FIRST WEATHER-ANI HTC

FIRST WEATHER

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

AFTERNOON STORMS CONTINUE

Tropical moisture continues to stream over south Florida and will provide more fuel for afternoon storms on Wednesday. Today's thunderstorm pattern was very active and wet with plenty of lightning, and tomorrow will likely be very similar. Most of the heavy rain and storms are ending at the time of this forecast update and there will only be a few more showers to track later this evening. Skies will be mostly cloudy tonight and break to mostly sunny by morning with a low temperature in the mid 70's.

Humidity will continue to be high on Wednesday and our daytime high will top out around 90 degrees. Afternoon storms will begin to fire up around lunch time tomorrow and you can expect some areas to be hit with heavy rain and frequent lightning.

Tropical Depression 2 is still moving on a westerly course toward the Windward Islands of the Caribbean and it is not expected to get stronger over the next several days. Return to index of stories...

EVERYONE AGREES FORT MYERS IS GROWING --

THE QUESTION FOR MANY BUSINESS OWNERS AND CITY OFFICIALS IS WHAT DIRECTION THE CITY WILL GROW IN --

AND HOW CAN YOU ATTRACT PEOPLE DOWNTOWN -- WHILE KEEPING IT SAFE --

RIGHT NOW -- CITY STAFF IS WORKING ON A PROPOSED ORDINANCE THAT WOULD ALLOW OPEN ALCOHOL IN CERTAIN AREAS -- SOMETHING THAT'S CURRENTLY AGAINST THE LAW.

"They're already doing a lot to draw people downtown."

KAREN ALLEGRETTI IS THE OWNER OF MARKET EARTH, AN ART SHOP AND BOUTIQUE.

SHE SAYS AN ENTERTAINMENT DISTRICT WOULD BE GREAT --

"Certainly brings a lot of people out."

IF IT'S DONE THE RIGHT WAY.

"I DON'T PARTICULARLY THINK THAT IT'S GOOD ALL THE TIME."

AND NOT EVERYONE AGREES ON ALL OF THE RULES --

SOME BUSINESSES WANT TO GET RID OF THE AGE RESTRICTION AT BARS AND CLUBS TO ALLOW 18 TO 20 YEAR OLDS.

AND THERE ARE NOISE AND SAFETY CONCERNS ON ALL SIDES -

"It's very similar I think to any community that wants to be a destination."

JIM PETERS IS THE PRESIDENT OF CALIFORNIA BASED RESPONSIBLE HOSPITALITY INSTITUTE --

HIS BUSINESS HAS CONSULTED SEVERAL CITIES ABOUT THEIR NIGHTLIFE -- INCLUDING PITTSBURGH, TAMPA, AND SOON, EVEN LAS VEGAS.

HE'S BEEN HIRED BY A GROUP OF BUSINESSES CALLED THE "RIVER DISTRICT ALLIANCE" TO LOOK AT DOWNTOWN FORT MYERS.

"What we do often is just share how other cities have been confronted with similar challenges and what they've done."

IT WILL BE TWO MONTHS BEFORE HE'S IN FORT MYERS.

BUSINESS OWNERS HOPE HE COMES WITH GOOD IDEAS. Return to index of stories...

A BIG DEBATE ON LITTLE GASPARILLA ISLAND TONIGHT.

HOMEOWNERS DON'T WANT TO BE FORCED TO PAY TO HOOK UP TO THE COUNTY WATERLINE; WHEN THE WATER THEY HAVE IS PERFECTLY FINE.

AND AS NBC 2'S CHRIS GILMORE FOUND OUT COMMISSIONS ARE EQUALLY BEFUDDLED. Return to index of stories...

LITTLE GASPARILLA ISLAND SEWER DEBATE-PKG

"This whole thing is just ridiculous."

KATHLEEN STOKES COLLECTS RAIN WATER AND FILTERS IT FOR DRINKING AND WASHING.

SHE'S ONE OF MANY HOMEOWNERS ON GASPARILLA ISLAND WHO IS COMPLETELY SATISFIED WITH HER WATER SYSTEM.

THAT'S WHY SHE'S FRUSTRATED THAT SHE'S BEING FORCED TO HOOKUP TO A WATER UTILITY PIPELINE.

COMMISSIONERS WERE EQUALLY CONFUSED.

"It seems to me if it's not broke then why fix it.I don't see any of them, I'm not sure where they stand health wise, but I dont' see any green people out there or anyone that seems seriously ill"

ACCORDING TO CHARLOTTE'S CURRENT COMPREHENSIVE PLAN, URBAN AREAS CAN BE REQUIRED TO CONNECT TO COUNTY WATER LINES.

LITTLE GASPARILLA UTILITIES, A PUBLIC UTILITY SERVING 360 CUSTOMERS, SAYS ITS A GOOD WAY TO LOWER RATES.

"I was in shock the only way that these rates will drop is off of this mandatory water hookup and it's my responsibility to run this utility in the best interest of the customers."

BUT MANY ISLAND RESIDENTS DON'T WANT TO BE CUSTOMERS.

"The residents here on little Gasparilla Island swear by the quality of the water that comes out of these wells and cisterns and say it's cleaner than you can find anywhere else."

LITTLE GASPARILLA MAY BE EXEMPT FROM THE MANDATE BECAUSE IT IS A BARRIER ISLAND AND TECHNICALLY NOT IN AN URBAN SERVICE AREA.

THE HOOKUP FEE TO THE WATER PIPELINE IS 45-HUNDRED DOLLARS.

ON TOP OF THAT NEW CUSTOMERS WILL HAVE TO PAY 120 DOLLARS A MONTH, FEES RESIDENTS SAY ARE RIDICULOUS.

"This is America and we don't feel like we should have to connect when w e feel like we already have superior water and it's cost effective and it's environmentally effective."

TODAY COMMISSIONERS TABLED THE DISCUSSION; SAYING THEY'LL WAIT FOR MORE INFORMATION BEFORE MAKING A DECISION.
