FIRST WEATHER-WX

SCATTERED SHOWERS AND STORMS

Our winds will come from the west and southwest Tuesday, even during the morning hours. This setup is called "onshore flow" and when it happens it changes the weather pattern and when we expect rain in Southwest Florida.

This morning, thanks to winds coming from the Gulf of Mexico, we'll have the chance for seeing showers and even a few thunderstorms as we finish the morning and through the midday time frame. Downpours in the Gulf of Mexico will work their way onshore. Though many of these areas of rain will weaken once they get on land, you'll want to keep this in mind if you're outside later this morning.

Our onshore wind flow pattern will stay in play through Thursday. This means we stand the chance for some rain in the morning each of the next few days, with only isolated chances in the afternoon. In terms of coverage, our afternoon rain chances will be most abundant for communities along and east of I-75.

Temperatures this week look seasonally warm. Highs are expected in the low 90s through Thursday. Then they will go back up closer to the mid 90s by Friday.

TROPICAL UPDATE

No tropical cyclones are active in the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea or Gulf of Mexico. No storm development is expected in the next three to five days. Return to index of stories...

UNLESS CONGRESS EXTENDS FUNDING TO THE FEDERAL HIGHWAY TRUST FUND BY AUGUST FIRST. THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION SAYS IT WILL HAVE TO PULL BACK ON FUNDING FOR STATE HIGHWAY AND BRIDGE PROJECTS.

AS ANDREW SPENCER REPORTS. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA WILL GIVE A SPEECH LATER TODAY PUSHING CONGRESS TO CLOSE THAT FUNDING GAP. Return to index of stories...

OBAMA PRESSING CONGRESS-PKG

THE MULTI-BILLION-DOLLAR TRUST WHICH HELPS FUNDS STATE TRANSPORTATION PROJECTS, SUCH AS ROAD AND BRIDGE REPAIRS, IS AGAIN RUNNING OUT OF MONEY.

.AND THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION SAYS, AS SOON AS AUGUST FIRST, A LAPSE IN FUNDING COULD ADVERSELY AFFECT ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION PROJECTS.

"This week, Congress will consider a solution to avoid that scenario, and the president will continue to urge Republican lawmakers to not block it."

LAWMAKERS AREN'T JUST SITTING IDLE. THE HOUSE AND THE SENATE ARE HAMMERING OUT THE DETAILS OF A TEMPORARY EXTENSION. THE QUESTION IS WHETHER THAT DEAL GETS DONE BEFORE THE END OF THE MONTH.

"There'll be thousands of projects across this country, hundreds of thousands of jobs will be in jeopardy if we don't do this."

DISCUSSING THEIR VERSION OF THE BILL, MONDAY EVENING, THE HOUSE RULES COMMITTEE HOPED TO PUT SOMETHING FORWARD THAT WOULD EASILY PASS BOTH THE HOUSE AND THE SENATE.

"The bill before us will provide enough funding to get us through May 31, 2015. This legislation is the only package with all provisions having a proven history of getting big bipartisan votes in both the House and the Senate."

ACCORDING TO TRIPLE-A, BADLY-MAINTAINED ROADS FORCE AMERICANS -- ON AVERAGE -- TO SPEND MORE THAN 300-DOLLARS A YEAR ON REPAIRS AND MAINTENANCE. IN SOME CITIES, IT'S MORE THAN 800.

BRACE YOURSELF. THE PRICE OF GAS COULD GO UP. THE MAIN SOURCE OF MONEY FOR THE FEDERAL HIGHWAY TRUST FUND IS THE FEDERAL GAS TAX -- ALTHOUGH CONGRESS HASN'T RAISED THAT IN 20 YEARS.

I'M ANDREW SPENCER, REPORTING Return to index of stories...

"Sitting there after five minutes, I'm like this 'aint right, this 'aint happening. So as I turned around to buzz out, there 'aint no buzzer. No buzzer, no intercom, just a room."

THAT ROOM - DEEP INSIDE DIVISION 9 OF THE COOK COUNTY JAIL'S "SPECIAL INCARCERATION UNIT". RESERVED FOR THE MOST DANGEROUS INMATES.

THE 8X8 VISITING ROOM HAS CONCRETE WALLS, NO WINDOWS AND A STEEL DOOR THAT LOCKED BEHIND MR. POLK SECONDS AFTER HE ENTERED.

THE ROOM IS USED ONLY ONCE A WEEK AND WAS UNDER REPAIR. NO ONE KNEW HE WAS THERE.

"The room is basically an 8x8 concrete room with two steel sears or a bench and that's it. No water. No toilet. No nothing. It's a visiting room."

AS MINUTES TURNED TO HOURS. POLK SAYS HIS CRIES FOR HELP WENT UNANSWERED.

"He could hear voices, the guards on the other side of the door. Presumptively, if he could hear them, they could hear him pounding and kicking on the door and no one came to help."

THE JAIL'S DIRECTOR ADMITS MISTAKES WERE MADE BUT SAYS THERE SIMPLY ARE NOT ENOUGH GUARDS TO KEEP TRACK OF EVERYONE.

"In a perfect world we would know every single person that enters the jail, whether they were visitors, inmates, workers and staff. and every single person that's left. That didn't happen that night."

SUMMER IDENTITY THEFT-ON CAM

BETWEEN TRAVEL, VACATIONS, AND SENDING THE KIDS OFF TO CAMP, SUMMER CAN BE A HOT TIME FOR IDENTITY THEFT.

IN TODAY'S CONSUMER WATCH. KARIN CAIFA LOOKS AT SOME RISKY SITUATIONS TO AVOID. Return to index of stories...

SUMMER IDENTITY THEFT-PKG

YOU PROBABLY DON'T WANT TO THINK ABOUT IDENTITY THEFT ON VACATION. BUTCERTAIN ASPECTS OF SUMMER FUN CAN LEAVE ANYONE IN THE FAMILY SUSCEPTIBLE TO SCAMS.

CONSUMER REPORTS RECOMMENDS TRAVELING WITH A MINIMUM NUMBER OF DOCUMENTS AND OTHER ITEMS WITH SENSITIVE PERSONAL INFORMATION. FOR EXAMPLE, LEAVE SOCIAL SECURITY CARDS AND EXTRA CREDIT CARDS AT HOME.

ALSO MAKE BANK AND CREDIT CARD COMPANIES AWARE OF TRAVEL PLANS, SO THEY CAN BETTER MONITOR FRAUD.

THE FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION WARNS HOTEL GUESTS OF CERTAIN COMMON SCAMS, INCLUDING CALLS PURPORTEDLY FROM THE FRONT DESK SEEKING VERIFICATION OF A CREDIT CARD NUMBER. WHEN A HOTEL REALLY HAS AN ISSUE WITH A CREDIT CARD, THEY'LL ASK GUESTS TO COME TO THE DESK TO DEAL WITH IT FACE-TO-FACE.

ANOTHER PITFALL, FAKE WI-FI NETWORKS. CONFIRM THE HOTEL'S AUTHORIZED NETWORK AT CHECK-IN TO AVOID HANDING INFORMATION OVER TO SCAMMERS.

AND IDENTITY THEFT ISN'T LIMITED TO ADULTS. CHILDREN'S SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBERS CAN BE A TARGET BECAUSE THEY PROVIDE A CLEAN SLATE FOR SCAMMERS TO OPEN CREDIT ACCOUNTS - AND BECAUSE MOST PARENTS DON'T SUSPECT YOUNG ONES COULD BE VICTIMS OF FRAUD.

WHEN A CHILD ATTENDS SUMMER CAMP OR ANOTHER SUMMER PROGRAM, THE F-T-C URGES PARENTS TO FIND OUT WHERE PERSONAL INFORMATION IS STORED, HOW THOSE RECORDS ARE USED, AND WHO HAS ACCESS.

FOR CONSUMER WATCH, I'M KARIN CAIFA. Return to index of stories...

WEATHER-WX WALL

!!!NEED WX ANCHOR CG!!!

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

MELANOMA CONTINUES TO BE A MAJOR CONCERN IN CANCER CARE.

THE NUMBER OF CASES IN THE U-S HAS BEEN RISING FOR THREE DECADES.

BUT IN TODAYS HEALTH MATTERS. AMY OSHIER REPORTS THERE ARE SEVERAL BRIGHT SPOTS. Return to index of stories...

HEALTH MATTERS-PKG

PKG:

THE BRIGHT SPOT WHEN IT COMES TO MELANOMA IS THE SUCCESS IN TREATING IT, PROVIDED IT'S CAUGHT EARLY.

DR. FRANK RODRIGUEZ/ONCOLOGIST

RUNS:

16:37 If melanoma gets picked up early usually a surgery is all you need.

THE MOST DEADLY FORM OF SKIN CANCER, THE RISK OF DYING FROM IT IS 70% LOWER IN PEOPLE WHO HAVE REGULAR DOCTOR VISITS. THE LOGIC BEING, THEY ARE MORE LIKELY TO PICK UP ON AN IRREGULAR MOLE WHEN IT IS MOST TREATABLE.

DR. FRANK RODRIGUEZ/ONCOLOGIST

RUNS:

20:51 Once a diagnosis is made either a general surgeon or sometimes a dermatologist needs to cut it out. And they need to cut it out with a healthy line of tissue around it to make sure that theres nothing left behind.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

General recommendations call for a biopsy of the sentinel node. It's the most likely lymph node which collects what drains from that particular part of skin. The hope is, the cancer hasn't left it's original site.

DR. FRANK RODRIGUEZ/ONCOLOGIST

RUNS:

19:58 It can spread to either other parts of the skin, it can spread to the lymph nodes but it can also go to the lungs, it can go to the brain. Melanoma's one of those tumors that can progress very, very rapidly.

A HOST OF NEW DRUGS AND TREATMENTS ARE EXTENDING THE LIVES OF ADVANCED MELANOMA PATIENTS. INCLUDING A DRUG CALLED YERVOY THAT IMPROVES THE BODY'S ABILITY TO TARGET AND ATTACK MELANOMA CELLS.

DR. FRANK RODRIGUEZ/ONCOLOGIST

RUNS:

2:32 It really gets the immune system going and once that immune system is fired up like that, it can find any circulating melanoma cells and try to destroy them.

STILL DEADLY AND DANGEROUS, EARLY DETECTION AND BETTER TREATMENTS ARE CREATING A BRIGHTER FUTURE FOR PEOPLE WITH MELANOMA. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...
