THIS HAS REALLY CHANGED THE MOOD ON THE ISLAND TODAY. EVERYONE KNOWS WHAT HAPPENED AND THEY ALL HAVE THOUGHTS ABOUT IT BECAUSE THIS REALLY DOES AFFECT ALL OF US AND MAKES US THINK TWICE ABOUT BEING OUT IN A STORM.

SOMETHING WE'RE HEARING A LOT OUT HERE: COULD WARNINGS OR ALERT SIRENS HAVE PREVENTED THIS?

NOW, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER PEOPLE CHOOSE TO STAY ON THE SAND OR NOT DURING A STORM, BOTH TOWN LEADERS AND MOST RESIDENTS WE SPOKE WITH SEEM TO THINK IT WOULD HELP.

IN FACT, THE SAFETY COMMITTEE ON THE ISLAND HAS BEEN TRYING TO GET SIRENS INSTALLED FOR MONTHS NOW.

:00-:06 Al Durrett, Fort Myers Beach Public Safety Committee "There's not enough done to prevent what happened yesterday."

IF CITY COUNCIL DECIDES TO INSTALL THE DETECTION EQUIPMENT IN SEPTEMBER, I'M TOLD IT WOULD COST ABOUT $130,000 AND WOULD COVER *ALL* OF FORT MYERS BEACH. AFTER THAT, IT WOULD BE A QUESTION OF WHERE THAT MONEY WOULD COME FROM.

BUT GUYS - THERE'S STILL THE QUESTION ABOUT WHETHER THIS WOULD REALLY GET PEOPLE OFF THE BEACH OR NOT. OR IF IT WOULD EVEN BE ENFORCED.

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

The storms will get a later start compared to yesterday, but plan on another round of showers and storms over Southwest Florida as we travel through this Wednesday afternoon.

As we often see this time of year, a few of today's storms may be intense with frequent cloud to ground lightning, torrential rain, and gusty winds.

Rainfall totals could easily reach 2-3 inches in the areas that get caught under one of the bigger downpours.

Before the stormy weather starts to build in, temperatures will peak in the low to mid 90s for most of the area.

Looking ahead toward the end of the week and into the weekend, the coverage of afternoon storms will decrease to around 30% and highs will be in the lower 90s.

In fact, the end of the weekend may end up being relatively dry but hot with highs back in the mid 90s. Return to index of stories...

DEVELOPING RIGHT NOW AT FOUR.

THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IS EXTENDING THE GROUNDING OF ALL U-S FLIGHTS IN AND OUT OF ISRAEL'S BUSIEST INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT.

THE BAN WAS ONLY SUPPOSED TO LAST 24 HOURS AND WAS DUE TO BE LIFTED TODAY.

THE FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION IS STILL ASSESSING THE DANGER OF ROCKET ATTACKS.

BUT SECRETARY OF STATE JOHN KERRY MANAGED TO FLY TO ISRAEL TODAY.

JAY GRAY HAS MORE INSIGHT. Return to index of stories...

NO FLY ISRAEL-PKG

FOR THE SECOND STRAIGHT DAY. THE FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION HAS GROUNDED FLIGHTS TO TEL AVIV -- AMID CONCERNS ABOUT ROCKET ATTACKS IN THE REGION.

"as the situation continues to evolve we will adjust our guidance accordingly. but for the time being it is what it is."

AT LEAST 31 CARRIERS FROM THE U-S, EUROPE, AND ASIA HAVE CANCELED FLIGHTS INTO BEN GURION INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT A DAY AFTER A ROCKET LAUNCHED FROM THE GAZA STRIP LANDED ABOUT A MILE FROM THE FACILITY.

IT'S THE FIRST SINCE 19-91 DURING THE GULF WAR. THAT AIRLINES AND AGENCIES HAVE INSTITUTED THESE TYPES OF CANCELLATIONS.

"We're not really in a position to judge whether the security threat was large enough, or not substantial enough. We think it's just important to be safe."

OFFICIALS WITH THE AIRPORT INSIST. IT IS SAFE.

"Ben Gurion airport is the safety place in earth, is the safety place in Israel."

FORMER NEW YORK MAYOR MICHAEL BLOOMBERG AGREES.

BLOOMBERG FLEW TO TEL AVIV ON EL AL -AN ISRAELI AIRLINE- TO PROTEST THE BAN.

BUT AMERICAN CARRIERS SAY A CHANGE IN THEIR FLIGHT PLANS WILL ONLY COME WITH A CHANGE IN CONDITIONS ON THE GROUND.

"we're going to need concrete information from our government that lets us draw an independent conclusion and keeping with our much higher duty of care that it's going to be safe for passengers and our employees."

SAFETY THAT CONTINUES TO BE IN QUESTION - ACROSS THE REGION.

IS YOUR HEARTBURN TAKING YOUR BREATH AWAY? DOCTORS FIND THAT PEOPLE WITH ASTHMA ARE TWICE AS LIKELY TO ALSO SUFFER FROM gastroesophageal reflux disease OR GERD.

DR. SAGAR NAIK/PULMONOLOGIST

RUNS:

2:26 We have never realized his before. But gastroesophageal reflux disease, which is basically heart burn acid from the stomach coming up the food pipe, spilling up the throat sometimes spilling into the lungs, can cause a tremendous amount of aggravation to asthma like symptoms.

EXPERTS AREN'T EXACTLY SURE HOW THE TWO ARE CONNECTED, OR WHICH ONE COMES FIRST. BUT IT IS OFTEN A FACTOR IN DIAGNOSING ADULT ONSET ASTHMA.

DR. SAGAR NAIK/PULMONOLOGIST

WHEN HURRICANE FORCE WIND TAKES AIM AT A HOME.

nat snd control room "Increasing wind speed to 100 miles an hour."

.IT DOESN'T TAKE MUCH FOR IT TO BEGIN TO FALL APART.

AT JUST 81 MILES PER HOUR, THIS MANUFACTURED HOME STARTS TO FAIL, AND AS THE WIND INCREASES TO 100 MILES PER HOUR, THE ROOF RIPS OFF. WATCH IT AGAIN, IN SLOW MOTION.

ENGINEERS AT THE INSURANCE INSTITUTE FOR BUSINESS & HOME SAFETY SAY IT'S NOT THE MANUFACTURED HOME THAT'S THE PROBLEM, IT'S THE CARPORT ATTACHED TO THE HOME THAT CREATED THE OPENING THAT CAUSED THE ROOF TO FLY OFF.

nat snd -wind noise-

WHEN HURRICANE CHARLEY HIT FLORIDA'S GULF COAST IN 2004, INSPECTORS FOUND 80 PERCENT OF THE DAMAGE TO MANUFACTURED HOMES WAS BECAUSE OF THOSE ADD-ONS, LIKE CARPORTS OR PATIOS.

SOT Julie Rochman/President & CEO/Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety:52 -:57

"We see wind getting underneath those structures and pushing up. Those forces are tremendous and they not only tear off that attached structure, they can tear open the house."

TEST ENGINEERS HERE HAVE DISCOVERED TRADITIONALLY BUILT HOMES IN 100 MILE PER HOUR WINDS CAN BE JUST AS VULNERABLE.

BUT ON TUESDAY, PROOF THAT IT IS POSSIBLE TO BUILD A STRONGER ADDITION FOR THE MANUFACTURED HOMES.

SOT Kerry Sanders

"On this side, you've got a post right up against the house."

SOT Dr. Tim Reinhold/Chief Engineer/Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety 1:18 - 1:24

"What it should do is hold the roof of the carport down next to the house, so we don't put the full force of the wind into the house connection."

THAT PROPERLY BUILT CARPORT HAD NO PROBLEM IN 100 MILE PER HOUR WINDS.

SOT Kerry Sanders

"This carport held."

SOT Tim Reinhold

"It really did. With the bracing we put in there, it took the full force of the wind."

IS IT PROMOTING ALCOHOLISM OR SAVING TIME?

ALCOHOL DELIVERY-PKG

LET'S JUST CALL IT LIKE IT IS, AMERICANS LIKE THINGS 'NOW' RIGHT ALONG WITH CONVENIENCE. IT SEEMS THE DAYS OF STANDING IN LONG LINES WAITING TO BUY ALCOHOLIC ARE OVER.

"It's sort of an on demand world that we live in."

BECAUSE THERE'S AN APP FOR THAT

"Drizly is a mobile application that allows smart phone users to purchase their favorite beer wine and liquor."

MATTHEW ERLEY, GENERAL MANAGER FOR THE DRIZLY APP SAYS CUSTOMERS CAN USE THE APP DURING THE TIME THE PARTNERING LIQUOR STORE IS OPEN. SO THAT MEANS SALES FROM ARGONAUTS ENDS AT MIDNIGHT

"Right now it says we're not meeting the $20 minimum so we'll have to add more."

ALONG WITH THE 20 DOLLAR MINIMUM PURCHASE.ERLEY SAYS THERE'S A 5 DOLLAR DELIVERY CHARGE. BUT JUST LIKE IN A LIQUOR STORE, BEFORE THE PURCHASE IS MADE, THE CUSTOMER MUST PROVE THROUGH A DRIVERS LICENSES THAT THEY'RE 21 OR OLDER. BUT WHEN THE DELIVERY ARRIVED--ERLEY SAYS THERE'S ANOTHER LAYER OF SECURITY

"It allows our driver to scan the id and it let's them know if the individual is over 21 and if it's a valid id."

BUT EVEN IF EVERYTHING CHECKS OUT, ADDICTION THERAPISTS LIKE MARC COULTER SAY THE CONVENIENCE FOR SOME COULD BE A CONCERN FOR OTHERS

"Now the store is coming to us and we can drink wherever we want so I do think that it increases the possibility that we can drink more and more often and more frequently."

BUT WHATEVER THE REASON PEOPLE DECIDE TO USE THE APP IT IS AVAILABLE IN DENVER. AND SOME PEOPLE THINK IT MIGHT EVEN DETER DRUNK DRIVING.

"Convenient for the people and a lot safer for drivers on the road." Return to index of stories...
