PAUSE FOR ROBERT 1ST WEATHER

Scattered showers and storms again developed on Friday, but the coverage was lower courtesy of some Saharan dust working through the area. What storms are left will diminish this evening, as temps fall into the 70s. Expect a quiet overnight, with lows in the mid 70s.

Rain and storm chances continue heading into the weekend. We'll see plenty of morning sunshine across the area, with scattered showers and storms developing in the PM hours.

The Saharan dust will be making its exit on Saturday, so coverage of storms may again be lower than usual. Highs on Saturday will be in the low 90s.

The threat for storms will continue into Sunday. Once again, expect a dry morning with partly cloudy skies and showers and storms popping up in the PM hours. Highs on Sunday will be in the low 90s.

The typical July weather pattern looks to continue into next week. Monday & Tuesday will also feature PM showers and storms across the area, with highs in the low 90s.

There are some indications that by midweek some dry air may work into Southwest Florida. This would lower the rain and storm chances from Wednesday thru Friday, but likely not eliminate the threat. Temps will hold in the low 90s.

Tropical Update

It is very quiet in the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea and the open waters of the Atlantic as we head into the weekend. With Saharan dust in the area, it will be difficult for any tropical disturbances to develop.

"Uggh great. more work."

BUT BEGINNING THIS FALL. THE FINAL BELL WILL RING AN HOUR LATER THAN USUAL. AT 16 ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS ACROSS SOUTHWEST FLORIDA. AFTER THE SCHOOL-WIDE RESULTS OF THIS YEAR'S FCAT TESTS WERE REVEALED ON FRIDAY.

Laurie Giordano -- Parent

"It's very surprising to me that so many schools would score so low."

THE SCHOOLS ARE ON WHAT'S CALLED "THE LOW 300 LIST" --

SCHOOLS ON THAT LIST ARE REQUIRED BY THE STATE TO EXTEND CLASS TIME BY AN EXTRA HOUR.

NINE IN LEE -- SEVEN IN COLLIER

Dave Habig -- Parent

"As long as they use that extra hour to actually do something with the kids, I think it's a good idea."

THE EXTRA HOUR RAISING DEBATE AMONG PARENTS.

Donna Mutzenard -- Executive Director, Island Coast FEA

"I think it's a bad decision, I think the timing is terrible."

THE HEAD OF THE LEE COUNTY TEACHER'S UNION CALLS IT BAD TIMING.

SINCE THIS WAS THE LAST YEAR STUDENTS TOOK THE F-CAT.

Donna Mutzenard -- Executive Director, Island Coast FEA

"It affects a number of areas, and coming this late in the summer, it doesn;t give the district a whole lot of time to prepare everything."

ACCORDING TO THE NAPLES DAILY NEWS. LEE COUNTY SCHOOLS ONLY BUDGETED FOR FIVE SCHOOLS TO MAKE THE LIST -- MEANING THEY MAY HAVE TO PULL MONEY FROM SOMEWHERE ELSE --

Dave Habig -- Parent

"Considering some of the stuff they spend money on anyway, I mean, as long as it helps the kids, I think its something good."

AN EXTRA HOUR -- THAT COULD END UP COSTING EXTRA MONEY.

People in collier county care and it has made a difference

It seems the Texas-based Dan A Hughes company they've been protesting got the message -

announcing today they're pulling their permit application for a site in Golden Gate Estates just feet away from homes --

and ending other oil and natural gas exploration in the county.

Karen Dwyer

Stone crab alliance

40:53 we feel victorious and triumphant;55

40:22 40:26

its huge news it means no drilling on over 115,000 acres of land

it's not clear why Dan A Hughes is ceasing operations -- but the Company says its not leaving Collier completely.

In its statement the company said it will continue working with the Florida DEP on the Collier-Hogan well near Immokalee.

That's where the company was accused of using illegal fracking like practices.

environmental groups say their work isn't done.

Jennifer Hecker

Conservancy of Southwest Florida

33:30 we're looking to the future and seeing that we need to do things for addressing the activities already undertaken by this company:39 and also to prevent this from hopefully ever happening again:43

The Department of Environmental Protection says they will hold the company accountable for its actions at the Collier-Hogan site.

Those who have been fighting against them all along hopes that means revoking that final permit.

Dwyer

We still have hopes that dan a Hughes will have nothing to do with our watershed or our Everglades anymore they'll go back to Texas:19

IT'S TAKEN SOME TIME TO GET TO TODAY'S MAJOR DEVELOPMENT.

LAST YEAR, DAN A HUGHES RECIEVED PERMITTS TO DRILL SIX WELLS AT THREE LOCATIONS.

OF THOSE, ONLY THE COLLIER-HOGAN OIL WELL HAS BEEN DRILLED.

THEN IN APRIL, THE FLORIDA DEPARTEMENT OF ENVIROMENTAL PROTECTION FINED HUGHES 25 THOUSAND DOLLARS.

THAT WAS IN RESPONCE TO THE COMPANY USING A FRACKING LIKE METHOD.

A FEW WEEKS LATER, THE COLLIER COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS ASKED THE D-E-P TO REVOKE THE COMPANY'S COLLIER-HOGAN PERMIT.

IN MAY- HUGHES AGREED TO CEASE ALL NEW DRILLING IN FLORIDA UNTIL REGULATORS COULD TEST THE GROUNDWATER.

THEN LAST WEEK THE D-E-P STEPPED UP THE PRESSURE WITH NINE DEMANDS FOR THE COMPANY. Return to index of stories...
