Today's Weather Story

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

SCATTERED PM STORMS TODAY

Monday morning starts with mainly clear skies and mild temperatures. We'll head into the low to mid 90s for highs this afternoon, with heat index values feeling about 5 degrees warmer than our temperatures. Winds today will be from the south-southeast this morning, turning onshore by late morning toward midday. After starting with mainly clear skies, clouds will build through the midday and early afternoon. We could even see a stray downpour wash ashore around the midday time frame. Then there will be scattered showers and storms through the afternoon hours. The I-75 and highway 41 corridors will be right in the path of the afternoon storms.

The overall weather pattern in Southwest Florida will change for the next few days. A cold front will move through into the southeastern United States Tuesday through Thursday. That will influence our weather by shifting the winds to become south and southwesterly. With those onshore winds, we stand the chance for some rain or storms to move onshore in the morning hours, especially on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

TROPICAL UPDATE

There continues to be no tropical cyclones active in the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. No tropical cyclone development is anticipated in the next three to five days. Return to index of stories...

Day Planner

CELLPHONE VIDEO CAPTURES - THEIR ARRIVAL ON THE KIND OF ISLAND YOU DON'T USUALLY VISIT.

Midway is not an island that has hotels and things. it's just a diversion airport.

THE MOMENTS BEFORE TOUCH DOWN - TERRIFYING UNITED AIRLINES PASSENGERS.

We were all thinking of the people at home and our own little ones we had with us, we had a family next to us with a 3 year old and real tiny baby.

MECHANICAL ISSUES DELAYED UNITED AIRLINES FLIGHT 201 FROM THE START. AFTER THREE AND A HALF HOURS, IT WAS CLEARED FOR TAKE OFF.

THE PLANE LEFT HONOLULU AND WAS HEADED TO GUAM, BUT THREE HOURS INTO THE FLIGHT, OVER THE PACIFIC OCEAN, THE PILOT WAS SUDDENLY FORCED TO REROUTE TO A REMOTE ISLAND BECAUSE OF A STRONG ELECTRICAL ODOR.

Anytime there's anything going on on an aircraft that's abnormal with smells, with smoke, anything of that nature particularly when you're halfway across the ocean, it's a great deal of concern and it has to be responded to immediately.

IN ORDER TO MAKE A LAST MINUTE LANDING ON THE ISLAND AVIATION EXPERTS SAY THE PILOT WOULD HAVE HAD TO DUMP FUEL BEFORE REACHING THE RUNWAY.

PASSENGERS BECAME MORE ALARMED APPROACHING THE ISLAND BECAUSE OF TURBULENCE.

I think after that 40 foot drop it got really silent in the cabin. People prayed. We all prayed. I prayed. There's nothing wrong with that

MIDWAY ISLAND - KNOWN FOR THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY DURING WORLD WAR TWO - WAS ONCE THE HOME OF A NAVAL AIR STATION.
