IN 2008 CHARLOTTE COUNTY RESIDENTS VOTED IN FAVOR OF ONE PERCENT LOCAL OPTION SALES TAX.

COMBINED WITH THE SIX PERCENT STATE SALES TAX, THEY ARE CURRENTLY PAYING 7 CENTS TO EVERY DOLLAR

ONE CENT OUT OF THAT SEVEN GOES TO COUNTY TO FUND PROJECTS DECIDED ON BY THE BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS.

COUNTY RESIDENTS WILL VOTE ON RENEWING THE TAX THIS FALL.

SOME PEOPLE AREN'T TOO SOLD ON THE IDEA.

"The county needs to learn how to spend their tax revenue properly, that's the problem their spending them on unecessary projects rather than spending them on the community and spending them on something that would benefit the taxpayers rather than hurting taxpayers."

THIS TIME AROUND COUNTY COMMISSIONERS AREN'T SET ON HOW LONG THE TAX WILL BE COLLECTED OR WHAT THE MONEY WILL BE SPENT ON.

THAT IS WHY THEY ARE MEETING TODAY.

THE EXPANSION OF THE CHARLOTTE COUNTY JUSTICE CENTER- A 36 MILLION DOLLAR PROJECT- UP FOR DISCUSSION.

'Part of that expansion includes converting this records center which currently holds 22 thousand boxes complete with files dating back to the beginning of Charlotte County."

COUNTY LEADERS SAY IT'S NECESSARY AND THEY COULD USE THE SPACE.

"Were pretty much at max, we;ve got every courtroom in use, we've got every judicial chamber in use, the state attorney has no more offices left."

COMMISSIONERS WILL DECIDE WHETHER TO PASS AN ORDINANCE SHORTENING THE TAX COLLECTION PERIOD FROM 8 YEARS TO SIX AND REMOVING THE JUSTICE CENTER FROM THE PROJECT LIST.

BUT THEY HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN ABOUT THE EXPANSION PROJECT, IN A SEPARATE DECISION COMMISSIONER WILL VOTE ON PASSING AN ORDINANCE THAT'LL CREATE A SEPARATE TWO YEAR PERIOD OF COLLECTION.

MONEY FROM THAT WILL GO TO THE JUSTICE CENTER PROJECT.

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

MORE AM STORMS FOR WEDNESDAY

It was a stormy start to the day across Southwest Florida, but a sun-filled finish with highs in the mid to upper 80s. An isolated shower will be possible this evening inland, otherwise expect dry conditions and temps in the 70s. We'll see overnight lows in the mid 70s.

More storms are expected for Wednesday. Once again, activity will build overnight in the Gulf of Mexico and push onshore in the morning hours. Rain and storms will be likely through much of the morning time frame, with the activity pushing inland in the early afternoon. Highs on Wednesday will be in the mid to upper 80s.

Another round of morning showers and storms will again be possible on Thursday. The activity will again push inland in the PM hours with highs in the low 90s.

Our winds begin to transition back to the east on Friday, bringing a better chance for storms later in the day. Highs on Friday will be in the low 90s.

The more typical AM sunshine-PM storms routine kicks into high gear for the weekend, with highs both days in the low 90s.

There are some indications that tropical moisture may move in early next week, which would increase the rain and storm chances across Southwest Florida.

TROPICAL UPDATE

It is still nice and quiet across the tropics today. Some forecast models are indicating the atmosphere becoming more conducive for development, but no major development is expected at this point.

No major activity is expected over the next 5 days. Return to index of stories...
