FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

AFTERNOON STORMS

Our typical July weather continues across southwest Florida. For the next several days we will be tracking hot and humid weather with afternoon thunderstorms each day. Overnight lows will drop to the mid 70's and daytime highs will be in the lower 90's. Again - pretty typical weather for July. As we saw today, some areas of southwest Florida will end up with very heavy rain on the order of an inch or more while other places stay dry. The scattered/isolated nature of thunderstorm development this time of year will be very evident through the weekend.

Boating weather looks pretty good through the 7 day forecast period. In general, skies will be partly cloudy and afternoon storms will tend to drift back toward the beaches toward sunset. Winds will be fairly light during the day and an afternoon sea breeze will set up. The Gulf of Mexico water temperature is at 87 degrees today.

The tropics remain quiet and no storms are expected to develop for the next 5 to 7 days. Return to index of stories...

THIS PROGRAM FOCUSES ON STUDENTS WHO REALLY NEED AN EXTRA PUSH TO GRADUATE.

IN THE CASE OF 19-YEAR OLD JESSICA NASH - SHE'S HAD TO GROW UP FAR TOO FAST. Return to index of stories...

DESTINATION GRADUATION-BNR-PKG

HOW JESSICA NASH ENDED UP ON THE CAMPUS OF FLORIDA SOUTHWESTERN STATE COLLEGE IS ANYTHING BUT TYPICAL.

I wasn't really sure if I was going to make it through high school.

So you already know the name of the new school?

ON CAMPUS, SHE MEETS UP WITH HER MENTOR FROM HIGH SCHOOL.

This is a beautiful place.

When I was a freshman I was like, really wild. I had a lot going on

in my personal life.

TO REALLY APPRECIATE HOW JESSICA GOT HERE. YOU HAVE TO GO BACK TO MAY 2007.

I remember it like it was yesterday.

HER 3-YEAR OLD BROTHER ZAHID - *BEATEN* BY HER MOM'S BOYFRIEND.

His body was shutdown, you could tell. He was moving slow, he was

talking weird.

Chad: you knew he needed to go to the hospital?

But my Mom I don't know she was scared or whatever.

THE BOYFRIEND, KESHON SCOTT, GOT THE MAXIMUM PRISON SENTENCE.

IT WAS JESSICA'S TESTIMONY THAT HELPED CONVINCE JURURS HER MOTHER WAS GUILTY OF MANSLAUGHTER.

NICOLE BREWINGTON IS IN PRISON FOR NOT DOING ENOUGH TO SAVE ZAHID'S LIFE.

If an animal can protect their child, my Mom should have

protected hers but she didn't, so I testified.

IN 7 YEARS, JESSICA'S ONLY SEEN HER MOM ONCE IN PRISON. PATRICK COMER TOOK HER THERE.

When you start looking, you kind of realize what she's had to go

through in her life and it's like geesh.

I was always a trouble student. I had a bad temper. I always wanted

to fight people.

HER ATTITUDE CHANGED WHEN COMER STARTING MENTORING HER AS A SOPHOMORE.

So often they've been told by so many people in their life. you're

worthless, you can't. We're there to tell them - yes you can.

HE HELPED HER LAND A PART-TIME JOB AND OVERCOME THE F-CAT.

I really wanted to give up. But then people like Mr. Comer were in my

ear telling me you can do it. you can do it. So I started believing

in myself. and I did it.

SHE'S NOW A GRADUATE FROM DUNBAR HIGH SCHOOL. STRAIGHT A'S AS A SENIOR. WITH SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCIAL AID, COLLEGE IS PAID FOR.

I always think of it as three P's. You've got to have patience,

you've got to have passion. and you've got to have perseverance you

gotta be a pit bull on a bone and just never ever give up on one of

these kids.

JESSICA SAYS SHE SEES HER MENTOR MORE AS A FATHER. THANKS TO HIM AND HER HISTORY, SHE KNOWS WHERE TO GO FROM HERE.

Well I want to study psychology and become a social worker.

Chad: tough field?

Jessica. Yeah. But I think I can do it. No, I know I can do it. Return to index of stories...

DESTINATION GRADUATION-TC MON

I HAVE NO DOUBT SHE CAN DO IT.

JESSICA DOESN'T REALLY KNOW HER BIOLOGICAL DAD.

HE'S IN PRISON.

SO TOO IS HER MOTHER.
