GOOD MORNING-2SHOT PUSH

GOOD SUNDAY MORNING, EVERYONE --

I'M STACEY DEFFENBAUGH --

AND I'M CLIFTON FRENCH --

THE TYPICAL SUMMER SHOWERS ARE BACK AFTER A TWO DAY BREAK --

LET'S HEAD OVER TO NBC2'S METEOROLOGIST JASON DUNNING WITH A LOOK AT TODAY'S FORECAST. Return to index of stories...

FIRST WEATHER-WX WALL

The dog days are upon us after most of Southwest Florida spent Saturday afternoon with temperatures as warm as the mid 90s.

We've got another scorcher on the way today with temperatures soaring well into the 90s; from Punta Gorda to Fort Myers, temperatures should peak between 94-96 degrees. For location like Bonita Springs and down to Naples, daytime highs will peak between 92-94 degrees. Golden Gate, Immokalee, Labelle and Palmdale: our temperatures could even reach the upper 90s.

What's more, the heat index will be around 100 degrees today once you factor in the high humidity levels. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids, and wear sunscreen if you're going to be outside for any extended period of time.

One change we'll notice today compared to yesterday is more storms on the radar by this afternoon. Today's storms should be fairly isolated, but don't be surprised if you see some dark skies setting in by the late afternoon and into the evening.

The highest rain chances today will be for areas along and east of I-75, but even our coastal zones could see a passing storm by this evening.

Moisture levels increase as we head into the upcoming week, so expect to see more clouds along with scattered showers and storms by Monday afternoon. This pattern looks to set in through Wednesday, keeping a decent chance for rain and storms in our forecast through mid week.

In the tropics, we're monitoring a few disorganized tropical waves in the open Atlantic, but conditions don't seem favorable enough yet for development in the immediate future. However, we'll need to watch this area a bit more closely toward the end of the month as this region gradually becomes more favorable for tropical development.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA. Return to index of stories...

GIRL STOPS SPEEDERS-trxPKG

If you doubt that one person can make a difference, you haven't met 5-year-old Presley Keeton of Westlake. She was concerned about safety in her neighborhood and a letter she wrote to police got an immediate response.

Like most children, Presley likes to play outside. But, she didn't always feel safe outside her house on Bassett Road. Sometimes she sees cars pass by going faster than the posted 25 mph speed limit. So concerned, she decided to write a letter to the police. Her reason: "because they stop people from speeding," she said.

letter

She invited police to come to her street and see the problem for themselves. The letter was rather convincing. "It was a picture of the road and every car was going above the speed limit. One car was going 89," Presley said.

Her Dad said the letter was entirely Presley's idea to write. "When she decided to do it, I thought there's no better person to kind of get their attention than a 5-year-old. If a 5-year-old notices that it's a problem, then it's probably a pretty big issue," Zach Keeton said.

Presley was expecting a letter in return, instead Officer Tony Lavolpa come to her house Wednesday ready to catch speeders on her street. "It is extremely infrequent for a 5-year-old to communicate with us. And, we thought this would be a good opportunity to maybe make a friend and also address the complaint that she made," Capt. Guy Turner of the Westlake Police Dept. said.

Within an hour, Officer Lavolpa did catch some speeders on the street. "He stopped seven or eight," Presley said. Zach Keeton is proud of what his daughter accomplished with her letter. "I think Presley is a wonderful example of showing that it doesn't matter how old you are that you make a difference," he said.

Presley saYS her street is safer, but

"there is still more speeders to catch." Return to index of stories...

IT'S SENSORY NIGHT THIS TUESDAY AT THE GOLISANO CHILDREN'S MUSEUM OF NAPLES.

IT'S A NIGHT TO PROMOTE FAMILIES PLAYING AND LEARNING TOGETHER IN A LOW-SENSORY MUSEUM EXPERIENCE.

IT'S HELD THE FOURTH TUESDAY OF EVERY MONTH FROM 5-7PM.

THE EVENT IS FOR KIDS WITH SENSORY INTEGRATION NEEDS INCLUDING CHILDREN WITH AUTISM.

According to Mary Fellenz, OTR/L, an Autism Specialist and owner of MF Therapy Group, "Sensations flow into the brain like streams flowing into a lake. Countless bits of sensory information enter our brain at every moment, not only from our eyes and ears, but also from every place in our bodies. When the flow of sensations is disorganized, life can be like a rush hour traffic jam where you become stressed, anxious and unable to process all of the sensory input."

"C'MON accounts for these sensitivities and turns down the lights, and audio visuals in our exhibits, and provides noise canceling headphones in order to respect the needs of all individuals," says Kelsey Johnson, Community Initiatives Manager at C'mon. "Within this environment, those with sensory sensitivities are able to relish in play and learning without over-stimulation or anxiety-inducing aspects. Moreover, adults can engage with their children in a safe and protected environment which enhances the overall family experience." Return to index of stories...

IT WAS 45 YEARS AGO WHEN NEIL ARMSTRONG TOOK MANS FIRST STEP ON THE MOON --

JULY 20TH, 1969 --

ARMSTRONG WAS FOLLOWED BY BUZZ ALDRIN.

WHILE CREWMATE MICHAEL COLLINS ORBITED THEM IN THE COMMAND MODULE.

NASA HAS PLANNED SEVERAL EVENTS TO CELEBRATE THE ANNIVERSARY AND LOOK AHEAD TO THE FUTURE OF SPACE EXPLORATION.

8. HOW TO MARK ANNIVERSARY OF MOON LANDING

One way is to follow on Twitter as the Smithsonian recreates - in 140 characters or less per tweet - the eight-day Apollo flight that took place 45 years ago.

On July 20, 1969, the world watched as Neil Armstrong opened the hatch of the Eagle and stepped outside onto a barren lunar landscape. Buzz Aldrin followed him out the door and they became the first humans to ever walk on the moon. All the while, their third crewmate, Michael Collins, sat in a lonely orbit around moon in the Columbia command module.

The three Apollo 11 astronauts launched toward the moon on July 16, 1969, and returned heroes in a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean on July 24. Only 10 more people would ever put their boots on powdery moon dirt , and no humans have returned since Apollo 17 blasted off the lunar surface on December 14, 1972.

July 20, 2014 will mark the 45th anniversary of the first moonwalk. NASA has planned a slew of events to reflect on the historic landing and look ahead to the future of space exploration. Return to index of stories...
