INTEREST RATES ON FEDERAL STUDENT LOANS ROSE AT THE START OF JULY.

HOW MUCH MORE WILL THOSE RISING RATES ADD TO THE DEBT BURDEN FOR FUTURE GRADS?

SHARON EPPERSON EXPLAINS. Return to index of stories...

STUDENT LOANS-TRX PKG

FOR SAMANTHA COOK, MAKING THE DECISION TO GO TO GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY WAS A BIG ONE. FINANCIALLY.

"I def had doubts about it. my parents wanted to assure me that no matter what i picked, we'd find a way to make it work."

LIKE MOST FAMILIES, SAMANTHA AND HER PARENTS ARE MAKING IT WORK BY COMBINING THEIR HOUSEHOLD SAVINGS, SCHOLARSHIPS, GRANTS -- AND STUDENT LOANS.

BUT LOANS ARE ABOUT TO BECOME MORE COSTLY FOR NEW BORROWERS.

IT'S NOT THE FIRST TIME LOAN RATES FOR STUDENTS HAVE GONE UP AND IT'S LIKELY NOT GOING TO BE THE LAST. THOUGH FEDERAL STUDENT LOAN RATES ARE FIXED FOR THE LIFE OF THE LOAN, THEY RESET EVERY JULY FIRST AND THANKS TO LEGISLATION PASSED LAST YEAR, THOSE LOAN RATES ARE NOW TIED TO THE TREASURY MARKETS, WHOSE ROCK BOTTOM RATES HAVE GONE UP.

THE INTEREST RATE ON FEDERAL STAFFORD LOANS WILL GO FROM ITS CURRENT FIXED RATE OF JUST UNDER 4 PERCENT TO OVER 4 AND A HALF PERCENT - FOR LOANS THAT ARE DISTRIBUTED BETWEEN JULY 1ST OF THIS YEAR AND JUNE 30, 2015.

FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS. THE RATE WILL RISE FROM JUST OVER 5 PERCENT TO A LITTLE OVER 6 PERCENT.

"PLUS" LOANS FOR GRADUATES AND PARENTS ARE STILL THE MOST EXPENSIVE - WITH RATES RISING TO OVER 7 PERCENT

THE INCREASE IN MONTHLY FEDERAL STUDENT LOAN PAYMENTS CAN ADD UP QUICKLY, BUT SHOULDN'T BE TOO BURDENSOME FOR MOST STUDENTS.

FOR EVERY 10,000 DOLLARS IN LOANS, NEW BORROWERS WILL PAY ABOUT 4 DOLLARS MORE A MONTH - BASED ON A 10-YEAR REPAYMENT PERIOD.

STILL, EXPERTS WARN THAT THIS IS ONLY JUST THE BEGINNING.

SO FINANCIAL ADVISORS SAY. INSTEAD OF DEALING WITH THIS DEBT AFTER GRADUATION, FIND WAYS TO MAKE YOUR EDUCATION CHEAPER WHILE YOU'RE IN SCHOOL.

"I considered transferring to the University of Pittsburgh last year because it was in-state -- It's about a third of the cost of going to GW. But I decided against it."

ATTENDING A LESS EXPENSIVE UNIVERSITY WASN'T AN OPTION THAT APPEALED TO SAMANTHA. SAMANTHA SAYS SHE'S AWARE OF THE DEBT LOAD SHE'S TAKING ON, BUT SHE'S PUT OFF WORRYING ABOUT IT FOR NOW.

FIRST WEATHER-CLIP TBA

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

HOT AND HUMID WITH AFTERNOON STORMS

We will find ourselves in a rather typical summertime pattern for the upcoming work week. Temperatures will be hot, yet seasonal for early July. Highs rather consistently are expected between 92 and 93 degrees.

With sea breeze interactions today, and for the next several days, you can expect scattered afternoon thunderstorms. Coverage from day to day will vary, yet the usual late afternoon and early evening time frame will be the most likely for that development. Today much of the activity will be from 3pm on through the evening and mainly aimed toward the inland areas.

TROPICAL UPDATE

Weather conditions look generally quiet regarding tropical cyclones across the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. No cyclones are active, and development of any storms is not anticipated in the next three to five days. Return to index of stories...

Prosecutors painted a picture of Harris as a man trapped in an unhappy marriage, with money problems and a habit of being unfaithful.

But search warrants released Friday, suggest yet another possible motive for Cooper's death. life insurance policies.

"They had two policies on Cooper. The first policy was a $2,000 policy through the Home Depot."

According to the search warrants, "Through the investigation Harris has made comments to family members regarding a life insurance policy that he has on Cooper and what they need to do in order to file for it."

"How much was the policy?"

"It was a $25,000 policy."

During Thursday's hearing. the lead investigator testified the couple had two separate life insurance policies on their son.

"There were photos of his exposed penis, his erect penis being sent, there were also photos of women's breast being sent back to him."

But it was the revelation that Harris was "sexting" with a half dozen women. sending and receiving sexually explicit photos. while his son was forgotten and dying in his car. that tore down any perception of a wholesome working dad.

"We're a long long way from having some fantasy texting situation, to the death of a child."

Harris' attorney questioned the relevance of many of the lurid, embarrassing details that emerged at the hearing. arguing they're NOT evidence his client intentionally harmed his son.

But police and prosecutors are looking to prove that Harris might have had something to gain. from the deliberate loss of his son. Return to index of stories...

WIEDERHOLT SAYS ARONIA BERRIES HAVE MORE ANTIOXIDANTS THAN ANY OTHER FRUIT, INCLUDING THE ACAI BERRY.

IT'S NOT A FRUIT YOU'D WANT TO EAT ON ITS OWN.

PEOPLE DESCRIBE IT AS HAVING AN EARTHY OR ASTRINGENT FLAVOR.

BUT SOME PEOPLE ARE USING IT TO MAKE WINE.

VINTNER'S WINERY IN BISMARCK HAS TWO ARONIA VARIETIES.

OWNER ALLAN FULLER SAYS BOTH WINES PAIR WELL WITH STEAK.

"They're both dark red wines. So, it's going to be a personal choice. If you like a little bit sweeter wine and a steak, if you like those two, that's probably going to be a home run for you. Maybe not for your neighbor. Your neighbor might like a drier wine. That's the reason why we have two."

THE CARRINGTON RESEARCH CENTER HAS SIX VARIETIES OF ARONIA BERRIES.

AND WIEDERHOLT SAYS THEY'RE EASY TO TAKE CARE OF.

"plant them nicely, not too deep, not too shallow, kind of like how they are in the pot. and really, just water them the first few weeks, maybe the first year and make sure they don't get too dry. and after that, they should take off on their own."
