As Arjen and Yvonne Ryder traveled through Europe the past few weeks.Arjen's brother, Drew, followed their trip on Facebook. But he didn't know they were flying home to Australia Thursday until an uncle who had just brought them to the airport called Drew at his Willmar office.

Yvonne was a teacher, Arjen was an agriculture expert soon to be honored for his devotion to his work. But they're best remembered by family for their love of their children and five grand kids.and for the way they befriended everyone they met.

Happy Monday - will start off dry and sunny through the first of the day. Later this afternoon showers and storms will start blossoming across the urban corridor. Like any other day some of the isoalted storms will float towards the coastline and impact the evening commute.

Highs today will be cooler than weekend but still hot. Area wide, low 90s will be expected and feeling like the upper 90s.

Overnight, we start to dry out and clouds thin out. Mid to low 70s will be the common trend overnight and for the next few days.

Tuesday is on repeat. Highs in the low 90s with showers and storms in the afternoon/early evening.

Tropical Tracker

The National Hurricane Center is keeping an eye on a broad area of low pressure producing diorgonized storms about 1000 miles west-southwest of the Cape Verde Island. FL LOGGERHEAD TURTLES-TRX VOTOPS VO-PLASMA

THE SURVIVAL OF AN ENDANGERED SPECIES RIGHT HERE IN FLORIDA, IS GETTING HELP FROM THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.

MARINE SCIENTIESTS HAVE BEEN following LOGGERHEAD TURTLES ALONG THE GULF COAST FOR

MORE THAN 30 YEARS.

NOW A 'CRITICAL HABITAT' DESIGNATION FOR SOME OF THOSE AREAS, WILL GIVE THOSE TURTLES A BETTER CHANCE OF MAKING THEIR ANNUAL SUMMERTIME VISITS TO THE COAST, FOR YEARS TO COME.

FL LOGGERHEAD TURTLES-PKG

LOGGERHEAD TURTLES SHELLEY AND MONTEGO ARE FAVORITES AT MOTE MARINE AQUARIUM.

"They're just an icon of the state of Florida. They're an icon of living here, they're something that makes our area special, that we all appreciate."

WILD SEA TURTLES MAKE SARASOTA THEIR SUMMER HOME. THEY OFTEN BREED IN THE GULF WATERS, AND TRAVEL TO SHORE TO NEST- AND MOTE SCIENTISTS TRACK THEM THROUGHOUT THEIR JOURNEY.

MARINE SCIENTISTS COUNT NEARLY 200 LOGGERHEADS MAKING THEIR WAY TO SHORE. AND SOME OF THESE TURTLES HAVE BEEN COMING TO THESE SAME BEACHES SINCE THE LATE 80'S.

"It just goes to show you that these are long-lived species that keep coming back to us, and it's so important that we go out there and watch what they're doing year to year and decade to decade."

SCIENTISTS NOW HAVE A LITTLE EXTRA HELP FROM THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IN THAT MISSION. SUNCOAST BEACHES ARE PART OF THE 1,500 MILES OF SHORELINE AND SURROUNDING WATERS LISTED AS A "CRITICAL HABITAT" FOR THE THREATENED SPECIES OF LOGGERHEADS. A DESIGNATION MADE BY THE NATIONAL OCEANIC AND ATMOSPHERIC ADMINSTRATION, AND THE U-S FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE.

"We wanted to make sure we had environments for hatchlings, for the young juveniles, for the older juveniles, for the adults, for the breeding adults."

BEING A "CRITICAL HABITAT" MEANS FEDERAL AGENCIES LIKE THE CORPS OF ENGINEERS WILL NEED TO CONSULT WITH THE FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE ON HOW TO AVOID POTENTIAL IMPACT TO SEA TURTLES BEFORE STARTING ANY PROJECTS HERE.

"What we hope that critical habitat will do for everyone is sort of bring awareness to the plight of and the importantance of loggerhead sea turtles and also help in planning for future activites." Return to index of stories...
