FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

SCATTERED DOWNPOURS TODAY

Steering winds will be from the south-southwest again today, leading to a similar setup to what we had yesterday. There will be a few showers, even a couple of storms, along the coastline early this morning. More activity will develop as we go through the morning to midday time frame. As we go from midday toward afternoon, the rain will shift from the coast to the inland areas. Then into the evening some of the lingering shower and storm activity could come back toward the highway 41 corridor. Highs this afternoon will be held in the mid 80s to near 90 degrees with plenty of cloud cover along with the downpours.

For tomorrow, we'll see another day of scattered storms that could once again get that early start. Then for the later part of the week, there will be a few scattered afternoon storms each day. That will actually be a bit more like our typical rainy season pattern. Highs through the week will rebound into the low 90s, which is pretty seasonal for Southwest Florida.

In the tropics, there are no areas of concern at this time and development in not likely within the next 5 days. Return to index of stories...

LAST WEEK INVESTORS CELEBRATED A WALL STREET MILESTONE - THE DOW JONES INDUSTRIAL AVERAGE CLOSED AT ABOVE 17 THOUSAND.

INVESTORS ARE GETTING USED TO THESE ONE THOUSAND POINT MOVES.

IS THE DOW HEADED TO 18,000 OR HAVE WE GONE TOO FAR TOO FAST?

JIM NOLTE WITH WELLS FARGO ADVISORS IS HERE TO DISCUSS THIS STOCK MARKET MILESTONE. Return to index of stories...

WELLS FARGO-PLASMA CG

· Well, last week investors celebrated more than just the Fourth of July. 17,000 is a big number and it's fun to talk about. Realistically though it's just a number.

· There are many reasons that the US stock market has pushed steadily higher. We are experiencing a slow but steady global economic recovery. The Federal Reserve is flooding the financial system with liquidity. For a variety of reasons including historically low interest rates, investors are favoring US stocks. By historical standards, stocks are not currently overvalued.

· An interesting observation about the US stock market is the complete absence of any significant pullback over the last few years.

· Stock market corrections are defined as a 10% drop in prices from a previous high.

· Stock market corrections have been a normal occurrence throughout our history. Most market analysts agree that corrections are a necessary part of a bull market. These temporary pauses during a bull market can to prevent boom and bust cycles.

· So I think it's interesting to note that as of the close last week Wall Street has been correction free for about 1000 days.

· For the last few months stocks have pushed higher because investors felt that second quarter earnings would be up smartly after a dismal first-quarter. Investor spirits were also buoyed by assurances from the Federal Reserve that interest rates would remain low for the foreseeable future.

· The long holiday weekend gave investors a chance to step back and think about where the market would be heading over the second half of the year.

· At this point the concerns about a correction have become not if but when.

· To add to this uncertainty, this week marks the beginning of earnings season. I think Wall Street wants to see companies deliver revenue and profit growth sizable enough to warrant the stock markets continuing move upward.

· Corporate earnings for the first quarter of this year were disappointing but explainable. The economy contracted almost 3% because of harsh winter weather.

· We've seen a sharp rebound in economic activity during the second quarter. According to Thomson Reuters, analysts expect corporate earnings to grow 6.2% in the second quarter. That compares to 5.6% in the first quarter.

· Most people agree that the economy is improving and that means that investor expectations for stocks is increasing.

· The next test for this market begins this week as second-quarter earnings are announced.

· Over the last six months investors have poured money into dividend paying stocks. High dividend paying stocks such as utilities and real estate investment trusts have performed better than the general averages since the first of the year. The rally in these shares has certainly helped power the Dow Jones Industrial average to its new highs. Incidentally, all 30 of the Dow companies pay dividends.

· With bond yields at historic lows, income investors are desperate for higher yields. At this point in time dividend paying stocks fit the bill.

· Historically, a rally in dividend paying stocks signals that growth investors are nervous. That brings us back to the big concern, a correction in the stock market.

· As I mentioned earlier it's not a question if we will have a correction but when. We are long overdue.

· Corrections in a bull market or a healthy and necessary occurrence. The problem is they are always scary. My advice is simple - take advantage of pullbacks and don't panic. Return to index of stories...

FIRST WEATHER-WX ANI BOX

It's been a much sunnier scenario so far today across Southwest Florida with dry weather through the first part of the day.

Look for that to change, however, as we go through the afternoon and evening. Pockets of rain will start to develop by the early to mid afternoon, particularly for areas close to I-75 and U.S. 41.

Later in the afternoon, more storms will form and build deeper inland, and this is where the highest rain chances will be during the afternoon and evening hours.

We still could see a few storms cells drift back toward the coast by the evening and into tonight, so we'll all be fair game for rain for the balance of this Tuesday.

Coastal showers will be possible late tonight into the pre-dawn hours on Wednesday, but the highest rain chances will continue to shift deeper inland by Wednesday afternoon.

We're in store for a pretty routine summer pattern from Thursday into the upcoming weekend, featuring morning sunshine and scattered storms during the afternoon and evening.

Temperatures will top out in the low to mid 90s during the day and settling into the mid 70s at night.

In the tropics, there are no areas of concern at this time and development in not likely within the next 5 days. Return to index of stories...

NBC2 IS ON VERDICT WATCH NOW IN THE OSCAR PISTORIUS MURDER TRIAL.

THE DEFENSE RESTED ITS CASE TODAY.

NOW THAT THE TESTIMONY IS OVER, JEFF ROSSEN TAKES A LOOK AT WHAT'S NEXT. Return to index of stories...

OSCAR TRIAL-PKG

Hi there. What'd it take, four months to get here? But we are here. That's the important thing. The prosecution has rested, and today the defense rested too. All the evidence in, all the witnesses heard, so the big question now, did Oscar Pistorius and his defense team do enough to keep him out of jail for life?

FEELING THE ENORMITY OF THE MOMENT, OSCAR PISTORIUS CLENCHED HIS JAW IN COURT TODAY AS HIS DEFENSE LAWYER MADE THE BIG ANNOUNCEMENT.

ROUX: We close the case for the defense.

TESTIMONY IS OFFICIALLY OVER AND BELIEVE IT OR NOT.TEAM PISTORIUS IS ALREADY LAYING THE GROUND WORK FOR A POSSIBLE APPEAL. SAYING THE T-V CAMERAS AFFECTED THEIR DEFENSE.

ROUX: We were unable to call a number of witnesses who simply refused to testify because they say they don't want their--they're protected against television but they don't want their voices all over the world.

SO MANY WITNESSES OVER SO MANY MONTHS.TRYING TO PIECE TOGETHER WHAT HAPPENED INSIDE PISTORIUS' BATHROOM.WHEN HE SHOT AND KILLED HIS GIRLFRIEND, REEVA STEENKAMP. PISTORIUS SAYS IT WAS AN ACCIDENT.THOUGHT SHE WAS AN INTRUDER.AND IT IS HIS OWN TESTIMONY THAT COULD DECIDE THE CASE.

OSCAR PISTORIUS / APRIL 11: My lady, I didn't have time to think. I was dealt with a situation in which I had to protect Reeva and I had to protect myself.

OSCAR PISTOIRUS / APRIL 14: I did not fire at Reeva!

ROSSEN QUESTION: OK, so testimony is over. Who do you think has the upper hand here at the end?

ULRICH: Well Jeff, I still think the state has the upper hand. Their witnesses were more credible than the defense witnesses and as we've said before there's always going to come down to Oscar's testimony and he faired badly./He changed his version, he got agitated with the prosecutor, he broke down numerous times so no, not a good witness at all.

HERE'S WHAT'S NEXT:

PISTORIUS' DEFENSE LAWYER AND THE PROSECUTOR WILL PREPARE CLOSING ARGUMENTS.

THEN IT'S VERDICT WATCH. JUDGE MASIPA AND HER TWO ASSESSORS WILL DELIBERATE. WHO DECIDES? IT NEEDS TO BE A 2/3 VOTE. SO THE ASSESSORS CAN OVERRULE THE JUDGE.

PISTORIUS IS CHARGED WITH PRE-MEDITATED MURDER. POSSIBLE SENTENCE: LIFE IN PRISON.

BUT THE COURT CAN ALSO FIND PISTORIUS GUILTY OF TWO LESSER CHARGES:

- MURDER.WHICH MEANS DIDN'T PLAN IT AHEAD OF TIME. POSSIBLE SENTENCE: 15 YEARS IN PRISON.

OR CULPABLE HOMICIDE.PISTORIUS WAS ACTING IN SELF-DEFENSE, BUT WAS NEGLIGENT. POSSIBLE SENTENCE: 15 YEARS IN PRISON.

HE'S ALSO FACING SEVERAL FIREARMS CHARGES THAT COULD SEND HIM BEHIND BARS.

"Oscar Pistorius will have to wait even longer to hear his fate. The lawyers say they need more time to prepare closing arguments, and the judge is giving it to them. Closing arguments now scheduled for next month, August 7th. Jeff Rossen, NBC News, Pretoria, South Africa." Return to index of stories...

1:30 We've all been taught over the years that you have to have dairy products to get your calcium. All you really need to do is take a calcium supplement. You don't need to be getting calcium from milk or cheese or dairy products because what you're getting in addition is all of the extra fat.

BEING EDUCATED AND PAYING ATTENTION TO YOUR BODY MAY BE YOUR BEST GUIDE.

RX ROULETTE-PKG

AT THIS LAB RUN BY DRUG GIANT PFIZER, THEY'RE TESTING DRUGS THEY BOUGHT ONLINE, TRYING TO CATCH COUNTERFEITERS.

"They will use things like brick dust, they'll use wall board. sheet rock."

THE LATEST CONCERN: STORES LIKE THESE KNOWN AS FACILITATORS. THEY CLAIM TO BE LEGAL, BUT DRUG COMPANIES SAY THEY'RE EXPLOITING A LOOPHOLE.

WE WENT UNDERCOVER.

"we found these businesses all over the place here in florida, where a lot of seniors are on expensive prescription drugs, but might not be comfortable ordering them online. so the idea is that I can take a prescription like this, bring it in, and they'll fill it, and ship it to my house at a huge savings."

.DISCOUNTS AS MUCH AS 80 PERCENT.

AND PEOPLE ARE BUYING.

"people need to save money, and drug prices are too high."

WE ORDERED BRAND NAME LIPITOR FROM FOUR FACILITATORS

AND TWO TRADITIONAL PHARMACIES.

THE FACILITATORS CHARGED US, ON AVERAGE, 1.71 PER PILL.

THE PHARMACIES: MORE THAN FOUR TIMES THAT.

BUT LOOK.

THE PILLS FROM THE PHARMACIES ARE OBLONG.

THE ONES FROM THE FACILITATORS ARE ROUND.

ARE THEY FAKES?

WE SENT SAMPLES TO PFIZER'S LAB.

"according to pfizer's own reports, the oblong lipitor from the traditional pharmacies came back authentic. no surprise.

but what about the round lipitor that came in the mail?

turns out--according to pfizer's own analysis--it's authentic too!"

THAT'S RIGHT.

PFIZER MAKES TWO KINDS OF LIPITOR--

THE ROUND, OVERSEAS VERSION IS THE SAME DRUG, AT A FRACTION OF THE PRICE.

"so what's the risk to a patient, besides saving a lot of money, of ordering this way?"

"anytime you go outside of the US system, you're circumventing a system that's put in place for your safety."

THE FACILITATORS SAY THEIR PRODUCTS ARE SAFE, TOO. AND A LOT LESS EXPENSIVE.

"We save a lot of money for a lot of elderly people. I have a lot of happy customers."

BUT THE DRUG COMPANIES SAY BUYING THIS WAY IS A PRESCRIPTION FOR TROUBLE.
