FIRST WEATHER-STC

Scattered storms will roam through Southwest Florida for the balance of the afternoon and evening, and a few of today's storms may be intense with frequent cloud-to-ground lightning, heavy rain and gusty winds.

The storms will be scattered in nature with the highest storm coverage expected over our inland communities, but even our coastal zones may see a passing storm before the evening is done.

After topping out in the low to mid 90s this afternoon, temperatures will settle into the mid 70s overnight into early Thursday morning.

We'll end up back in the low to mid 90s for Thursday afternoon with a blend of sunshine and clouds, and expect scattered storms to fire up during the heat of the day and into the evening.

Storms will be possible anywhere tomorrow, but the highest rain chances will be across our inland communities.

Expect a slight downward trend in rain chances for the upcoming weekend, but we'll still have enough moisture in place for some isolated afternoon storms.

Temperatures will continue peaking in the low to mid 90s during the day and cooling down into the mid 70s at night. Return to index of stories...

SHE'S EXPECTED TO RECOVER.

HE'S IN CRITICAL CONDITION.

A CLOSE RELATIVE TOLD US CHELSEA AND ZAC ARE DATING -- AND WILCOX WAS A CLOSE FAMILY FRIEND.

NAT bolt lightning

ROCKING ESTERO ISLAND IN THE MIDDLE OF THE AFTERNOON - A SEVERE LIGHTNING STORM - ONE PEOPLE WILL NEVER FORGET.

Alice Lynch, Fort Myers Beach "It sounded like things were getting hit it was just that loud."

NAT sirens

Robert Gustafson, Witness "The water was turning red right there. it was really terrible."

PARAMEDICS RUSH TO THREE PEOPLE LAYING ON THE SAND - ONE DEAD - TWO OTHERS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL.

ONE DAY LATER ON FORT MYERS BEACH - THE SAND LOOKS NORMAL AGAIN. BUT WHAT HAPPENED HERE IS ENGRAVED IN PEOPLES' MINDS.

Bob Saffort, Fort Myers Beach "The kids had no busy being where they were. but regardless, it was. it was terrible."

Leslie White, Visiting from Indiana "The majority of people are not checking the weather when they're out here. they have no idea what's going to happen."

. THAT'S WHY PEOPLE SAY LIGHTNING PROTECTION COULD HELP.

Leslie White "I think it's beneficial to avoid a situation like yesterday. I mean you can't really put a price on that."

Bill Safford "If the range on it is good, then absolutely."

IT'S SOMETHING THE ISLAND'S PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE HAS BEEN PUSHING FOR.

All Durrett, Public Safety Committee "There's not enough done to prevent what happened yesterday."

IF APPROVED IN SEPTEMBER, EQUIPMENT WOULD COVER THE ENTIRE ISLAND - DETECTING LIGHTNING UP TO 10 MILES AWAY, WARNING PEOPLE TO GO INSIDE.

Al Durrett "People don't realize how bad southwest florida is for lightning."

THAT'S JUST ONE OF MANY IDEAS.

WHAT MAY BE COMMON SENSE FOR SOME PEOPLE LEAVES OTHERS BELIEVING COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS. AND COULD BE FIXED BY SIMPLE AS SIMPLE AS A SIGN.

Ada Mullins, Ohio "I mean you see signs for stringrays, but you don't see anything about lightning." Return to index of stories...

HELPED SAVE A WOMAN'S LIFE IN COLLIER COUNTY.

THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE SAYS HER PLEA LAST WEEK WAS THEIR FIRST CONFIRMED EMERGENCY THROUGH THEIR NEW TEXT TO 911 PROGRAM.

Commander Bill Rule, CCSO Communications Dept.

04:20-:26

There are certain circumstances where you may not have a voice and your voice becomes your fingers and you text in the message and send it to us.

IN THIS CASE, THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE SAYS DISPATCHERS RECEIVED AT LEAST THREE 911 CALLS FROM THE VICTIM'S ADDRESS.

BUT INVESTIGATORS SAY NOBODY WAS ON THE OTHER LINE.

WHEN THEY CALLED BACK, THEY SAY HEARD MOANING.

REPORTS SHOW SHE WAS SEMI-CONSCIOUS SUFFERING FROM SOME SORT OF MEDICAL EMERGENCY.

Commander Bill Rule, CCSO Communications Dept.

02:46

We knew we actually had a very verifiable incident because the text to 911 was sent to us. Somebody actually had to type it in. Sometimes an unverified 911 can come in because of phone problems.

WE FIRST TOLD YOU ABOUT TEXT TO 911 IN JUNE.

SINCE THEN THE PROGRAM HAS EXPANDED TO NEW CARRIERS THROUGHOUT COLLIER.

The Naples Police Department says you can now text 911 within city limits if you have Verizon. And the sheriff's office tells me throughout Collier on Verizon or T-Mobile.
