HELLO-1SH-PUSH

GOOD MORNING AND WELCOME TO NBC-2 NEWS TODAY.

I'M STACEY DEFFENBAUGH. IT'S BEEN A BUSY MORNING.

WE'LL GET TO THE NEWS OF THE DAY IN JUST A MINUTE, BUT WE BEGIN WITH YOUR WEEKEND WEATHER FORECAST.

THE FINAL DAY OF THE WEEKEND FOR MOST OF YOU, LET'S SEE WHAT MOTHER NATURE HAS IN STORE.

METEROLOGISTS JASON DUNNING STANDING BY IN THE HURRICANE TRACKING CETNER. Return to index of stories...

WEATHER-WX CENTER

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

The dog days are upon us after most of Southwest Florida spent Saturday afternoon with temperatures as warm as the mid 90s.

We've got another scorcher on the way today with temperatures soaring well into the 90s; from Punta Gorda to Fort Myers, temperatures should peak between 94-96 degrees. For location like Bonita Springs and down to Naples, daytime highs will peak between 92-94 degrees. Golden Gate, Immokalee, Labelle and Palmdale: our temperatures could even reach the upper 90s.

What's more, the heat index will be around 100 degrees today once you factor in the high humidity levels. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids, and wear sunscreen if you're going to be outside for any extended period of time.

One change we'll notice today compared to yesterday is more storms on the radar by this afternoon. Today's storms should be fairly isolated, but don't be surprised if you see some dark skies setting in by the late afternoon and into the evening.

The highest rain chances today will be for areas along and east of I-75, but even our coastal zones could see a passing storm by this evening.

Moisture levels increase as we head into the upcoming week, so expect to see more clouds along with scattered showers and storms by Monday afternoon. This pattern looks to set in through Wednesday, keeping a decent chance for rain and storms in our forecast through mid week.

In the tropics, we're monitoring a few disorganized tropical waves in the open Atlantic, but conditions don't seem favorable enough yet for development in the immediate future. However, we'll need to watch this area a bit more closely toward the end of the month as this region gradually becomes more favorable for tropical development. Return to index of stories...

DEVELOPING THIS MORNING ON NBC-2.

WE HAVE JUST LEARNED THAT MARRIAGE LICENSE FORMS HAVE BEEN CHANGED FOR SAME SEX COUPLES IN THE FLORIDA KEYS.

THIS HAPPENED DESPITE THE STATE PLACING A HOLD ON A JUDGE'S RULING THAT A GAY MARRIAGE BAN IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL.

STACEY - THIS ALL STARTED LAST THURSDAY WHEN A MONROE COUNTY JUDGE SIDED WITH SAME-SEX COUPLES IN THE KEYS WHO HAVE BEEN CHALLENGING FLORIDA'S VOTER-APPROVED BAN ON GAY MARRIAGE.

HE RULED IT VIOLATES THE 14TH AMENDMENT WHICH GUARANTEES EQUAL PROTECTION. Return to index of stories...

LUCAS: FL GAY MARRIAGE-VO1

ALMOST IMMEDIATELY - REPUBLICAN ATTORNEY GENERAL PAM BONDI APPEALED THAT DECISION, CREATING AN AUTOMATIC STAY.

THAT MEANS GAY COUPLES WILL ONCE AGAIN BE PREVENTED FROM RECEIVING SOME OF THE SAME RIGHTS MARRIED STRAIGHT COUPLES HAVE.

MONROE COUNTY CHANGED THEIR MARRIAGE FORMS ANYWAY - THEY USED TO READ "HUSBAND AND WIFE." NOW, THEY READ "FIRST SPOUSE. SECOND SPOUSE."

NOW, SINCE JUDGE GARCIA OVERTURNED THE BAN, THE CLERK'S OFFICE HAS BEEN RECEIVING CALLS NON-STOP FROM PEOPLE PLANNING KEY WEST WEDDINGS.

SO JUST HOW WILL THIS ADJUSTMENT OF MARRIAGE FORMS AFFECT THE STATE'S HOLD ON GAY MARRIAGES - WELL. NOT MUCH. Return to index of stories...

LUCAS: FL GAY MARRIAGE-ONCAM, VO2

GAY COUPLES IN THE KEYS STILL CAN'T GET MARRIED BECAUSE OF THE STATE'S APPEAL. ALSO, THIS WOULD ONLY IMPACT GAY COUPLES IN MONROE COUNTY.

IT'S IMPORTANT TO NOTE -- THIS ALL COMES AFTER SIX GAY AND LESBIAN COUPLES FILED LAWSUITS EARLIER THIS YEAR TO OVERTURN THE STATE'S GAY MARRIAGE BAN. THEY SAY IT'S UNCONSTITUTIONAL. AND A JUDGE COULD MAKE A RULING ANY DAY NOW. Return to index of stories...

MUCH OF THE FOCUS ON ADHD IS AIMED AT YOUNG KIDS.

BUT THE CONDITION DOESN'T MAGICALLY DISAPPEAR AS THEY AGE.

IN TODAYS HEALTH MATTERS AMY OSHIER LOOKS AT THE IMPORTANCE OF GIVING OLDER CHILDREN MANAGEMENT SKILLS. Return to index of stories...

HEALTH MATTERS: MANAGING KIDS WITH ADHD-PKG

THE NUMBERS ARE ENOUGH TO MAKE YOUR HEAD SPIN: APPROXIMATELY 11% OF CHILDREN BETWEEN 4 AND 17 HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH ADHD AS OF 2011. THAT'S MORE THAN 6-MILLION KIDS. MAKING IT THE MOST COMMON NEUROLOGICAL CONDITION IN CHILDREN.

DR. ELENA REYES/CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST

RUNS:

1:31 The disorder is marked by the inattention. These children have a lot of difficulty with focusing their attention, they are very distractible and they are very impulsive.

THESE TRAITS ARE USUALLY SPOTTED IN EARLY CHILDHOOD. BY FAMILY MEMBERS OR TEACHERS. WHILE MUCH ATTENTION IS FOCUSED ON YOUNGSTERS- OLDER KIDS FACE THEIR OWN BATTLES.

DR. ELENA REYES/CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST

RUNS:

6:40 Really it starts in middle school. A child who is bright and has ADHD can sometimes manage the elementary school classroom. Once you get into middle school you have six different classes with six different teachers you have lockers, you have to go to one place to another. That all takes a lot of organization to remember and these kids have a lot of hard time with it.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

It was commonly thought kids would out-grow their inattention and fidgetiness. And become better able to control their impulses. But in reality- it could get worse. With bigger demands and higher expectations.

DR. ELENA REYES/CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST

RUNS:

7:40 When kids are treated, after being properly diagnosed, they can manage these transitions into middle school, into high school, very well. Ultimately we want them to transition into college.

COMBINATIONS OF BEHAVIOR TRAINING AND MEDICAL MANAGEMENT HAVE BEEN SHOWN TO HELP. SURVEYS OF ADULTS WHO GREW UP WITH A DIAGNOSIS FELT INTERVENTION MADE THEM MORE SUCCESSFUL.

DR. ELENA REYES/CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST

RUNS:

12:20 We are finding students who need help, get the help they need and manage well.

MAKING ADHD A SPEED BUMP, NOT A ROADBLOCK, IN THE CONTINUUM OF LIFE. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...

CRIME STOPPERS-TRX, BUBBA

JULY HAS BEEN DESIGNATED AS NATIONAL AUTO THEFT AWARENESS MONTH.

AND IT'S COINCIDENTALLY A TIME WHEN CAR OWNERS ARE GETTING HIT HARD BY THIEVES LOOKING TO COMMIT QUICK, AND PROFITABLE, CRIMES.

TRISH ROUTTE WITH CRIME STOPPERS HAS INFORMATION ON HOW YOU CAN PREVENT YOURSELF FROM BECOMING A VICTIM. AND HELPING LAW ENFORCEMENT AT THE SAME TIME. Return to index of stories...

CRIME STOPPERS-PKG

It's a simple act that literally takes seconds to complete, but one that's being overlooked

time after time, causing an uptick in auto thefts throughout Southwest Florida.

Sgt. Jason Parks - "It's the easiest type of crime to prevent, just by being self aware."

Unlocked cars are making life quite easy for the criminal element, and in just over the

last month or so, law enforcement has experienced a marked uptick with car thefts -

particularly in residential areas.

Sgt. Jason Parks - "We had a group of kids a few weeks ago who admitted to touching

over 200 cars. They wound up admitting to stealing a car that the guys found up in the

back area of Suncoast."

Trish Routte - "While there are no areas that are immune to grand theft autos, detectives

say they're getting hit the hardest in the northern part of the county and the suspects, in

most cases, are juveniles."

Sgt. Jason Parks - "We have a group of juveniles who have been absolutely tearing us up

with activity."

In most cases, the teens are carhopping, literally going from car to car to see what they

can get - and taking joyrides when the opportunities arise.

Sgt. Parks - "Recently we had a case where they used a stolen car and drove down to

Naples just to go to McDonalds. And then they ended up bringing it back to Island Vista,

where we ultimately ended up locating it."

The increase in the numbers of these crimes can be attributed to the summer months,

when teens are out of school and find themselves with ample amount of idle time, and

excuses to get into trouble.

Sgt. Parks - "I'm tired of dealing with these situations where it was a juvenile, and what

they claim is a mistake, yet they made the conscious choice to go do it. So we're going

to hold them just as accountable as anyone else."'

Investigators believe these teens are targeting one neighborhood at a time, getting as

much as they can as quickly as they can.

Sgt. Jason Parks - "They're not looking to break your windows, they're not looking to

damage. It's targets of opportunity. I've seen maybe two in the last four months where

there's been forced entry."

And the best way to not be a target is to simply lock your doors.

Sgt. Jason Parks - "If you don't use an ounce of prevention, then it's going to be hard to

prevent being a victim."

HELLO AGAIN-TOWERCAM

WELCOME BACK TO THE SECOND HALF HOUR OF NBC-2 NEWS TODAY.

I'M STACEY DEFFENBAUGH.

WE ARE IN STORE FOR ANOTHER HOT AND STEAMY DAY.

HERE'S A LIVE LOOK OUTSIDE OUR NBC-2 STUDIOS.

A LOT OF SUN AND CLOUDS THIS SUNDAY MORNING.

METEOROLOGIST JASON DUNNING HAS MORE ON YOUR FIRST ALERT FORECAST. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WX CENTER
