Vadis Parson

"It has a lighting system on it. A breaking system. We have a horn. It has headlights on it. Rearview mirrors. Everything you need to make sure you're safe."

FOR THE PAST YEAR -- THIS HAS BEEN VADIS PARSON'S DREAM --

"We'll be available for regular transport, site seeing tours."

AND FROM THE LOOKS OF IT -- THAT DREAM HAS COME TRUE --

SHE HAS THE PEDICAB, AN OFFICE, BUSINESS CARDS --

EVEN MERCHANDISE WITH HER LOGO FOR SALE --

"Right, haha, but I'm not operating yet, hahaha."

THAT'S BECAUSE RIGHT NOW -- HER BICYCLE CARRIAGE, ISN'T ALLOWED ON CITY STREETS.

HERE'S THE PROBLEM --

IN ORDER FOR HER TO OPERATE, IT HAS TO BE REGULATED.

SINCE IT'S A NEW IDEA IN FORT MYERS, NO SUCH REGULATIONS EXIST.

SO, FOR THE PAST SEVERAL MONTHS, SHE'S WORKED WITH CITY STAFF TO GET AN ORDINANCE PUT TOGETHER --

AND TODAY -- THAT ORDINANCE IS BEING SEEN BY THE CITY COUNCIL FOR THE FIRST TIME.

STU:

"Before these things hit the street, the city wants to make sure they're safe, that they have lights, that they're not going on busy roads. A whole host of issues. That's why this ordinance here is so long."

Nicole DeVaughn, FM Community Development

'It is long, It's complicated."

NICOLE DEVAUGHN IS THE PLANNING MANAGER FOR THE FORT MYERS COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT.

"You've got enforcement regulations, you've got standards on where they can be, how many you can have. You've got insurance regulations. Because you're operating on city streets and sidewalks, we do have to regulate that."

IF THE CITY COUNCIL GIVES IT THE GREEN LIGHT --

THE DOOR TO A NEW INDUSTRY WILL BE OPEN.

AND SOME HARD WORK WILL PAY OFF.

"We're just trying to get it going.' Return to index of stories...

DOWNTOWN RIVER DISTRICT EXPANSION-LIVE U 2

THE CITY COUNCIL IS GETTING ITS FIRST LOOK AT THIS ORDINANCE TODAY --

BUT WON'T BE VOTING ON IT UNTIL A FUTURE MEETING.

IF THIS PASSES, ONLY TWO PEDICAB BUSINESSES WILL BE ABLE TO RUN IN THE CITY, AND THEY'LL ONLY BE ALLOWED TO HAVE TWO WORKING VEHICLES.

THEY'LL ALSO ONLY BE ALLOWED ON CERTAIN STREETS DOWNTOWN.

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

SOME RAIN TONIGHT WITH STORMS POSSIBLE TUESDAY

Scattered showers and thunderstorms will be bubbling up in Southwest Florida through the late afternoon and evening time frame.

The most widespread coverage of the activity will mainly be for areas along and to the east of the I-75 corridor.

Based on radar trends with any downpours and storms this evening, one can expect them to be rather slow moving. The slower the movement of rain and thunder the better the chances are for spots of locally heavy rainfall in areas seeing rain.

Lingering radar activity will begin diminishing later tonight, with conditions calming down after midnight.

For Tuesday and Wednesday, the atmosphere over Southwest Florida will have a good deal of moisture available. That should translate into a fairly widespread coverage of showers and storms, especially during the late afternoon and evening time parts.

Temperatures on Tuesday should reach seasonal levels. Highs are expected at 92 for Fort Myers, with communities in closer proximity to the Gulf of Mexico staying a touch cooler.

TROPICAL UPDATE

An area of disturbed weather in the open Atlantic Ocean is near tropical depression status. Dubbed Invest AL92 as of Monday afternoon, the feature was moving west-northwest between 15 and 20 mph. It's current location is around 1,200 miles away from the Lesser Antilles island chain in the Caribbean Sea.

The National Hurricane Center is pegging this feature with a 70% chance of further formation over the next two days. Return to index of stories...
