FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Afternoon storms on Thursday

A classic July weather pattern for early July will dominate the weather across Southwest Florida today. Expect another hot and humid afternoon with highs in the low 90s for cities including Fort Myers and Port Charlotte, to upper 80s at Naples and Sanibel.

With the winds taking on a bit of a southerly component, a few widely isolated showers could try to wash ashore along the coastline into the lunch hour time frame. The more widespread activity is anticipated this afternoon and evening. Just like Wednesday, some storms will have potential for heavy downpours and deadly lightning.

Overnight into Friday morning will be very muggy. Lows bottom out in the low 70s, which is near normal for this time in July. Friday morning chances for rain will be isolated and in the coastal waters. However, some will try and advance towards inland areas. Any that do quickly fizzle out, therefore not anticipating a tricky Friday morning commute.

Weekend forecast looks pretty typical. Both Saturday & Sunday will be hot with highs in the low 90s. Best chance for rain will during the afternoon hours and along the I-75 corridor.

The tropics remain quiet and no storms are expected to develop for the next 5 to 7 days. Return to index of stories...

MARKETS DIPPED LOWER ON FEARS ABOUT THE EUROPEAN BANKING SYSTEM AND A SLUGGISH ECONOMIC REPORT ON CHINA RELEASED EARLIER THIS MORNING.

FINANCIAL ADVISOR NICK CLUMSKY IS HERE.

DO YOU THINK THESE EVENTS COULD BE THE CATALYST FOR A LONG OVERDUE CORRECTION IN STOCKS AND WHAT CAN OUR VIEWERS DO TO MINIMIZE THE IMPACT OF A MARKET PULLBACK ON THEIR INVESTMENTS? Return to index of stories...

WELLS FARGO-PLASMA CG

Markets dipped lower on fears about the European Banking system and a sluggish economic report on China released earlier this morning. Nick, do you think these events could be the catalyst for a long overdue correction in stocks and what can our viewers do to minimize the impact of a market pullback on their investments?

· So to address the first part of the question about some of today's developments out of Europe and China, sure, either one of these negative headlines could be the setup for a correction in stocks. Or it could be some curve ball that comes out of left field like a geopolitical event, a natural disaster, or maybe like Jim noted on Tuesday the fact that it's now been a thousand days since we've seen a correction in stocks.

· And I think the biggest risk to the markets right now is the simple fact that we haven't seen a correction in markets now for over two and a half years. Remember, corrections a normal part of the market cycle. But I think it's also noteworthy to point out that corrections in bull markets are typically intense and short-lived. That, is the correction will usually be carried out with a series of triple-digit down days in the Dow Industrials but the recovery of these losses will also be realized relatively quickly.

· And there are several reasons why we believe the next correction will likely materialize in this same manner; that is intense but short-lived. First, the fact is that there is still a lot of cash sitting on the sidelines waiting to be invested. When the correction begins, investors aren't going to be watching the markets saying to themselves how smart they are that they are sitting in cash on the sidelines like they would during a Bear Market correction, but rather they will be looking at the next correction as a buying opportunity to increase their exposure to stocks after having missed one of the greatest run-up in stocks in the past two years.

· Second, interest rates are still at historic lows which means that savers are earning close to zero on their hard-earned dollars. This zero-interest rate environment continues to push savers into riskier asset classes like stocks with the opportunity of both higher returns and current dividends.

· Third, economic data in the United States continues to improve. Analysts are forecasting more robust growth in the 3rd and 4th quarters of this year. Additionally, earnings growth for corporate America is projected to increase in the coming quarters. And unemployment has fallen significantly, down to 6.1% versus 8.1% two years ago.

· The problem with corrections though, is that they are close to impossible to predict. As high as markets are right now, our advice is to review your portfolio to ensure your investments are both properly allocated and properly invested. Properly allocated means having the appropriate mix of stocks and bonds based on your risk tolerance and investment objective. Your allocation will be the biggest factor of the overall downside risk of your portfolio.

· Properly invested means your portfolio is well diversified so that not all the pieces within the portfolio move in the same direction when markets go up and down. Your portfolio should be diversified and include stocks across different economic sectors and capitalizations. The fixed income portion of your portfolio should also be diversified to include bonds with different maturities and issuers including corporates, treasuries, and possibly municipal bonds. Maintaining this type of diversification will provide your portfolio with a smoother ride during the next correction. Return to index of stories...

SNAKES -- CROCS AND ALL SORTS OF LIZARDS.

"It was an eye opener for me when Wilma came through here."

AND SINCE THEN -- FLORIDA FISH AND WILDLIFE HAS PUT A BIG EMPHASIS ON REQUIRING PERMIT HOLDERS TO COME UP WITH A PLAN SHOULD THESE EXOTIC ANIMALS BECOME FREE IN A MAJOR STORM.

"I'd be devastated but I'd be worried about not only their safety. But since they are not afraid of people, they would and should possible become dangerous."

F-W-C SAYS IT'S RECENTLY ADOPTED A PROACTIVE APPROACH -- GOING FROM PERMIT HOLDER TO PERMIT HOLDER -- PHYSICALLY GOING OVER THEIR DISASTER PLANS.

"In the event of a major storm like a hurricane, most of the animals like lizards and snakes will be put in these cages like this one right here, locked up and then taken to a safe location. But for the bigger wildlife like these gators, it's too dangerous and stressful on the animals to move them. So they'll stay here in a storm with the owner, behind this protective fence."

"I will not leave this residence. I do not care what kind of storm we're going to have. I have too much responsibility."

SURGICALLY REMOVING A KIDNEY WAS TRADITIONALLY A LARGE OPERATION.

BUT AS WITH MANY ASPECTS OF MEDICINE, DOCTORS HAVE BEEN ABLE TO GET THE SAME RESULTS WITH A LESS TRAUMATIC PROCEDURE.

IN TODAYS HEALTH MATTERS AMY OSHIER SHARES THE LATEST 'HANDS ON' APPROACH. Return to index of stories...

HEALTH MATTERS-PKG

WHEN UROLOGIST PAUL BRETTON DIAGNOSED A PATIENT WITH KIDNEY CANCER, IT WAS CLEAR THE DISEASED ORGAN HAD TO COME OUT.

DR. PAUL BRETTON/UROLOGIST

RUNS:

1:14 Yes, its fortunate that you have two kidneys so you can live with one.

FOR YEARS THE SURGERY WAS A TRAUMATIC UNDERTAKING. REQUIRING SURGEONS TO MAKE A FOOT LONG INCISION TO REMOVE THE KIDNEY. NOWADAYS MANY ARE TAKING A 'HANDS ON' APPROACH THAT IS MORE GENTLE ON PATIENTS.

DR. PAUL BRETTON/UROLOGIST

RUNS:

1:42 The way I do these is called hand-assisted laparoscopically. Hand assisted meaning I'm able to make a small incision, put my hand inside the abdomen to be able to assist with the removal of the kidney.

THE COMBINATION OF SMALLER INSTRUMENTS USED WITH A SPECIALLY DESIGNED PORT, GIVES DOCTORS THE ACCESS THEY NEED WHILE MAKING A SMALLER INCISION.

DR. PAUL BRETTON/UROLOGIST

RUNS:

2:20: The advantages of doing it laparoscopically vs. open is, one, the patient's blood loss is a lot less, their hospital stay is a lot less, they use less narcotics. And the return to work is significantly shorter.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

The hand-assisted approach also opened up new possibilities for kidney donation. The less traumatic surgery makes it more viable for living donors to share a kidney.

BARBARA MILLER/DIR. OF KIDNEY TRANSPLANT

RUNS:

:12 We have had a huge increase in the number of donors stepping forward now that they know that this option is available to them. Most of our donors you have to remember they're young, they are otherwise healthy and many of them are working.

THE HAND-ASSISTED APPROACH TAKES LONGER TO PERFORM BECAUSE TISSUE IS PRESERVED FOR TRANSPLANTATION. BUT TAKING THE PROCEDURE IN HAND, SHRINKS DOWNTIME BY SEVERAL WEEKS. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...
