FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

With an onshore flow in place for the remainder of the day, that'll keep the door open for some passing downpours and thunderstorms across Southwest Florida.

Our inland areas will see the highest rain chances, but even closer to the coast we'll be watch for some rain to build in from the northwest out of the Gulf of Mexico.

Outside of the scattered rain, expect partial sunshine with highs around 90 and winds out of the west southwest at 10 mph.

Some lingering rain and thunderstorm activity will be possible tonight, particularly along the coast.

Onshore flow will increase the chances for more morning storms again Thursday morning. Overall Thursday's forecast looks to be very similar to what were expecting today.

By the weekend, we start to transition back to our afternoon storm pattern, meaning mornings will be sunnier and drier.

TEEN SAFE CARS-TC MON REVEAL

A CONCERN FOR PARENTS THIS AFTERNOON -

NBC2 HAS LEARNED MANY TEENAGERS DRIVE SMALLER,CHEAPER, CARS WITH LITTLE CRASH PROTECTION OR SAFETY TECHNOLOGY.

THAT'S POSING MAJOR PROBLEMS.

A NEW GOVERNMENT STUDY FINDS 28 PERCENT OF PARENTS BUY MINICARS OR SMALL CARS THAT OFTEN DON'T OFFER GOOD CRASH PROTECTION.

MORE THAN HALF OF VEHICLES BOUGHT FOR TEENS WERE 2006 OR OLDER -- LACKING THE LATEST SAFETY TECHNOLOGY.

CHRIS CLACKUM REPORTS. Return to index of stories...

TEEN SAFE CARS-PKG

THE SMALL, CHEAPER USED CAR. HAS LONG BEEN THE GO-TO VEHICLE FOR NEW TEENAGE DRIVERS. MAINLY BECAUSE IT'S USUALLY ALL THE PARENT CAN AFFORD.

BUT NOW, THE INSURANCE INSTITUTE FOR HIGHWAY SAFETY SAYS MANY OF THOSE CARS ARE JUST NOT SAFE.

"They're driving vehicles that don't provide good crash protection and many drive vehicles that don't have many safety technologies."

TECHNOLOGIES LIKE ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL. OR E-S-C.

"It's a life-saving technology. ESC reduces the risk of a fatal single vehicle crash by half. "

HIGHWAY CRASHES ARE THE LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH FOR TEENAGERS IN THE U-S. AND THE INSTITUTE'S STUDY FINDS THAT.

-28% OF PARENTS BUY MINICARS OR SMALL CARS THAT OFTEN DON'T OFFER GOOD CRASH PROTECTION

-MORE THAN HALF OF VEHICLES BOUGHT FOR TEENS WERE 2006 OR OLDER -- LACKING THE LATEST SAFETY TECHNOLOGY.

-AND EVEN MORE, TWO-THIRDS, OF FAMILY HAND-ME-DOWNS WERE 2006 OR OLDER.

SO, THE INSTITUTE'S COME UP WITH A SPECIFIC LIST OF SAFER CARS FOR TEENAGERS.

"We believe that parents can select a vehicle off this list and have a lot more security knowing that their teen is less likely to be in a crash and when they're in a crash they're going to get really good protection."

THEY ALSO SAY CHECK TO MAKE SURE ANY USED CAR YOU'RE BUYING HASN'T BEEN INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT OR A RECALL.

ERIC HOLDER-PKG

ATTORNEY GENERAL ERIC HOLDER SPEAKING AT HISTORICALLY BLACK HOWARD UNIVERSITY TODAY , CALLING ON CONGRESS TO EXPAND THE PROTECTIONS OF THE VOTING RIGHTS ACT. HOLDER ONCE AGAIN WADES INTO THE ISSUE 0F RACE:

"As it stands, our society is not yet colorblind; nor should it be, given the disparities that still afflict and divide us. We must be color brave and must never forget that all are made better and more prosperous if all are given equal opportunities."

PROVOCATIVE FOR SURE, BUT IT IS HIS COMMENTS ABOUT RACE OVER THE WEEKEND THAT ARE GETTING ALL THE ATTENTION -- HOLDER SUGGESTING ON SOME LEVEL RACE IS A FACTOR IN THE TREATMENT HE AND THE PRESIDENT RECEIVE FROM SOME SEGMENTS OF THE PUBLIC.

"There's a certain level of vehemence, it seems to me, that's directed at me directed at the president. You know, people talking about taking their country back."

THE FACT IS DEMOCRATS HAVE ALSO USED THAT PHRASE "TAKING THEIR COUNTRY BACK" -- REFERRING TO REPUBLICANS INCLUDING FORMER PRESIDENT GEORGE W BUSH, BUT HOLDER IS TAKING AIM AT THOSE ON THE RIGHT CALLING FOR THE IMPEACHMENT OF THE PRESIDENT AND THE ATTORNEY GENERAL HIMSELF.

"There's a certain racial component to this for some people. I don't think this is the thing that is a main driver, but for some there's a racial animus."

RADIO HOST RUSH LIMBAUGH SLAMMED HOLDER FOR THE COMMENTS.

"President of the Unites States, Attorney General of the united States, awwww poor guys. Poor victims of mean racist America."

BUT NOT ALL REPUBLICANS ARE IN ATTACK MODE.

OHIO SENATOR ROB PORTMAN ON FOX NEWS WAS TEMPERED.

"I don't think it helps us, I don't think it takes us in the right direction in terms of making progress on dealing with this eternal issue we've got in America, which is to make sure that we are doing everything we possibly can do to fight racism."

BUT THE COMBATIVE TONE, MUCH LIKE SARAH PALIN'S CALL FOR IMPEACHMENT OF THE PRESIDENT --

"So it's time to impeach."

HAS SOME REPUBLICANS SAYING ITS ALL PLAYING INTO THE DEMOCRATS HANDS IN A MIDTERM ELECTION YEAR.

"Impeachment is exactly what the president wants to talk about. Just like he liked the Republicans and the conservatives to about him being born in Kenya for five or fix years. He's happy to have the Republicans talk about impeaching him. Bad thing to do, the politics of that are all wrong." Return to index of stories...

Frequent sinus sufferers will also point to the weather itself as a trigger. It's thought the mucus in our noses may become thicker, which blocks sinuses and leads to congestion. In turn it causes pain, stuffiness and headaches.

ARLENE WRIGHT/NURSE PRACTITIONER

RUNS:

2:25 What your goal is, is to relieve the pain. Which can be done with 4:00 some type of acetaminophen or anti-inflammatory for the pain, nasal steroids to help reduce the inflammation, nasal saline to basically keep things moist.

FORECAST OPEN Return to index of stories...

TRACKING THE TROPICS

Things are quiet in the Gulf, Caribbean and Atlantic waters. No major activity expected in coming days. Return to index of stories...

NEW ROBOTS-VO IN PLASMA

NBC2 IS GIVING YOU A LOOK AT CUTTING EDGE TECHNOLOGY. THAT SOME SAY MAY BE A LITTLE CREEPY. EVEN SCARY.

NEW ROBOTS-PKG

WHY DOES SOMETHING SO COOL HAVE TO BE SO EXPENSIVE?

HONDA'S HUMANOID ROBOT ASIMO IS ALWAYS A CROWD PLEASER.

BUT THE NEARLY $1 MILLION DOLLAR PRICE TAG PREVENTS PRETTY MUCH EVERYONE FROM OWNING IT.

NOW IMAGINE THIS IN YOUR FAMILY'S FUTURE.

A ROBOT THAT GETS YOU OUT OF BED, SERVES YOU A DRINK, EVEN MAKES YOU BREAKFAST.

"This robot can understand the location of the bed, the fridge, and the kitchen."

TWENDY-ONE IS THE BRAINCHILD OF WASEDA UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR SHIGEKI SUGANO.

HIS TEAM'S MISSION: MASS PRODUCTION.

MAKING A ROBOT LIKE THIS - BOTH RELIABLE AND AFFORDABLE.

"Office, home, and also the factories."

HE SAYS IT'LL BE 30 TO 50 YEARS BEFORE "FAMILY ROBOTS" ARE ROLLING OFF ASSEMBLY LINES LIKE "FAMILY CARS."

THE TECHNOLOGY IS STILL TOO EXPENSIVE.

"Pepper!"

BUT COMMERCIAL ROBOTS ARE ALREADY HERE.

FOR ABOUT $2,000 - PEPPER IS DESIGNED TO SENSE IF YOU'RE HAVING A BAD DAY AND CHEER YOU UP.

Paro!

Will: Paro!

FOR JUST UNDER $6,000 - THIS THERAPY-ROBOT.

A CUDDLY COMFORT FOR SENIORS WHO CAN NO LONGER CARE FOR THEIR PETS.

AND SOME SAY THIS IS THE NEXT BIG THING IN JAPANESE ROBOTICS.

"She is an android newscaster."

"Android newscaster?"

"Yes."

BLINKING EYES, SILICONE SKIN, LIFELIKE MOVEMENTS.

THE NEW ANDROIDS AT THIS TOKYO TECHNOLOGY MUSEUM LOOK ALMOST LIKE REAL PEOPLE -WITH A LOT PLASTIC SURGERY.

THIS IS KIND OF DEEP BREATHING

These prototypes are not for sale - yet.

And they only work with a person at the controls.

Same for this Telenoid - an experimental communication device that kind of resembles a dismembered doll.

"Okay please pick me up."

"Hello."

IT'S DESIGNED TO FEEL MORE PERSONAL THAN A PHONE CALL, BECAUSE YOU'RE TALKING TO A HUMAN-LIKE FACE.

"Someone can teach through a telenoid?"

"Yes, maybe. Because we can see lip movement as well."

IT ALL MAY SEEM A BIT STRANGE TO SOME.

BUT IT WASN'T TOO LONG AGO WHEN MANY THOUGHT CAMERA PHONES WOULD NEVER CATCH ON.

WE ALL KNOW HOW THAT TURNED OUT.

CALL 'EM COOL, CALL 'EM CREEPY.

JAPANESE ENGINEERS HOPE SOMEDAY YOU'LL CALL THESE ROBOTS YOUR OWN.

WILL RIPLEY, CNN, TOKYO. Return to index of stories...

she looked at me and said daddy, will I ever be a real princess? And, you know, you never as a parent want to tell a child they can't be something. If she had asked a question could she be a doctor or lawyer, the answer most certainly would have been yes. So i responded with yes as a reply. And being a parent that doesn't like to make false promises to their children, after i had said those words to her, I knew that I had to act in some way to try to honor that.

HE DID SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND BIR TAWIL, ONE OF THE LAST UNCLAIMED PIECES OF LAND ON THE PLANET BETWEEN EGYPT AND SUDAN.

GET THIS, IT TOOK HIM 14 HOURS TO TRAVEL THROUGH THE DESERT BEFORE HE COULD PLANT A FLAG HIS CHILDREN DESIGNED. Return to index of stories...

We'd like to disconnect please.

Okay. So why is it you don't want the faster speed?

ALL RYAN BLOCK WANTED WAS TO CANCEL HIS COMCAST INTERNET AND CABLE SUBSCRIPTION.

BUT THE COMCAST GUY WASN'T GOING TO HAVE IT.

I'm just trying to figure out here what it is about Comcast service that you're not liking? You're not wanting to keep.

BLOCK, WHO DID NOT WANT TO GO ON CAMERA, SAID HE SWITCHED PROVIDERS, BUT HE NEVER EXPECTED IT WOULD BE SO TOUGH.

So, what is it about this other internet provider, TV provider that's making it sound so much better than the number one TV service available?

I don't know. It's totally arbitrary decision.

Okay, so why not keep what you know works?

BLOCK -- A TECH JOURNALIST -- RECORDED AND POSTED THE CALL -- SO FAR MORE THAN 2 MILLION HITS, AND PEOPLE CAN'T BELIEVE WHAT THEY HEAR.

I don't see the need to get into it. If I want to cancel my service, I want to cancel my service. There's no need to debate anything.

THE COMCAST REP WAS PERSISTENT.

Why don't you want those services?

Because I'm not interested in your services any longer, can you.

Okay. So you're not interested in the fastest internet in the country?

Nope.

IN A STATEMENT COMCAST WROTE:

"WE ARE VERY EMBARRASSED. THE WAY IN WHICH OUR REPRESENTATIVE COMMUNICATED WITH HIM IS UNACCEPTABLE."

standup -

So even after that 20 minute call. And they finally heard what they wanted to hear. The Blocks still didn't trust their service was canceled. They decided to come to an office in person, just to make sure.

AND TONIGHT -- BLOCK WAS EXPECTING A PERSONAL CALL FROM COMCAST EXECUTIVES -- PRESUMABLY AN APOLOGY -- HOPEFULLY IT WAS A QUICK CALL. Return to index of stories...
