THE PUSH IN ON IN COLLIER COUNTY TO KEEP SEX OFFENDERS AWAY FROM CHILDREN.

RIGHT NOW, THEY HAVE TO LIVE AT LEAST A THOUSAND FEET AWAY FROM SCHOOLS AND PARKS AND PLAYGROUNDS.

BUT A COUNTY COMMISSIONER WANTS TO MORE THAN DOUBLE DISTANCE.

FOR EXAMPLE THIS IS WHAT A THOUSAND FEET SURROUNDING LAKE PARK ELEMENTARY OFF GOODLETTE-FRANK ROAD.

THE CIRCLE DOES NOT PASS U-S 41 AND IS SOUTH OF GOLDEN GATE PARKWAY.

CHECK OUT WHAT 25-HUNDRED FEET WOULD LOOK LIKE.

NAT kids playing

DISTURBING ENOUGH KNOWING THEY'RE CLOSE BY AND ABLE TO VISIBLY SEE CHILDREN AT ONE-THOUSAND FEET, A PROPOSED ORDINANCE WOULD PLACE THOSE WHO COMMITTED DISGUSTING ACTS OUT OF SIGHT.

Commissioners Donna Fiala "When we realize there's something to be fixed, we fix it!"

COMMISSIONER DONNA FIALA - SHE'S BEHIND THE PUSH TO CREATE A LAW THAT SHE CLAIMS WILL "BETTER PROTECT THE CHILDREN OF COLLIER COUNTY."

RIGHT NOW, SEXUAL OFFENDERS AND PREDATORS HAVE TO LIVE 1,000 FEET FROM SCHOOLS, PLAYGROUNDS OR EVEN CHURCHES AND LIBRARIES WHERE DAYCARES ARE - COMMISSIONERS ARE TALKING ABOUT INCREASING THE DISTANCE TO A HALF MILE -

SOMETHING FELICIA SCATON - A TEACHER AND A MOTHER OF TWO - HOPES THEY APPROVE.

Felicia Scaton, Naples Parent "I'm concerned about my students when they're on campus, sex offenders being close by and having two kids also, it's important to know where they are."

THAT CONCERN WAS ECHOED TO COMMISSIONER FIALA WHO SAYS RESIDENTS WERE COMPLAINING ABOUT SEX OFFENDERS BEING "TOO CLUSTERED" IN FAMILY NEIGHBORHOODS - SHE WOULDN'T SAY WHICH NEIGHBORHOODS AND WHEN NBC-2 ASKED WHY, THIS IS WHAT SHE SAID:

Commissioner Donna Fiala "I don't want to frighten people. and it would frighten me if I knew they lived around me!"

WHILE PEOPLE AGREE THE PROPOSED LAW HAS GOOD INTENTIONS, IT STILL HAS SOME QUESTIONING ITS EFFECTIVENESS.

Nancy Furstner, Naples "I think it should make a difference because it is that much larger. whether it will do any good I'm not sure."

Felicia Scaton, Parent "The further they are, at least that gives you a little bit of buffer room." Return to index of stories...

COLLIER COUNTY COMMISSION AND DEP-BNR-PKG

Commissioner Georgia Hiller, Collier County-:12

Rob Moher, Conservancy of SWFL President-:44

Herschel Vinyard, DEP Secretary- 1:25

--SOT---

COMMISSIONER

12:31:08-:12

My concern is DEP has failed to do what it has an obligation to do.

DEP SECRETARY HERSCHEL VINYARD TOOK A VERBAL BEATING FROM COLLIER COUNTY COMMISSIONER GEORGIA HILLER.

---SOT---

HILLER

12:30:50

Quite frankly I view what's happening here today as nothing more than a public relations attempt on your part.

HILLER ISN'T HAPPY ABOUT THE DEP'S INACTION AGAINST THE DAN A HUGHES COMPANY.

MONTHS WENT BY BEFORE THE AGENCY EVEN NOTIFIED THE PUBLIC OF FRACKING-LIKE ACTIVITY AT THIS SITE.

FROM DAY ONE, ENVIRONMENTALISTS CALLED FOR GROUNDWATER TESTING.

---SOT---

HILLER

12:31:35

You didn't do anything.

A COUPLE WEEKS AGO THE DEP STARTED THEIR MONITORING EFFORTS.

THE AGENCY GAVE A PRELIMINARY ALL-CLEAR.

BUT CONSERVANCY OF SWFL PRESIDENT ROB MOHER SAYS THEY'RE NOT DRILLING DEEP ENOUGH.

---SOT---

ROB

12:41:07-:11

If we're not looking in the right place how are we going to find what it is we're looking for?

TUESDAY VINYARD EXPLAINED THE LATEST FALLOUT FROM HUGHES ALLEGED DRILLING DEFIANCE.

THE DEP MADE NINE DEMANDS.

ONE WAS TO SHOW UP TO THIS COUNTY COMMISSION MEETING. BUT COMPANY REPRESENTATIVES WERE ABSENT.

---SOT---

ROB

12:41:30-:35

It just says a lot about how Dan A Hughes considers these demands from DEP. They can willfully blow them off.

BUT HUGHES MAY HAVE MISUNDERSTOOD THE DEP'S REQUIREMENTS.

I REACHED OUT TO THEIR ATTORNEY DAVID BLACKMON WHO EMAILED BACK SAYING IN PART.

"The company reached out to the Commission yesterday.and was told that there was no request on the part of the Commission to have Hughes appear."

---SOT---

ROB

12:41:38-:42

It basically shows how detached they are from anything but their own profits.

THE HUGHES COMPANY HAS ONE MORE WEEK TO COMPLY WITH THE DEP'S OTHER DEMANDS.

---SOT---

VINYARD

12:25:38-:44

All of the enforcement options that we have available are on the table and that would include the revocation of any permits.

WHICH IS WHAT THE CONSERVANCY IS PUSHING FOR.

BUT COMMISSIONER HILLER IS CRITICAL OF THE DEP'S TIMING.

---SOT---

12:32:09-:14

What you're saying now comes a little late if I may say so.

BUTT TO

12:32:54

Your demands come too late.

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

It's been a much sunnier scenario so far today across Southwest Florida with dry weather through the first part of the day.

Look for that to change, however, as we go through the afternoon and evening. Pockets of rain will start to develop by the early to mid afternoon, particularly for areas close to I-75 and U.S. 41.

Later in the afternoon, more storms will form and build deeper inland, and this is where the highest rain chances will be during the afternoon and evening hours.

We still could see a few storms cells drift back toward the coast by the evening and into tonight, so we'll all be fair game for rain for the balance of this Tuesday.

Coastal showers will be possible late tonight into the pre-dawn hours on Wednesday, but the highest rain chances will continue to shift deeper inland by Wednesday afternoon.

We're in store for a pretty routine summer pattern from Thursday into the upcoming weekend, featuring morning sunshine and scattered storms during the afternoon and evening.

Temperatures will top out in the low to mid 90s during the day and settling into the mid 70s at night.

In the tropics, there are no areas of concern at this time and development in not likely within the next 5 days. Return to index of stories...

THE MILLION ORCHID PROJECT IS HAPPENING AT FAIRCHILD TROPICAL BOTANIC GARDEN.

CURRENTLY THAT'S NOT THE CASE.

AS I FOUND OUT, SPOTTING WILD ORCHIDS IS AN ADVENTURE. Return to index of stories...

MILLION ORCHID PROJECT-BNR-PKG

It's a completely remote untouched wilderness.

ORCHID LOVERS AROUND THE WORLD.

ARE DRAWN TO CORKSCREW SWAMP SANCTUARY.

So now you can see we're in the deeper part of the swamp.

HOME TO 500-YEAR OLD CYPRESS TREES.

and put that into perspective. These things were seedlings when

Columbus discovered the new world.

WHAT GROWS ON ONE SPECIFIC TREE IS WORTH THE ONE MILE WALK.

You realize this thing is monstrous, it's like this big around.

THAT'S AN EXTREMELY RARE *SUPER* GHOST ORCHID.

It's a single plant with that many blooms.

BUT WHAT IF YOU COULD SPOT ORCHIDS WITHOUT GOING INTO A SWAMP?

"If you look up you're going to see orchids."

Chad: that's the goal?

"That's the goal."

DR. CARL LEWIS LEADS A TEAM THAT'S GROWING ONE MILLION ORCHIDS.

and we extrapolated out to five years and realized a million, is a

reasonable goal.

FAIRCHILD BOTANIC GARDEN HAS A FORMULA TO REINTRODUCE NATIVE ORCHIDS TO SOUTH FLORIDA.

The seeds are so small, they're like dust - they blow in the wind.

SEEDS ARE PLACED IN STERILE BOTTLES. THEY GROW IN A MIXTURE OF CHEMICALS WITH THE CONSISTENCY OF JELL-O.

WITHIN FOUR MONTHS, LEAVES AND ROOTS DEVELOP.

By hand we detangle the roots.

THERE'S A WAITING LIST FOR LAB VOLUNTEERS.

This is our attempt at repairing the damage done over a long period of

time, by people who just never thought about what they were

doing.

SHE'S TALKING ABOUT DECADES OF POACHING. IN HER BESTSELLING BOOK: "THE ORCHID THIEF," SUSAN ORLEAN FOLLOWS AN ECCENTRIC PLANT DEALER ARRESTED FOR POACHING ORCHIDS FROM SWAMPS AND TREES.

More and more of them are orchid-less because people took so many.

DOWD WAS AT CORAL GABLES CITY HALL IN APRIL, WHEN THE MILLION ORCHID PROJECT WENT FROM LAB TO ON-LOCATION.

It's sort of like saying goodbye to your babies - grow well please

.

THEY PLACED A FEW HUNDRED OF THE PLANTS IN TREES. TOO EARLY TO TELL HOW MANY WILL SURVIVE. ORCHIDS ARE THE PICKIEST OF PLANTS. ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO POLLINATION.

It involves a very specific dance with a specific insect.

DR. LEWIS WANTS ORCHIDS GROWING IN URBAN AREAS. HE PLANS TO USE SCHOOLS TO REACH THE ONE MILLION MARK.

They'll have mini laboratories setup in their science classrooms.

HE SAYS SUCCESS IS WHEN THE ORCHIDS START SPREADING ON THEIR OWN.

We'll see how far we can take it. Maybe we will have ghost orchids in

downtown Miami, we're not sure.

UNTIL THEN.

They're doing it to keep the species going.

FOR TREASURES LIKE THIS,

It's such a fabulous orchid.

YOU 'LL HAVE TO WORK UP A SWEAT. Return to index of stories...
