GOOD MORNING-2SHOT PUSH

GOOD SATURDAY MORNING --

I'M CLIFTON FRENCH.

AND I'M STACEY DEFFENBAUGH.

AFTER SOME SHOWERS AND STORMS YESTERDAY --

LOOK'S LIKE WE'LL IN STORE FOR THE SAME TODAY --

LET'S HEAD TO NBC2'S METEOROLOGIST JASON DUNNING WITH A LOOK AT YOUR WEEKEND FORECAST. Return to index of stories...

FIRST WEATHER-WX WALL

It's vintage July weather for Southwest Florida over the weekend.

Expect plenty of sunshine for the morning through the early afternoon until the clouds darken and storms form by the mid to late afternoon.

Plan on the possibility of intense lightning, torrential rain, and gusty winds with today's storms, and now that our steering winds are more easterly, the stormy weather will tend to stay closer to the coast through the weekend.

Our temperatures will be quite characteristic of what we expect for this time of year; daytime highs will reach the low to mid 90s with overnight lows in the mid to upper 70s.

Humidity levels will stay high through the weekend as well, putting heat index values near 100 degrees.

On the waterways this weekend, winds will be southeasterly before the sea breeze sets up with winds from 5-15 mph. The water temperature in the Gulf at Fort Myers Beach is at 87 degrees. Our inland inland waters will stay at a light to moderate chop.

As we head into the upcoming week, we'll continue with our afternoon storm pattern through Tuesday, but some slightly drier air combined with an onshore flow should help to cut down our rain chances a little by mid week.

In the tropics, there are currently no areas of concern, and tropical development is not anticipated through the next five days.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA. Return to index of stories...

NBC2'S LAURA ROBERTS FINDS OUT WHAT THIS MEANS FOR THE FUTURE OF DRILLING IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA. Return to index of stories...

DAN A HUGHES WITHDRAW-trxPKG

For a year --

environmentalists and collier county residents have been making noise about oil drilling --

hoping somebody would hear them.

Karen Dwyer

Stone Crab Alliance

41:24 41:26

People in collier county care and it has made a difference

It seems the Texas-based Dan A Hughes company they've been protesting got the message -

announcing today they're pulling their permit application for a site in Golden Gate Estates just feet away from homes --

and ending other oil and natural gas exploration in the county.

Karen Dwyer

Stone crab alliance

40:53 we feel victorious and triumphant;55

40:22 40:26

its huge news it means no drilling on over 115,000 acres of land

it's not clear why Dan A Hughes is ceasing operations -- but the Company says its not leaving Collier completely.

In its statement the company said it will continue working with the Florida DEP on the Collier-Hogan well near Immokalee.

That's where the company was accused of using illegal fracking like practices.

environmental groups say their work isn't done.

Jennifer Hecker

Conservancy of Southwest Florida

33:30 we're looking to the future and seeing that we need to do things for addressing the activities already undertaken by this company:39 and also to prevent this from hopefully ever happening again:43

The Department of Environmental Protection says they will hold the company accountable for its actions at the Collier-Hogan site.

Those who have been fighting against them all along hopes that means revoking that final permit.

Dwyer

42:12

We still have hopes that dan a Hughes will have nothing to do with our watershed or our Everglades anymore they'll go back to Texas:19

IT'S BEEN A WHIRLWIND TO GET TO THIS POINT --

SO WE MADE A TIMELINE TO LET YOU KNOW HOW WE GOT HERE --

LAST YEAR, DAN A HUGHES RECIEVED PERMITTS TO DRILL SIX WELLS AT THREE LOCATIONS.

OF THOSE, ONLY THE COLLIER-HOGAN OIL WELL HAS BEEN DRILLED.

IN APRIL, THE FLORIDA DEPARTEMENT OF ENVIROMENTAL PROTECTION FINED HUGHES 25-THOUSAND-DOLLARS.

THAT WAS IN RESPONCE TO THE COMPANY USING A FRACKING LIKE METHOD.

A FEW WEEKS LATER, THE COLLIER COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS ASKED THE D-E-P TO REVOKE THE COMPANY'S COLLIER-HOGAN PERMIT.

IN MAY- HUGHES AGREED TO CEASE ALL NEW DRILLING IN FLORIDA UNTIL REGULATORS COULD TEST THE GROUNDWATER.

THEN -- LAST WEEK -- THE D-E-P STEPPED UP THE PRESSURE WITH NINE DEMANDS FOR THE COMPANY. Return to index of stories...

CUSTOM 3D EAR BUDS-2SH, SS(2)

DO YOU HAVE PROBLEMS WITH YOUR HEADPHONES OR EARBUDS?

WE DID SOME DIGGING AND FOUND A NEW LINE OF CUSTOM MADE 3-D PRINTED EARBUDS -

TAKE A LOOK -

THEY'RE CALLED NORMALS, AND A COMPANY IN NEW YORK MAKES THEM.

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED, YOU DOWNLOAD A FREE APP ON YOUR PHONE, AND THEN USE IT TO TAKE A FEW PICTURES OF YOUR EARS.

THEN YOUR EARBUDS WILL BE A CUSTOMIZED FIT.

THERE'S ALSO DIFFERENT COLORS TO CHOOSE FROM.

THEY ARE NOT CHEAP, THEY WILL SET YOU BACK ABOUT 200 BUCKS.

That's why we like the idea of "Normals," a new and relatively affordable line of 3D-printed earbuds by New York City-based company Normal Ears.

A pair of Normals costs $199 , but the fitting is free: You simply download a free app from the Google Play store or Apple App Store and use it to take a few photos of your ears. Preordered Normals wills ship Aug. 9, but after that, the company says U.S. customers will receive their earbuds within 48 hours of submitting their orders via the app.

To use the app, you'll need a quarter as well as a smartphone, so the camera can get a size reference when measuring your ear. First, make sure your smartphone's volume is on, so you can hear the timed instructions. Then, to take a picture of your left ear, hold the quarter against your face just in front of your ear with your right hand. With your left, hold your smartphone with the rear-facing camera toward your face. You need to get a picture that includes the quarter, the entire shape of your ear, and your nose and profile.

With your ear and profile captured, you can customize the size and color of almost every part of the earbud design before sending it off to be built. Normal Ears uses 3D imaging to create a model of your ear and then 3D-print a custom sleeve in ABS plastic that fits your ear perfectly. Return to index of stories...

FIRST WEATHER-WX WALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Return to index of stories...

THE MESSAGE COMES DAYS AFTER THE TOP TWO LEADERS WERE FIRED AT LEE COUNTY DOMESTIC ANIMAL SERVICES.

THIS WEEK NBC-2 FOUND OUT COMMISSIONER CECIL PENDERGRASS SENT OUT A LETTER OF HIS OWN.

NBC-2'S BRITTANY WIENER HAS THE STORY. Return to index of stories...

LARGE ANIMAL ABUSE CASES ALWAYS DRAW MEDIA ATTENTION.

Commissioner Pendergrass, Lee County

20:16:14 "Just make sure that there's no perception that things are not being put out." 20:16:18

LEE COUNTY COMMISSION CECIL PENDERGRASS WANTS TO MAKE SURE THE COMMUNITY IS EDUCATED ON EACH CASE.

Commissioner Pendergrass, Lee County

20:15:10 "If I receive information I will make sure it gets out, if I do think it's needed to get out to the community to make the community aware for educational purposes." 20:15:15

IN A LETTER SENT THURSDAY -- D-A-S FIELD OPERATIONS LT. TONY BACKHURST SAYS IN MANY RECENT INCIDENTS COUNTY MANAGER ROGER DEJARLAIS AND HIS STAFF HAVE PREVENTED INFORMATION FROM GETTING TO THE PUBLIC REGARDING SERIOUS CRIMINAL CASES.

SOME CASES HE SAID NEEDED PUBLIC ASSISTANCE.

COMMISSIONER PENDERGRASS IS NOW REQUESTING ALL INFORMATION ON ANIMAL ABUSE AND HOARDING CASES.

HE SAYS AS LONG AS IT DOESN'T INTERFERE WITH AN INVESTIGATION HE WILL RELEASE CASE INFORMATION TO THE PUBLIC REGARDLESS OF WHETHER DEJARLAIS WANTS IT RELEASED OR NOT.

20:12:41 "Do you not trust the county manager?/No, I do trust the county manager. And the county managers actions totally appropriate under the charter. The county manager handles all the employee issue here within the county, and he does a good job of that. My goal is to make the citizens aware the animals services are provided good services." 10:12:58

DEJATLAIS RESPONDED WITH A STATEMENT SAYING: "ANY COUNTY COMMISSIONER HAS THE ABSOLUTE RIGHT TO ASK FOR ANY INFORMATION IN THE ORGANIZATION AND BE PROVIDED WITH IT."

FOLLOWING LETTERS THEY SENT TO COUNTY COMMISSIONERS COMPLAINING OF A HOSTILE WORK ENVIRONMENT, AND A "MEDIA BAN."
