FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

WARM TEMPS TO DOMINATE THE WEEKEND

Warm temperatures and reduced coverage of rain on Saturday highlight the upcoming weekend forecast across Southwest Florida.

On Saturday, a wedge of somewhat drier air will continue to be over the Florida peninsula, cutting back on the coverage of rain across the state. Though an isolated shower or thunderstorm will be remain possible, it appears most backyards in the region will trend to stay on the dry side through Saturday afternoon.

Though the coverage of rain will be below what's seasonal for July in Southwest Florida tomorrow, temperatures will be warmer than what's typical for this time of year. The average high temperature at Fort Myers is 92 degrees for this time of year. On Saturday though, temps at their warmest are expected to be closer to the mid 90s, with expected highs approaching 94 degrees at Fort Myers.

Inland areas of the state could see afternoon temps approach the mid to upper 90s just after lunchtime on Saturday.

On Sunday, we will have a more favorable weather setup to allow conditions yielding late afternoon and early evening sea breeze induced showers and storms. Highs should continue to top out just warmer than average, with temps near 93 degrees.

For the upcoming work week, showers and thunderstorms look likely in the afternoon for Monday and Tuesday. Temperatures should max out in the low to mid 90s in the afternoon.

TROPICAL UPDATE

Tropical weather conditions are generally quiet across the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico. There are no tropical features in play at this time, and no organization of any tropical activity is expected through the course of the next three to five days. Return to index of stories...

NBC'S RICHARD ENGEL REPORTS FROM GAZA CITY. Return to index of stories...

ISRAEL AND GAZA-PKG

Israel is continuing its ground offensive against the Gaza Strip.

Most of the activity is focused on the perimeter of the Gaza Strip, areas that border Israel

Israel says that its military objective is to destroy tunnels that Hamas has dug right along the border, under the border in fact, tunnels that militants have used to sneak into Israel and carry out attacks.

"Our understanding is that the current military ground operations are designed to deal with the tunnels and we are hopeful that Israel will continue to approach this process in a way that minimizes civilian casualties."

But here in Gaza there are already casualties.

Palestinian officials say more than 20 people killed just today, just during the first full day of this military offensive.

The civilians have been told to avoid conflict areas.

The Israeli military is in some cases telephoning people by name telling them to leave their houses to find safer areas, but the Gaza Strip is a closed zone.

The borders are sealed, Gazans can't go to Egypt, they certainly can't go to Israel, so there is nowhere for them to go.

IT'S ESTIMATED THAT 8-MILLION AMERICANS SUFFER FROM GOUT.

AND IF YOU'VE EVER HAD IT. YOU KNOW IT'S EXTREMELY PAINFUL.

IT STEMS FROM A BUILDUP OF URIC ACID BROUGHT ON BY DIET.

IN TODAYS HEALTH MATTERS. AMY OSHIER EXPLAINS THE CONNECTION BETWEEN GOUT AND YOUR GUT. Return to index of stories...

HEALTH MATTERS-PKG

HISTORICALLY, GOUT WAS CONSIDERED A 'RICH MAN'S DISEASE'. THE PRODUCT OF EXCESS, IT WAS ASSOCIATED WITH INDULGING IN TOO MUCH.

DR. GARY GOFORTH/FAMILY PRACTICE

RUNS:

1:18 It's a condition it's been around for ages and ages. We typically think of it as a disease caused by poor eating habits. The classic scenario is somebody that's drinking heavily; eating fatty foods.

TO GET RELIEF FROM CRIPPLING PAIN, SUFFERERS WOULD SOMETIMES PROP THEIR FOOT ON A PILLOW, ADDING TO THE STEREOTYPE. IN REALITY, GOUT HAS SPREAD TO THE COMMON MAN. IT IS ACTUALLY A CASE OF ACUTE ARTHRITIS.

DR. GARY GOFORTH/FAMILY PRACTICE

RUNS:

:32 That causes extreme pain, swelling and redness in joints. The classic scenario the joint at the base of the right toe. Usually it lasts 24-48 hours.

IT IS BROUGHT ON BY A BUILDUP OF URIC ACID WHICH HAS CRYSTALIZED IN THE JOINTS. SOME PEOPLE HAVE A GENETIC PREDISPOSITION, MEDICATION CAN ALSO CAUSE IT. A COMMON SOURCE OF URIC ACID COMES FROM THE FOODS WE EAT: SEAFOOD RICH IN PURINES, MEATS, SUGARY DRINKS AND ALCOHOL. ON THE FLIP SIDE, OTHER FOODS MAY HELP CONTROL IT.

DR. GARY GOFORTH/FAMILY PRACTICE

RUNS:

2:27 We tell people to eat fresh vegetables, eat more dairy products, drink coffee.

1:18 People that eat high amounts of low fat dairy products and drink coffee have lower rates of gout.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

One aspect of the long-held belief that gout is rich man's disease, is in part true. While it has no link to wealth- Gout is mostly a man's disease.

DR. GARY GOFORTH/FAMILY PRACTICE

RUNS:

4:35 We see it a whole lot more in men. It can occur in women but is much more common in men. And I usually see them middle aged 30s or 40s.

DESPITE THE MISCONCEPTIONS- THERE IS STILL A LINK BETWEEN GOUT AND YOUR GUT. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...

TSA FEE HIKES-PLASMA

THE COST OF FLYING IS GOING UP AGAIN. MONDAY.

BUT THIS TIME, THE AIRLINES HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE TICKET PRICE INCREASE.

NBC'S CHRIS CLACKUM TAKES A CLOSE LOOK AT *WHY WE WILL BE FORCED TO SHELL OUT MORE MONEY TO TAKE TO THE SKY. Return to index of stories...

TSA FEE HIKES-PKG

STARTING MONDAY, THE TRANSPORTATION SECURITY ADMINISTRATION IS RAISING THE FEE IT CHARGES FLYERS.

.MORE THAN DOUBLING WHAT'S ALREADY TACKED ON TO EVERY SINGLE AIRLINE TICKET. GOING FROM $2.50 PER LEG. TO $5.60 WITH NO LIMIT!

.WHICH CAN ADD UP IF YOUR LAYOVER EXCEEDS FOUR HOURS. AND, THEREFORE, BECOMES A SEPARATE LEG OF YOUR TRIP.

"So, in some cases, consumers will be paying 3 to 4 times more in these fees for every flight they book"

THE FEE HIKE WAS MANDATED BY CONGRESS AND WHAT IRKS THE AIRLINES IS THAT MOST OF IT WILL NOT BE SPENT TO IMPROVE TSA OR SECURITY.

BUT RATHER TO REDUCE THE DEFICIT.

AND ACCORDING TO THE POINTS GUY, BRIAN KELLY.ALL YOU CAN DO IS BE MORE CAREFUL IN BOOKING YOUR FLIGHT.

"Generally, if you're flying from smaller airports and the more segments you fly, the more fees you'll be paying."

WHILE ALL AIR TRAVELERS ARE SUBJECT TO THE NEW FEES, THOSE MOST LIKELY TO END UP PAYING MORE ARE THOSE WHO BOOK ROUND-TRIPS WITH LONG STOPOVERS.

BODY GARBAGE-PKG

FRED SIMERSON DIDN'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT HIS NEIGHBOR. JEREMY WHITFOTH.

"He moved out a week later and I haven't seen him since."

THAT WAS A WHILE AGO. SO FRED THOUGHT.

BUT FOR SOMETIME WHITFOTH HAS BEEN RIGHT THERE IN THE GARAGE ACROSS THE STREET.

THAT IS UNTIL THURSDAY. WHEN TWO MEN HIRED BY THE LANDLORD TO CLEAN OUT THE HOUSE PULLED UP AND GO TO WORK.

"I saw the garage door open so I figured they have there hands full because when I looked inside the garage, it was full man."

THERE WAS PLENTY INSIDE. INCLUDING TRASH AND RODENTS.

PERHAPS that's WHAT THE MEN THOUGHT THEY SMELLED.WHEN THEY FOUND WHITFOTH.

"That this was a Halloween type prop or mannequin that was left hanging in the garage as a cruel hoax by the former tenants for the landlord."

CONVINCED IT WAS JUST A MANNEQUIN. THE MEN TOOK THE BODY TO THE WEST HERNANDO TRANSFER STATION.WHERE PEOPLE CAN DUMP HOUSEHOLD WASTE.

THEY TOLD WORKERS THERE, THEIR MANNEQUIN THEORY.

BUT THOSE CALLED DEPUTIES.

.WHO QUICKLY FIGURED OUT THE MANNEQUIN WAS ACTUALLY WHITFOTH.

"Investigators say then men came all the way from that house, across busy US19 to that dump site and the entire time they say that body was on top of a pile of trash in the back of a pick up truck."

INVESTIGATORS TELL US WHITFOTH TOOK HIS LIFE.THEY EVEN FOUND A SUICIDE NOTE.

UNTIL THE MEDICAL EXAMINER DOES AN AUTOPSY.THEY CAN ONLY ESTIMATE HOW LONG WHITFOTH.WAS HANGING ON IN THIS GARAGE.

"It was at least a couple of days, to a month and a half." Return to index of stories...
