COLLIER FIRE MERGER-TRX-VO

WE'RE UNCOVERING TWO COLLIER FIRE DISTRICTS WILL VOTE ON WHETHER TO CONTINUE A MERGER PROCESS THIS WEEK.

BIG CORKSCREW ISLAND FIRE AND NORTH NAPLES FIRE ARE IN TALKS FOR A POSSIBLE MERGER -- INTO A PROPOSED NORTH COLLIER FIRE AND CONTROL DISTRICT.

THE STATIONS SAY IF THEY TEAM UP -- THEY'LL BE ABLE TO SAVE MONEY BY ELIMINATING SOME JOBS.

Michael Ramsey

Lives within Big Corkscrew Fire District

39:02 39:05

if we have a wild fire there's the potential for 100 homes to go in a wink

But Big Corkscrew Island Fire and North Naples Fire are realizing their two *separate districts might not be.

It's why they're moving forward with a plan to merge the two fire districts into one -

a proposed North Collier Fire and Control District.

Asst Chief Becky Bronsdon

North Naples Fire Control and Rescue

46:08 46:13

We believe in the first 5 years alone we can save about 3.8 million dollars

Tonight the two districts presented their joint merger plan to the public for the first time.

It projects they'll be able to save money, by eliminating duplicate positions - mostly through attrition.

Many people currently in chief officer positions are nearing retirement.

Chief Rita Greenberg

Big Corkscrew Island Fire Control and Rescue

43:13 43:24

We felt that this was a very good time to work through a merger because then we wouldn't need two chief officers for each of the departments, two assistant chiefs for each of the departments and things of that nature

They say they don't plan to close any fire stations or lay off any operational firefighters -

Maybe even hiring more firefighters down the road.

The plan also doesn't include any tax increases -

But some residents worry it seems too good to be true.

James Culkar

North Naples

34:56 35:00

We've got two really different districts with two really different millage rates

From here, the draft will be reviewed by both fire district boards.

They're aiming to have the merger on the ballot this November.

In Collier County, Laura Roberts, NBC2. Return to index of stories...

IF THEY VOTE YES -- THEN IT WILL BE PUT ON THE NOVEMBER BALLOT.

THERE WILL ALSO BE TOWN HALL MEETINGS SCHEDULED BEFOREHAND TO PRESENT THE PLAN TO THE PUBLIC. As you are aware, North Naples Fire and Big Corkscrew Island Fire are in the midst of evaluating a possible merger. Both Districts have worked hard at analyzing the possible benefits, communicating regularly with the public for input to refine the Merger Plan. The Boards of both Districts have a joint board meeting scheduled for July 9, 2014 at 5:30pm in the Big Corkscrew District. It is anticipated that at this meeting, the Boards will vote on whether or not to continue the merger process. If the Boards vote yes, the question of merger would then be included on the November 4, 2014 General Election ballot, with several Town Hall meetings scheduled beforehand to present the Merger Plan to the residents in both Districts. FROM JENNIFER ANNISTON… TO NICKI MINAJ.

SHE BILLED HERSELF AS A BEAUTY GURU TO THE STARS.

BUT NOW, THE GLAMOUR IS GONE FOR DAWN DALUISE -- ACCUSED IN A MURDER-FOR-HIRE PLOT IN WEST HOLLYWOOD.

"She wanted me out of the building."

GABRIEL SUAREZ IS THE MAN DEPUTIES SAY WAS her TARGET - AFTER HE OPENED A SKIN CARE SALON IN THE SAME BUILDING AS DALUISE.

IT WASN'T LONG, HE SAYS, BEFORE DALUISE STARTED TO COMPLAIN.

"I came in and I said 'can I help you?' because she was in my office. And she said 'oh good, a Mexican that speaks English' and that hurt."

HURTFUL WORDS TURNED TO POTENTIALLY DEADLY ACTIONS, ACCORDING TO DETECTIVES… WHO SAY. DALUISE PLOTTED TO KILL HER RIVAL. AND THAT SHE SOUGHT A WHITE SUPREMACIST FOR THE JOB.

"The phrase was, at that point, in essence, to find somebody to take out a double minority Mexican gay."

A TEXT TO A FRIEND, SAY PROSECUTORS, IS AT THE HEART OF THE MURDER PLOT: "I FOUND SOMEONE WHO IS GOING TO TAKE GABRIEL OUT. HIS NAME IS CHRIS GEILE AND HE'S AN EX- DETROIT LION QUARTERBACK"

"I met her at a pub in Big Bear."

BUT GEILE SAYS HE BARELY KNEW DALUISE. AND WAS NEVER ASKED TO COMMIT A CRIME.

"I want to clear my name, because it's just been-the mental anguish I've suffered is far more than any football injury I've ever had."

DALUISE TOO, WANTS TO CLEAR HER NAME, SAYING SHE'S NOT GUILTY. HER ATTORNEY TELLS CNN SHE WAS THE VICTIM OF A STALKER-- WHO POSTED FAKE CRAIGSLIST ADS CLAIMING DALUISE HAD A RAPE FANTASY.

SHE BELIEVED IT WAS HER NEW BUSINESS RIVAL, SUAREZ, BUT IT WASN'T.

A MESSY TWIST THE DEFENSE WILL USE TO MAKE ITS CASE.

"And so this is a mother that was concerned not only about her safety, but the safety of her children."

"You will see that she was venting to family, she was venting to friends. This was not a case she was trying to solicit someone to murder."

BACK AT HIS SALON, GABRIEL SUAREZ, ISN'T BUYING ANY OF IT.

HE WANTS TO SEE DALUISE PUNISHED. AND HIS PEACE OF MIND RESTORED.

"It's scary. I'm just grateful to be okay, and that she got caught."

"It's this burning sensation going on the bite marks like a jellyfish sting that just keeps penetrating deeper and deeper into the bone." "It was terrifying."

OFFICIALS SAY A 7-FOOT-LONG JUVENILE SHARK had BECOME AGITATED BY A FISHERMAN'S HOOK WHEN IT ATTACKED ROBLES -- WHO WAS SWIMMING NEAR THE MANHATTAN BEACH PIER IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA.

"It surfaced almost up to the very top of the water we saw eachother it did a sharp left turn and then it lunged right at me, didn't even hesitate."

HIS DESPERATE CRIES FOR HELP. CAUGHT ON TAPE.

ROBLES SAYS HE ACTED ON INSTINCT. FIGHTING FOR HIS LIFE.

"I grab his nose with my hand here and I tried to pull it off me fortunately the shark released itself and it took off as fast as it appeared."

THE ATTACK SENT NEARBY SWIMMERS SCRAMBLING FOR SAFETY.

WEATHER-WX WALL

!!!NEED WX ANCHOR CG!!!

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

HOT AND HUMID WITH AFTERNOON STORMS

We will find ourselves in a rather typical summertime pattern for the upcoming work week. Temperatures will be hot, yet seasonal for early July. Highs rather consistently are expected between 92 and 93 degrees.

With sea breeze interactions today, and for the next several days, you can expect scattered afternoon thunderstorms. Coverage from day to day will vary, yet the usual late afternoon and early evening time frame will be the most likely for that development. Today much of the activity will be from 3pm on through the evening and mainly aimed toward the inland areas.

TROPICAL UPDATE

Weather conditions look generally quiet regarding tropical cyclones across the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. No cyclones are active, and development of any storms is not anticipated in the next three to five days. Return to index of stories...

TEEN RUNS TO HONOR VETS-ON CAM

IT WAS A MEMORABLE FOURTH OF JULY HOLIDAY FOR 15-YEAR-OLD BREANNA MURRIN AND HER FAMILY.

THE SOUTH CAROLINA GIRL FINISHED A 113 MILE JOURNEY FROM KEY LARGO TO KEY WEST, FLORIDA ON INDEPENDENCE DAY.

MIKE DESUMMA TALKED TO BREANNA AS SHE TOOK A LOOK BACK AT HER TRIP. WHICH HELPED BRING ATTENTION TO VETERANS. Return to index of stories...

TEEN RUNS TO HONOR VETS-PKG

"When I did this run it was kind of like running continuous half marathons.

It wasn't that hard and I don't think it required much training.you just has to have mentality for it."

FOR 14 YEARS OLD --- SOME MAY SAY BREANNA MURRIN NOT ONLY HAS PERSEVERANCE BUT ALSO PHYSICAL STAMINA.

THERE'S NOT MANY PEOPLE WHO CAN SAY THEY EVER SPENT THE DAYS LEADING UP TO JULY FOURTH RUNNING DOWN THE SOUTHERNMOST TIP OF THE U-S.

FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL SOPHOMORE THE JOURNEY WOULD BEGIN AS AN IDEA FOR A FAMILY TRIP.

"We were like.why don't we just run through the Florida keys and bring the flag to honor the veterans on the 4th of July."

"We had to try to break up 100 miles into manageable pieces."

OVER SIX DAYS BREANNA'S RUN TOOK HER FROM KEY LARGO --- ALL THE WAY DOWN TO KEY WEST.

EACH DAY SHE WOULD RUN 20 MILES --- ALL THE WHILE CARRYING THE AMERICAN FLAG.

BUT WHILE SOME SITES WERE MAJESTIC TO SEE --- THE LONG TREK DOWN ROUTE 1 WAS STILL TOUGH.

"You would wake up in the morning around 4:30 ish."

"We'd drive to where we left off the day before.and then we'd run."

"Towards the last few miles of each run.my legs would kind of would be sore.and I would be like.I just want this to be over with."

"It was hard."

YET THE RUN WAS NOT ONE THAT BREANNA WOULD MAKE ALONE.

HER LITTLE SISTER DANILLE AND FATHER CHRIS WOULD BE AT HER SIDE EVERY DAY. HER MOM WOULD ALSO DRIVE AHEAD TO MAKE SURE ROADS WERE CLEAR.

"Everything kid of evolved and I think we got a lot more out of it."

AND THROUGH IT ALL.THE FAMILY ENCOUNTERED SOMETHING ELSE.

"Just running along and people honking at us and saying good job."

THE GRATITUDE OF MANY STRANGERS.

"As we were running some cars would honk and people would salute."

"When we were running there was this man who was running the opposite direction of us and he just stopped and he saluted us the entire way we were running and it was really touching."

ALL CULMINATING WITH A MOMENT --- THAT BREANNA STILL REMEMBERS.

"When we were running.it was maybe like the last 100 meters and I couldn't believe that it was right there."

THE THRILL OF THE FINISH.

"There were people taking pictures and we kind of just busted up in there and we're just like 'we're finally done.but it was amazing."

"I'm really really really proud of them."

AND LOOKING BACK THIS 14 YEAR OLD SAYS HER EXPERIENCE GAVE HER PRIDE IN ONE THING.

THE PEOPLE OF HER COUNTRY.

"A lot of people make the argument that the love for America died down, but after doing this I realized people still love America as much as they did back in the day." Return to index of stories...
