NAT pool of mosquitoes

YOU ALMOST FEEL ITCHY JUST LOOKING AT THESE THINGS.

THEY'RE ANNOYING, YES. AND THEY'RE JUST ABOUT EVERYWHERE YOU GO - ESPECIALLY RIGHT NOW.

Shelly Redovan, Lee Mosquito Control "Normally we would have already had our planes out in June with a lot of activity going on. it kind of got postponed until July."

SHELLY RODAVAN IS TALKING ABOUT LEE MOSQUITO CONTROL'S SPRAYING EFFORTS -

NAT "These are the areas we did Saturday and Sunday."

RECENT HEAVY RAINFALL HAS CAUSED MORE STANDING WATER TO BUILD UP ACROSS THE REGION. CREATING MORE BREEDING GROUND FOR THESE HYPER BUGS.

THE EXACT REASON LEE COUNTY IS RAMPING UP CONTROL SO RESIDENTS LIKE SHARON MUDD DON'T HAVE TO FEEL THE BUMPY BITES SO MUCH.

Sharon Mudd, Cape Coral "We're very fortunate to live in Cape Coral because they spray so well for mosquitoes here."

RESEARCHERS WERE ANALYZING MOSQUITOES IN A LAB TODAY FROM COLLECTIONS OF THE BUGS FROM DIFFERENT AREAS OF LEE COUNTY - IF THEY FIND MORE IN LEHIGH ACRES THAN FORT MYERS, THEY'LL SPRAY MORE IN LEHIGH ACRES. IT'S AS SIMPLE AS THAT.

BUT THIS YEAR, THERE'S AN ENTIRELY NEW PROBLEM THAT'S NOT SUCH AN EASY FIX.

Shelly Redovan, Lee Mosquito Control "We knew sooner or later that chickungunya was going to find its way into the Carribean and it did this summer. there's been over 300,000 cases."

THE MOSQUITO THAT CARRIES CHICKUNGUNYA AND DENGUE IS A DOMESTIC BUG - IT HANGS AROUND POOLS AND PUDDLES IN YARDS, MAKING IT HARDER FOR RESEARCHERS TO TRACK.

Redovan "We've been kind of focusing on that because it's new to the area. we haven't had to deal with that type of problem before that much."

Jerry Mudd, Cape Coral "Most of us who live in Florida all year round don't seem to get these types of diseases."

THAT'S NOT THE CASE YET, BUT IT DOES POSE A PUBLIC HEALTH THREAT - WHAT RESEARCHERS ARE DOING NOW IS MAKING SURE OUR LOCAL MOSQUITOES AREN'T GETTING INFECTED WITH THE DISEASES FROM HUMANS WHO HAVE RECENTLY BROUGHT IT HERE FROM OVERSEAS VISITS.

Mark J. Castellano/President of the Teachers Association

03:58-4:07

Schools are not failing, teachers are not failing, kids are not failing. Our political system is failing us in terms of education

MARK J. CASTELLANO AND OTHER LONG-TIME TEACHERS NEVER SAW THIS COMING.

51:46-52

I think the district expected five ummm were a little disappointed with none. Very disappointed with 9.

FOR the SECOND YEAR IN A ROW SCHOOLS IN LEE AND COLLIER COUNTIES WILL HAVE TO ADD EXTRA TIME TO THEIR DAYS.

CASTELLANO DOESN'T BELIEVE IT DOES ANYTHING FOR CHILDREN'S TEST SCORES -- AND ACTUALLY TAKES AWAY FROM THE DISTRICT.

54:22-29

All it really is accomplishing for he district is a loss -/ an expenditure of revenues the state has not provided

HE'S SEEN THIS BEFORE AND SAYS MILLIONS WILL HAVE TO BE BUDGETED FOR THE EXTRA HOUR.

10:54-11:01

We've already inserted a lot of money in the kids, a little bit more to me, if it is what makes it work, is a good thing

THAT MONEY -- WILL NOT COME FROM THE STATE BUT -- FUNDS THE DISTRICT WILL HAVE TO COME UP WITH.

THIS PARENT -- SAYS IT'S WORTH IT.

Harold Harriman/Parent

10:37-44

I have sympathy for the teachers but if they need more time to learn I think it's a good thing

IT'S NOT CLEAR HOW THE EXTRA TIME WILL BE SPENT.

BUT CASTELLANO CLAIMS IT'S THE STANDARDIZED TESTS THAT ARE FAILING THE STUDENTS.

55:09-18

It's really the question of how much value is there in this system and is it really a reflection of the work that's being done in the schools Return to index of stories...

"It can be an early indicator. an indicator that tells the eye doctor, for example, that a person should go on and get a more - a more distinct workup, neuropsychological testing, memory testing, MRIs, etc."

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

ONSHORE FLOW IMPACTS RAIN CHANCES

Widespread showers and thunderstorms will continue rumbling across the interior of the state this evening, though an isolated downpour or storm will still remain possible along the US 41 corridor.

Thanks to a weather feature in the Southeastern United States this week, our winds will hail from the west and southwest late tonight and through Tuesday. This setup is called "onshore flow", and when it happens it alters when we can expect rain in Southwest Florida.

On Tuesday morning, thanks to winds coming from the Gulf of Mexico, we'll have the chance for seeing showers and even a few thunderstorms early in the day. Though many of these areas of rain tend to weaken once they get on land, you'll want to keep this in mind if you're outside early on Tuesday.

Our onshore wind flow pattern will stay in play through Thursday. This means we stand the chance for some rain in the morning each of the next upcoming days, with only isolated chances in the afternoon. In terms of coverage, our afternoon rain chances will be most abundant for communities along and east of I-75.

Temperatures this week look warm and seasonal. Highs are expected in the low 90s through Thursday before jumping back up closer to the mid 90s by Friday.

TROPICAL UPDATE

No tropical cyclones are active in the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea or Gulf of Mexico. No storm development is expected in the next three to five days. Return to index of stories...
