THURSDAY'S CRASH KILLED ALL OF THE NEARLY 300 ONBOARD.

"Major": "Well, we are 100% sure that it was a civilian plane."

"Grek": "Are there a lot of people?"

THOSE SAME PRO-RUSSIAN REBELS CONTINUED TO LIMIT INTERNATION OBSERVERS ACCESS TO THE SITE, IN EAST UKRAINE.

TONIGHT -- WE'RE HEARING FROM RUSSIAN PRESIDENT VLADIMIR PUTIN.

N-B-C'S JIM MACEDA HAS MORE FROM MOSCOW. Return to index of stories...

MALAYSIA CRASH FOLLOW-PKG

WELL SOME ENCOURAGING SIGNS OF COOPERATION TODAY REGARDING THE MALAYSIA AIRLINES CRASH.

VLADIMIR PUTIN IN A PHONE CALL WITH GERMAN CHANCELLOR ANGELA MERKEL AGREE THAT EVERYTHING MUST BE DONE TO MAKE THE INTERNATIONAL INVESTIGATION AS UNFETTERED AS POSSIBLE.

AND THAT WAS FOLLOWED UP WITH ANOTHER PHONE CALL BETWEEN SECRETARY OF STATE JOHN KERRY AND HIS RUSSIAN COUNTERPART SERGEY LAVROV IN WHICH THEY AGREED THAT BOTH COUNTRIES WILL USE THEIR INFLUENCE ON THE OPPOSING SIDES IN THE CONFLICT TO END, THEY SAID, ALL HOSTILITIES.

SO IT SOUNDS LIKE PUTIN MAY BE FINALLY UNDER PRESSURE FROM INCREASED SANCTIONS PERHAPS AND THE HORRIBLE PRESS THAT HE'S BEEN GETTING AROUND THE WORLD AFTER THE MALAYSIA AIRLINES CRASH HE MAY FINALLY BE DECIDING TO COOPERATE, BUT THERE ARE MANY KREMLIN WATCHERS EVEN HERE IN MOSCOW WHO WOULD CALL THAT PREMATURE.

"President Putin said he would support this, but we will judge them by their actions, not just by their words."

EITHER HE DOUBLES-DOWN ON UKRAINE AND RISKS MAJOR SECTORIAL SANCTIONS, IN ENERGY FOR INSTANCE, WHICH COULD REALLY HURT HIM AND HURT RUSSIA, OR HE CUTS ALL TIES WITH THE PRO-RUSSIAN REBELS AND RISKS SEEING HIS APPROVAL RATING TAKE A BIG DIVE AND IT'S AN ASTRONOMICAL 83-PERCENT RIGHT NOW ACCORDING TO A RECENT GALLOP POLL.

SO AGAIN, THESE LATEST PROMISES FROM MOSCOW SOUND POSITIVE, BUT THE RUSSIAN LEADER HAS ALSO SAID IN THE PAST THAT HE REALLY HAS NO INFLUENCE OVER THE SEPARATISTS.

FORECAST OPEN-CLIP

FORECAST-WXWALL

STORM POTENTIAL RETURNS SUNDAY

Drier air in the mid levels of the atmosphere is helping to keep rain chances fairly low this evening. Coverage of any shower or downpour should remain quite isolated through Saturday.

Overnight temperatures into Sunday morning will remain mild. Lows are forecast to only cool back into the mid and upper 70s.

On Sunday we'll return to a more typical July afternoon for Southwest Florida. Temperatures will again be hot and we'll be expecting more showers and storms to develop especially after lunchtime.

Highs are anticipated to reach 94 at Fort Myers, 91 at Naples and 93 at Port Charlotte. Though the morning should remain rather quiet with the weather, showers and thunderstorms are expected to begin popping up as the afternoon approaches. Coverage should be greatest through the day for communities along and east of I-75.

By Sunday evening it's a possibility a few showers or storms will push back toward the Gulf coast as winds become more easterly oriented late in the day.

For the upcoming work week, we'll bear a decent chance for areas of rain and thunder on Monday and Tuesday. With some more cloud cover highs will be expected to top out near 92 on Monday and 91 on Tuesday.

Rather typical sea breeze induced showers and thunderstorms during the late afternoon and early evening are expected Wednesday and Thursday with highs in the low 90s.

TROPICAL UPDATE

The overall oulook across the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea remains quiet. There are no active tropical cyclones at this time, and no organized development is expected in the next three to five days.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
