TONIGHT -- NBC 2 IS TRACKING YOUR TAX DOLLARS.

ONE DAY AFTER WE EXPOSED EXPENSIVE TRAFFIC SIGNS NOT WORKING IN LEE COUNTY --

WE UNCOVER MONEY IS BEING SPENT TO FIX THEM.

YESTERDAY -- A 7-CAR PILEUP SHUT DOWN THE MIDPOINT BRIDGE FOR HOURS -- AND DRIVERS DIDN'T HAVE THE SIGNS TO WARN THEM.

TODAY -- WE LEARNED THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS ARE BEING SPENT TO FIX THOSE SIGNS

NBC2'S GEORGE SOLIS UNCOVERS WHY SOME TAX PAYERS ARE SKEPTICAL ABOUT THE WORK. Return to index of stories...

FDOT SIGNS UPDATE-PKG

"If you didn't already know these traffic alert signs don't work.

They haven't for sometime, but as we speak work is being done to

change that and with another project to revolutionize traffic flow in

Lee County."

BUT CAPE CORAL RESIDENT RENE SUAREZ BELIEVES THERE'S NOTHING TO IMPROVE ON

19:22:55 "I usually don't get angry over stuff like this but I was

literally angry.

MAINLY BECAUSE HE DIDN'T SUPPORT THE FIRST FDOT PROJECT IN THE FIRST PLACE

"It's one thing to have a difference of opinion on whether something

is necessary or not, but its a whole other thing to spend the money

and they don't even work."

NBC2 FIRST MET SUAREZ 2 YEARS AGO WHEN THESE TRAFFIC ALERT SIGNS WENT UP-

BACK THEN HE OPPOSED THE SEVEN MILLION DOLLAR PROJECT CALLING IT A

WASTE OF MONEY-

"It's a 100 percent waste of tax payer dollars as far as I'm concerned."

AS YOU CAN SEE NOT MUCH HAS CHANGED YEARS LATER.

THAT'S LARGELY IN PART WITH THE FACT THAT DURING YESTERDAY'S CRASH ON

THE MIDPOINT BRIDGE-

SUAREZ NOTICED THE SIGNS WEREN'T WORKING.

19:23:51 "They're not even functioning!"

WE DID SOME DIGGING AND UNCOVERED THE HAVEN'T BEEN OPERATIONAL SINCE

JUNE 2012- FDOT OFFICIALS SAY THERE WERE ALOT OF POWER FAILURE ISSUES.

SO WORK HAS STARTED ON FIXING IT.

19:29:07 "We're upgrading software and hardware associated with the

sign project."

A 70 THOUSAND DOLLAR ENDEAVOR- PART OF ANOTHER SEVEN MILLION DOLLAR

PROJECT FDOT OFFICIALS SAY USHERS IN THE A NEW ERA FOR TRAFFIC FLOW IN

LEE COUNTY.

19:30:09 "We're taking a look at 61 intersections we're installing

fiber optics which literally are the lines of communication between

intersections."

ALSO BE INSTALLED-- NEW CAMERAS, SENSORS, AND TRAFFIC CONTROL BOXES.

19:36:37 "Once they're in place the good effect it brings to drivers

coming through Lee County living in Lee County that continues on for

some years into the future."

BUT TAX PAYERS LIKE SUARE REMAIN SKEPTICAL UNTIL THESE PROOF THEIR

MONEY ISN'T BEING ILL SPENT

"If they're ever running then we'll see if they were ever justified

in the first place, but if they're not working then it's just money

thrown out the window."

GEORGE:

"Now a lot of that work is being done at night, a lot of factors come

into play weather being one, but transportation officials expect to be

done with project by the start of next year, GS NBC2 Return to index of stories...

BAD MANGO CROP-PKG

For many, mangoes are a natural treat.

For Doug Flowerree they're a family business.

Doug Flowerree, Owner, The Mango Factory

21:05:53 "It's the first bad year I've seen in 7 years, because every year I've seen it increase, increase, increase, increase." 21:06:00

Flowerree owns The Mango Factory on Pine Island.

He mainly sells his mangoes online.

He says this time of year he's usually shipping 30 to 40 boxes of mangoes a day. but this year with a low crop that's maturing late that number is only about 20.

Doug Flowerree, Owner, The Mango Factory

21:04:14 "As you ride around Pine Island a lot of the places are just going to be closed, they don't have any mangos this year." 21:04:20

Brittany Weiner, Reporting

21:10:08 "Flowerree says last year his mango season went about 16 weeks this year he's expecting it to be half of that." 21:10:14

Doug Flowerree, Owner, The Mango Factory

21:03:38 "This year we probably have somewhere between 30 and 40 percent crop." 21:03:42

That means out of the one thousand trees on his property only about 350 are producing mangoes.

Flowerree says heavy rain early in the season may have set back pollination.

He also says it could be a repercussion of last year's booming season.

Doug Flowerree, Owner, The Mango Factory

21:04:22 "I'm not worried about it because worry is not going to make any more mangoes." 21:04:26

Pine Island's annual Mango Mania celebration will begin in just ten days.

Flowerree says there should be plenty of mango to taste, but whether there will be enough to purchase, only time will tell.

Reporting on Pine Island, Brittany Weiner NBC 2. Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

AFTERNOON STORMS

Our typical July weather continues across southwest Florida. For the next several days we will be tracking hot and humid weather with afternoon thunderstorms each day. Overnight lows will drop to the mid 70's and daytime highs will be in the lower 90's. Again - pretty typical weather for July. As we saw today, some areas of southwest Florida will end up with very heavy rain on the order of an inch or more while other places stay dry. The scattered/isolated nature of thunderstorm development this time of year will be very evident through the weekend.

Boating weather looks pretty good through the 7 day forecast period. In general, skies will be partly cloudy and afternoon storms will tend to drift back toward the beaches toward sunset. Winds will be fairly light during the day and an afternoon sea breeze will set up. The Gulf of Mexico water temperature is at 87 degrees today.

The tropics remain quiet and no storms are expected to develop for the next 5 to 7 days. Return to index of stories...
