FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

SCATTERED SHOWERS AND STORMS

Our winds will come from the west and southwest Tuesday, even during the morning hours. This setup is called "onshore flow" and when it happens it changes the weather pattern and when we expect rain in Southwest Florida.

This morning, thanks to winds coming from the Gulf of Mexico, we'll have the chance for seeing showers and even a few thunderstorms as we finish the morning and through the midday time frame. Downpours in the Gulf of Mexico will work their way onshore. Though many of these areas of rain will weaken once they get on land, you'll want to keep this in mind if you're outside later this morning.

Our onshore wind flow pattern will stay in play through Thursday. This means we stand the chance for some rain in the morning each of the next few days, with only isolated chances in the afternoon. In terms of coverage, our afternoon rain chances will be most abundant for communities along and east of I-75.

Temperatures this week look seasonally warm. Highs are expected in the low 90s through Thursday. Then they will go back up closer to the mid 90s by Friday.

TROPICAL UPDATE

No tropical cyclones are active in the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea or Gulf of Mexico. No storm development is expected in the next three to five days. Return to index of stories...

DESPITE NEGATIVE NEWS AND HEADLINES, THE GLOBAL ECONOMY IS IN JEOPARDY, THE MARKET CONTINUES TO PUSH HIGHER.

IT'S NOT SURPRISING, THE MOST POPULAR INVESTMENTS HAVE BEEN THOSE THAT PROMISE THE POTENTIAL FOR GROWTH WHILE ELIMINATING THE RISK OF A FALLING MARKET.

FINANCIAL ADVISOR JIM NOLTE IS HERE.

ARE THERE INVESTMENTS AVAILABLE THAT CAN DELIVER STOCK MARKET LIKE RETURNS WITHOUT THE RISKS? Return to index of stories...

WELLS FARGO-PLASMA CG

· Wall Street does have a knack of providing investment products to investors needs and concerns.

· Investors are always searching for that "perfect investment" that provides big returns without investment risk.

· The best advice I have along those lines is to use common sense and realize there just aren't any free lunches.

· There have been however, some interesting investment products offered over the past few years that attempt to provide upside potential in a rising stock market while providing protection on the downside.

· Each share some common characteristics - high fees and a lack of transparency and liquidity.

· Three of these new ideas have raked in billions in the first six months of 2014. The first category is known as "liquid alternative" mutual funds. These funds employ hedge fund like strategies without some of the hedge fund restrictions.

· Traditionally hedge funds have been for the ultra-wealthy because of their high minimum investment. Liquid Alternative funds don't have high minimums and they are much more liquid than traditional hedge funds.

· Liquid alternative funds are also known as "long - short funds". Theoretically these funds can make a much higher return than a traditional money market fund without the traditional stock market risks.

· So far this year through June, Liquid Alternative funds have taken in $14.6 billion.

· Mutual fund companies say they offer investors the potential to capture some of the upside return of stocks in good markets while offering protection in down markets.

· With historically low interest rates, bond investors are also looking for that perfect investment that combines high yields without the interest rate risk of the general market.

· Wall Street's answer - Unconstrained Bond Funds. These funds are also referred to as "go anywhere" funds.

· So far this year unconstrained bond funds have attracted $20.7 billion.

· Unlike traditional bond funds, Unconstrained Funds have the freedom to invest in just about anything from cash to high-yield junk bonds.

· Another new investment strategy - Nontraded Real Estate Investment Trusts. Through June of this year, nontraded REITs have raised $8.8 billion.

· Investors are attracted to these REITs because of their high yields, some over 7%. The drawback, high costs high fees and the lack of liquidity.

· Another popular investment strategy for worried investors is Structured Notes. In many cases, structured notes offer meager yields with a bonus. A percentage of stock market gains, if they occur and a guaranteed maturity value.

· And let's not forget Leveraged and Inverse Exchange Traded Funds. Leveraged ETF's are designed to provide investors with a higher percentage return than the market over the span of one day. Inverse funds are designed to move in the opposite direction of a specific index. These types of ETF's appeal to the greedy side of investors emotions. They can be used successfully by professional traders but for the average retail investor, they almost always disappoint.

· Do any of these new and very popular investment strategies make sense?

· Each one of these strategies can have a place in a portfolio. For retail investors that place is probably a small percentage of the overall portfolio.

· There are lower-cost, less complicated and more liquid alternatives for each of these strategies. That's not to say that these strategies can't be profitable in certain situations.

· For most investors-- I would recommend a more traditional approach. Return to index of stories...

SOME BLEW A WELCOME.

BUT MANY ARE FRUSTRATED MIGRANTS AREN'T GOING STRAIGHT HOME.

THE OBAMA PLAN IS TO SEND THE KIDS BACK.

sot: Jeh Johnson, Homeland Security Secretary

THE MESSAGE TO CONGRESS IS: OK NEARLY 4 BILLION TO SPEED UP THE PROCESS.

REPUBLICANS WOULD ELIMINATE THE HEARINGS THAT CENTRAL AMERICA MIGRANTS ARE ENTITLED TO. AND THEIR RELEASE, WHILE THEY WAIT, WITH A NOTICE TO APPEAR.

sot: Sen. John Cornyn

"sometimes called a notice to disappear, it's actually been interpreted to be a permiso in Central America or permission in essence to stay in the United States."

MELANOMA CONTINUES TO BE A MAJOR CONCERN IN CANCER CARE.

BUT IN TODAYS HEALTH MATTERS, AMY OSHIER REPORTS THERE ARE SEVERAL BRIGHT SPOTS. Return to index of stories...

HEALTH MATTERS-PKG

THE BRIGHT SPOT WHEN IT COMES TO MELANOMA IS THE SUCCESS IN TREATING IT, PROVIDED IT'S CAUGHT EARLY.

DR. FRANK RODRIGUEZ/ONCOLOGIST

RUNS:

16:37 If melanoma gets picked up early usually a surgery is all you need.

THE MOST DEADLY FORM OF SKIN CANCER, THE RISK OF DYING FROM IT IS 70% LOWER IN PEOPLE WHO HAVE REGULAR DOCTOR VISITS. THE LOGIC BEING, THEY ARE MORE LIKELY TO PICK UP ON AN IRREGULAR MOLE WHEN IT IS MOST TREATABLE.

DR. FRANK RODRIGUEZ/ONCOLOGIST

RUNS:

20:51 Once a diagnosis is made either a general surgeon or sometimes a dermatologist needs to cut it out. And they need to cut it out with a healthy line of tissue around it to make sure that theres nothing left behind.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

General recommendations call for a biopsy of the sentinel node. It's the most likely lymph node which collects what drains from that particular part of skin. The hope is, the cancer hasn't left it's original site.

DR. FRANK RODRIGUEZ/ONCOLOGIST

RUNS:

19:58 It can spread to either other parts of the skin, it can spread to the lymph nodes but it can also go to the lungs, it can go to the brain. Melanoma's one of those tumors that can progress very, very rapidly.

A HOST OF NEW DRUGS AND TREATMENTS ARE EXTENDING THE LIVES OF ADVANCED MELANOMA PATIENTS. INCLUDING A DRUG CALLED YERVOY THAT IMPROVES THE BODY'S ABILITY TO TARGET AND ATTACK MELANOMA CELLS.

DR. FRANK RODRIGUEZ/ONCOLOGIST

RUNS:

2:32 It really gets the immune system going and once that immune system is fired up like that, it can find any circulating melanoma cells and try to destroy them.

STILL DEADLY AND DANGEROUS, EARLY DETECTION AND BETTER TREATMENTS ARE CREATING A BRIGHTER FUTURE FOR PEOPLE WITH MELANOMA. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...

GROCERY BATTLE-ONCAM

A NEW BATTLEFRONT AT THE GROCERY STORE: FARM-TO-TABLE AND SNACK FOODS ARE A GROWING TREND AS CONSUMERS INCREASINGLY TURN TO MORE HEALTHY NATURAL DIET TRENDS.

WHICH COMPANIES ARE WINNING OVER SHOPPERS?

COURTNEY REAGAN HAS THE STORY. Return to index of stories...

GROCERY BATTLE-PKG

EVERYBODY EATS. BUT *WHAT* WE EAT AND *WHEN* WE EAT IS SHIFTING. AND THAT'S KEEPING GROCERS ON THEIR TOES WHEN IT COMES TO OFFERING THE RIGHT PRODUCTS AT THE RIGHT PRICE.

"The consumer is moving from one desire after the other the food retailer has got to be prepared to move very quickly as those demand from that customer happen, or change, they gotta be able to react quickly to get the product and services to keep up with it."

ORGANIC, GLUTEN FREE, NON-GMO, LESS SODIUM AND PROTEIN-PACKED… CONSUMERS' CRAVING FOR "HEALTHY" HAS SHAKEN UP THE SNACK FOODS AISLE AND HELPED SOME COMPANIES STAND OUT.

DIAMOND FOODS, MAKER OF PROTEIN-PACKED NUT MIXES LIKE EMERALD BRAND AND DIAMOND OF CALIFORNIA, SAW ITS SNACK SEGMENT REVENUES GROW ALMOST 10 PERCENT LAST QUARTER.

DIAMOND'S KETTLE BRAND CHIPS ALSO LAND ON MANY "TOP HEALTH SNACK" LISTS.

HAIN CELESTIAL, BOULDER BRANDS AND ANNIES ARE OTHER PLAYERS OFFERING ORGANIC, GLUTEN-FREE FOODS THAT RBC CAPITAL MARKET'S ANALYST DAVID PALMER COUNTS AS WINNERS.

".the natural and organic space is on fire. It's never been a better time to be in business in natural and organic from a demand perspective"

"Over the last few years, consumers' shift from 3 standard meals per day, to smaller more frequent meals. is fueling snack sales. and the key millennial demographic is also particularly interested in fast, fresh, healthy, farm-to-table options. spurring more trips to local grocery stores like this one, instead of national supermarkets."

STRAIGHT-FROM-THE-FARM FOOD OPTIONS ARE PARAMOUNT FOR GROCERY STORE PROFITS. CONSUMERS ARE WILLING TO PAY A PREMIUM, BUT ONLY TO A POINT. ACCORDING TO A P-W-C REPORT 67% OF CONSUMERS SAY COMPETITIVE PRICES ARE STILL A FACTOR WHEN IT COMES TO WHERE TO SHOP -- WITH 47% SEEKING OUT FARMER'S MARKET OPTIONS WITHIN THE STORE.

KROGER LEADS THE GROCERY-PACK WHEN IT COMES CHECKING OFF THE REQUIREMENTS ON SHOPPERS' LISTS. S-A-P FOOD CONSULTANT RANDY EVINS SAYS THE GROCER IS LEADING THE CHARGE WHEN IT COMES STOCKING SHELVES WITH FRESH, HEALTHY, ORGANIC CHOICES AT COMPETITIVE PRICES, LEAVING RIVALS PLAYING CATCH-UP

FINDING THE PERFECT RECIPE TO FULFILL SHOPPERS' DEMANDS ISN'T EASY WHEN THE ONLY THING CONSTANT IN GROCERY, IS CHANGING TASTES.

THEY THOUGHT THEY HAD NO TIME TO SPARE. SHOPPERS IN A STRIP CENTER PARKING LOT TAKING MATTERS INTO THEIR OWN HANDS, AFTER NOTICING TWO SMALL CHILDREN IN A HOT JEEP.

"It was a crazy situation man."

GABRIEL DEL VALLE SAYS HE STEPPED OUT OF HIS NEARBY SHOP AFTER HEARING THE SOUND OF CHILDREN CRYING OUT IN DESPERATION.

"The kids were in there crying. I mean you would understand. It's real hot."

GABE SHOT THIS VIDEO WITH HIS PHONE. HE SAYS ONE GUY GOT USED A HAMMER TO SMASH OPEN THE WINDOWS.

"Even then they could barely open the doors because there was a child lock on."

AFTER SEVERAL MINUTES, THE KIDS WERE FREED. THE CHILDREN'S MOM APPARENTLY SAID SHE HAD LEFT THEM THERE ONLY TEMPORARILY SO THAT SHE COULD GET A HAIR CUT.

BUT GABE BELIEVES NOTHING JUSTIFIES TREATING CHILDREN LIKE THIS.

"Even a dog can die. Imagine a person."

standup - And you can see some of that glass still covering a portion of this parking lot. Now no one here called police. We are told the mom came out, pleaded with everyone, said she just made a terrible mistake. Fortunately it appears as though her children were unharmed Return to index of stories...
