE AND NORTH NAPLES FIRE ARE IN TALKS FOR A POSSIBLE MERGER --

A PROPOSED NORTH COLLIER FIRE AND CONTROL DISTRICT.

THE STATIONS SAY IF THEY TEAM UP -- THEY'LL BE ABLE TO SAVE MONEY BY ELIMINATING DUPLICATE POSITIONS. Michael Ramsey

Lives within Big Corkscrew Fire District

39:02 39:05

if we have a wild fire there's the potential for 100 homes to go in a wink

But Big Corkscrew Island Fire and North Naples Fire are realizing their two *separate districts might not be.

It's why they're moving forward with a plan to merge the two fire districts into one -

a proposed North Collier Fire and Control District.

Asst Chief Becky Bronsdon

North Naples Fire Control and Rescue

46:08 46:13

We believe in the first 5 years alone we can save about 3.8 million dollars

Tonight the two districts presented their joint merger plan to the public for the first time.

It projects they'll be able to save money, by eliminating duplicate positions - mostly through attrition.

Many people currently in chief officer positions are nearing retirement.

Chief Rita Greenberg

Big Corkscrew Island Fire Control and Rescue

43:13 43:24

We felt that this was a very good time to work through a merger because then we wouldn't need two chief officers for each of the departments, two assistant chiefs for each of the departments and things of that nature

They say they don't plan to close any fire stations or lay off any operational firefighters -

Maybe even hiring more firefighters down the road.

The plan also doesn't include any tax increases -

But some residents worry it seems too good to be true.

James Culkar

North Naples

34:56 35:00

We've got two really different districts with two really different millage rates

From here, the draft will be reviewed by both fire district boards.

They're aiming to have the merger on the ballot this November.

In Collier County, Laura Roberts, NBC2. Return to index of stories...

We felt that this was a very good time to work through a merger because then we wouldn't need two chief officers for each of the departments, two assistant chiefs for each of the departments and things of that nature

THE BOARDS OF BOTH DISTRICTS WILL MEET THURSDAY EVENING.

WE'RE LEARNING IF THE BOARDS VOTE YES -- THEN IT WILL BE PUT ON THE NOVEMBER BALLOT.

THERE WILL ALSO BE TOWN HALL MEETINGS SCHEDULED BEFOREHAND TO PRESENT THE MERGER PLAN TO THE PUBLIC. As you are aware, North Naples Fire and Big Corkscrew Island Fire are in the midst of evaluating a possible merger. Both Districts have worked hard at analyzing the possible benefits, communicating regularly with the public for input to refine the Merger Plan. The Boards of both Districts have a joint board meeting scheduled for July 9, 2014 at 5:30pm in the Big Corkscrew District. It is anticipated that at this meeting, the Boards will vote on whether or not to continue the merger process. If the Boards vote yes, the question of merger would then be included on the November 4, 2014 General Election ballot, with several Town Hall meetings scheduled beforehand to present the Merger Plan to the residents in both Districts. For information on the merger, including the Merger Plan, go to the joint website for the Districts: www.bcnnmerger.com. Or, you can contact me directly with any questions you may have.

NSA SURVEILLANCE-trxOTS

ALL NEW THIS MORNING --

NBC2 IS UNCOVERING ORDINARY AMERICANS WERE CAUGHT UP IN A DATA SWEEP.

THE WASHIGTON POST REPORTS THE NATIONAL SECURITY AGENCY COLLECTED THE CONVERSATIONS OF NINE TIMES AS MANY ORDINARY INTERNET USERS, BOTH AMERICANS AND NON-AMERICANS.

THE POST ALSO REPORTS NEARLY HALF OF THOSE SURVEILLANCE FILES CONTAINED NAMES, EMAIL ADDRESSES OR OTHER DETAILS.

THE AGENCY ALSO INTERCEPTED THE ONLINE ACCOUNTS OF LEGALLY TARGETED FOREIGNERS. WASHINGTON - A published report says that while there was considerable intelligence collected, a National Security Agency intercept of the online accounts of legally targeted foreigners, the conversations of nine times as many ordinary Internet users were vacuumed up as well. The Washington Post reports nearly half of those surveillance files contained names, email addresses or other details that the NSA marked as belonging to U.S. citizens or residents.

The newspaper reports that the intercepted messages brought in while targeting foreigners contained material of considerable intelligence value, such as information about a secret overseas nuclear project and the identities of aggressive intruders into U.S. computer networks.

The huge trove of intercepted documents was provided to the Post by former NSA analyst Edward Snowden. Return to index of stories...

PHILLY ROWHOUSE FIRE-trxVOWIPE

NEW DETAILS THIS MORNING IN A DEADLY ROWHOUSE FIRE IN PHILADELPHIA.

WE BROUGHT YOU THIS TRAGIC STORY AS BREAKING NEWS SATURDAY MORNING.

WE'RE LEARNING THE BLAZE KILLED 4-YEAR-OLD TWIN GIRLS, A 4-YEAR-OLD BOY AND A BABY.

AT LEAST EIGHT HOUSES WERE DESTROYED.

THE FIRE BROKE OUT JUST BEFORE THREE SATURDAY MORNING.

THE TWINS MOTHER WAS IN THE HOME WITH SEVEN CHILDREN -- SHE MANAGED TO GET THREE OUT DURING THE FIRE.

THE BOYS' MOTHER WAS NOT IN THE HOUSE AT THE TIME. Officials say fire raced through a row of two-story homes in Philadelphia, killing 4-year-old twin girls, a 4-year-old boy and a baby and engulfing at least 10 houses.

The twin's mother, 41-year-old Dewen Bowah, told police she was in the home with seven children early Saturday and managed to get three out when the fire broke out. But she couldn't save her daughters, Maria and Marialla Bowah, or 1-month-old Taj Jacque and 4-year-old Patrick Sanyeah.

A THREE-ALARM FIRE IN THE OVERNIGHT HOURS TODAY KILLED FOUR YOUNG CHILDREN INSIDE THEIR PHILADELPHIA ROW HOMES.

THE FIRE BROKE OUT SHORTLY BEFORE THREE-A-M AND SPREAD QUICKLY FROM HOME TO HOME.

NEIGHBORS WOKE UP OTHER PEOPLE ON THE BLOCK AND HELPED THEM GET OUT SAFELY.

FOUR-YEAR-OLD TWIN GIRLS, A FOUR-YEAR-OLD BOY AND AN INFANT PERISHED IN THE FLAMES.

OFFICIALS SAY IT WAS A CHAOTIC SCENE -- SOME BODIES WEREN'T RECOVERED UNTIL SATURDAY.

MIAMI - Authorities say three boats collided near a Miami marina around the end of a fireworks display, killing four and injuring a dozen others in a chaotic scene that left bodies and survivors tossed overboard.

Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the crash Friday night near the Dinner Key Marina in Miami, with officers plucking several people out of the water. The boaters are believed to have been out celebrating the Fourth of July holiday.

Rescuers were alerted by one of the boaters at about 10:45 p.m. He said he'd been hit by another vessel and that his 36-foot pleasure craft was taking on water.

Authorities say eight people were initially transported to Miami hospitals. Two of them, man and a woman, later died. Relatives of a third victim found her body in the water on Saturday, and a fourth body was located later by investigators. Return to index of stories...

A SCARE IN THE AIR AT BUSH INTERCONTINENTAL AIRPORT IN HOUSTON --

TWO PLANES NEARLY COLLIDED THERE LAST WEEK.

JOEL EISENBAUM HAS MORE ON JUST HOW CLOSE THOSE PLANES ACTUALLY GOT TO EACH OTHER. Return to index of stories...

TX NEAR MISS-trxPKG

BUSH INTERCONTINENTAL AIRPORT IS BIG, ALWAYS BUSTLING. 2500 FLIGHTS MOVE IN AND OUT EVERY DAY.

BUT THURSDAY NIGHT, TWO OF THEM GOT A LITTLE TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT.

"DELTA 2344, YOU ON?"

"WE'RE WITH YOU. 2344. 6,000."

"TRAFFIC ALERT. 2:00 5 MILES AT 5800, IT'S A BOEING 777. YOU HAVE HIM IN SIGHT?"

THE TWO PLANES WERE A SINGAPORE AIRLINES 777, A BEAST THAT HAD JUST TAKEN OFF, AND A DELTA AIRLINES A320, STILL SIZABLE, COMING IN FROM SALT LAKE CITY, TRYING TO LAND.

"I CAN HEAR IN HIS VOICE A STRAIN THAT SOUNDS LIKE THEY TOOK AN ABRUPT MANEUVER."

"OKAY WELL, WE NEED TO DEVIATE."

"DO WHAT YOU NEED TO DO, SIR."

"WE'RE DESCENDING DOWN, DELTA 2344."

"SINGAPORE 777, YOU ARE NOT AUTHORIZED TO CLIMB."

"HAD THEY COLLIDED, WE'RE TALKING HUNDREDS -- HUNDREDS OF DEATHS. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A VERY LARGE AVIATION CATASTROPHE."

SO HOW CLOSE DID THESE TWO PLANES REALLY GET? WELL, ACCORDING TO AN F.A.A. SOURCE, AND THIS IS GOING TO BE LOW TECH TODAY, ABOUT A HALF-MILE APART HORIZONTALLY AND 200 FEET APART VERTICALLY. YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE A HALF-MILE VERTICALLY AND THREE MILES HORIZONTALLY. IN OTHER WORDS, THESE TWO PLANES WERE WAY TOO CLOSE.

AVIATION EXPERT JOSHUA VERDE SAYS IT APPEARS THE FAULT LIES WITH THE PILOTS OF SINGAPORE AIRLINES, ALLOWING THEIR PLANE TO CLIMB TOO QUICKLY, AND ALMOST IN TO THE DELTA FLIGHT.

THE FAA INITIALLY APPEARS TO AGREE. QUOTE: THE PILOT OF THE SINGAPORE JET DID NOT LEVEL OFF AS REQUIRED CAUSING A LOT OF REQUIRES SEPARATION. Return to index of stories...

NBC'S JENNA WOLFE SHOWS US HOW THIS COULD SAVE YOUR CHILD'S LIFE. Return to index of stories...

WATER BABIES-PKG

It's a scene any parent can imagine. Look away -- just for a second -- and in that moment.

.your child could become one of the more than 700 children who die from drowning each year.

But keep watching: this boy is only a year and half old -- and he already knows how to float.and swim.

This video is part of a public awareness campaign for a program called ISR, which teaches kids to flip on their backs, float, and swim - often before they can even walk.

SOT JoAnn: These skills should never ever ever be a substitute for adult supervision. Fences around pools, alarms on the gates-- a child has no business in the water alone or around the water.

But drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children 1 to 4 years old. And the skills these kids learn can save their lives.

NATS

We are there.for 7-month-old Emma's first lesson.

SOT JoAnn, in water: I want her to learn that the water will float her because when she assumes the correct posture, the water *will* float her.

Jenna: Mom, did that make you nervous at all when she went under?

Caroline: A little.

But, she'll be back … for 10 minutes a day, 5 days a week for 6 weeks.

JW do you include this at some point as part of their lesson plan? They will at some point have to go in with their clothes and learn how to float? / Yes

The lessons have already paid off for the Parker family. Their son Lucas fell into the deep end of their pool last year, when he was only 3.

Dad: He just popped out, went onto his back, into his float, and then climbed out of the pool

On the day of our visit, his sister Kylie is finishing the course.

Jenna how old is she? One? And she can already swim? That's so great.

SHORTEN: 12500 NATS JoAnn: Just gently let go of him. / Jenna: Really? / JoAnn: Just let go / Jenna Wow

It's 7 month old Quinn's last day of instruction, too.

SOT Jake: Her parents have a pool. We're there all the time. And, you know, god forbid somethin' happens where he just walks out back and decides to jump in. So we thought it'd be-- a good investment.

JoAnn flips him and he rolls over

And it's one that's paid off.

JW: Wow. That was incredible. That was absolutely incredible.

Jake: The instinct is to go help - like he can't do it - but he just goes and does it, and it just - it just blows your mind.

Jenna: off-cam: you haven't seen that yet, have you? / Is it all worth it?

Jenna: You made daddy cry / He's proud of you -- He's so proud of you

CLOSING LINE: Proud.with peace of mind.

Port Charlotte, FL - "Operation Wedding Gown" is Brides Across America's mission to

give away free wedding gowns to military brides. On July 8-10, 2014 Charlotte Bridal Boutique will host

a gown giveaway to make wedding dreams come true for many military brides. Men get honored for their

sacrifices, but fiancés and wives make a large sacrifice too. Often times military brides find it difficult to plan

their "fairy tale" wedding due to deployment, injury and/or economic hardship. Heidi Janson, founder says, "A

wedding is something everyone loves and to give a wedding gown to support our troops makes perfect sense!

This is our gift to them, to say thank you for their service and sacrifice."

Charlotte Bridal Boutique will host this annual event on July 8th-10th

Charlotte, FL. Brides Across America and Charlotte Bridal Boutique will roll out the red carpet for deserving

military brides and give them the opportunity to shop for a free wedding gown.

To register:

For more information on how to qualify and register for an event visit www.bridesacrossamerica.com.

In order to qualify, brides or their fiancé must be serving in the military; either currently deployed, have a future

deployment, or have been deployed within the last five years to Iraq, Afghanistan, Middle East, Korea, or

Japan. Brides must pre-register for the event and bring proper identification along with deployment papers to

be presented the day of the event. Return to index of stories...
