FIRST WEATHER-WX ANI

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

HOT AND HUMID WITH A FEW PM STORMS

Another hot, humid day is in store for Southwest Florida. Temperatures will warm into the lower 90s, but the heat index will soar back to near 100 degrees. We'll get to see some sunshine through the first half of the day. Then as the sea breeze comes in this afternoon, we'll pick up a few showers and storms. There is drier air working its way into Southwest Florida in the mid and upper levels of our atmosphere. That drier air will help to keep the coverage of rain a bit on the lower side today. Coverage will be fairly similar to yesterday. Then for Friday through the weekend and the start of next week coverage will be even lower, with only isolated afternoon storms expected. Highs will stay in the lower 90s and lows will be in the mid to upper 70s for the next 7 days.

In the tropics there are no concerns at this time with no development expected in the next 2 - 5 days. Return to index of stories...

WARNING SIRENS PROMPTING THIS FRANTIC SCENE LATER IN THE DAY.

ACCORDING TO A STATEMENT, THE F-A-A SAYS IT WORKED WITH THE U.S. GOVERNMENT TO "ASSESS THE SECURITY SITUATION IN ISRAEL" AND REVIEW "BOTH SIGNIFICANT NEW INFORMATION AND MEASURES THE GOVERNMENT OF ISRAEL IS TAKING TO MITIGATE POTENTIAL RISKS TO CIVIL AVIATION."

AND IN BETWEEN ALL THE VIOLENCE INVOLVING SEVERAL RECENT HIGH-PROFILE PLANE INCIDENTS, YOU MIGHT BE ASKING YOURSELF. IS IT SAFE TO FLY.

THIS WEEK THERE WAS AN EMERGENCY LANDING IN OHIO.

A PASSENGER PLANE CRASHED IN TAIWAN.

AND THAT MALAYSIAN AIRLINES PLANE WAS SHOT DOWN OVER UKRAINE ONE WEEK AGO TODAY.

PLUS, OF COURSE, NOW THE AIR ALGERIE FLIGHT THAT CRASHED EARLIER TODAY.

YOU MIGHT BE INCLINED TO STAY AWAY FROM THE SPECIFIC AIRLINES FROM THESE STORIES.

BUT THAT MIGHT NOT BE THE MOST LOGICAL THING TO DO.

THE BLOG "FIVE THIRTY EIGHT" LOOKED THROUGH 30 YEARS OF FLIGHT RECORDS.

IT FOUND THAT IN FLYING AN AIRLINE THAT JUST EXPERIENCED A CRASH. YOUR RISK OF BEING INVOLVED IN ANOTHER CRASH IS ACTUALLY VERY LOW.

AND AFTER A DISASTER. THE RISK OF FLYING ON THAT SPECIFIC AIRLINE STILL DOES NOT REALLY INCREASE.

DATA *DID SHOW THAT AIRLINES IN MORE DEVELOPED NATIONS HAVE FEWER CRASHES.

THE AIRLINES WITH THE FEWEST NUMBER OF INCIDENTS, ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES INCLUDE: SOUTHWEST AIRLINES, CATHAY PACIFIC, AND LUFTHANSA.

THEY TRACK THE CIRCULATION IN AND AROUND THE RIP CURRENTS.

S/ Spencer Rogers/North Carolina Sea Grant 1:01-1:06

"The two things we want to measure in particular are how far offshore the rip currents will push somebody and if there are circulation cells that we see from the west coast, how long it'll take someone to get back to shallow water."

S/ Lauren Rautenkranz/Reporting 1:15-1:20

"All of the drifters are numbered to keep track of the data. They're weighted at the bottom and made with a piping material with foam material at the top to help them stay afloat. Now, as far as the data-logging goes.there's a waterproof container at the top and inside. a GPS system to track the location and the timing of the rip currents."

AS FOR BEACHGOERS, LIKE MARITONI AND DARIEN, DR. RIP AND OTHER RESEARCHERS SAY KNOWING WHAT TO DO IF YOU EVER GET CAUGHT IN A RIP CURRENT IS MOST IMPORTANT.

"I'd try to swim forward, but first I'd try to get out of it."

"Swim sideways and try to get to shore."

"If you find yourself caught in a rip just relax. It sounds crazy, but the rip isn't going to kill you. panic will kill you." Return to index of stories...

WOMEN HEART ATTACKS-CLIP OC CG OC

A NEW STUDY SHOWS HEART ATTACKS CAN BE DEADLIEST FOR YOUNG WOMEN.

RESEARCHERS FOUND THAT NOT ONLY WERE YOUNG WOMEN MORE LIKELY TO BE SICKER THAN YOUNG MEN ONCE THEY ARRIVED AT A HOSPITAL. THEY WERE ALSO MORE LIKELY TO DIE THERE.

YALE RESEARCHERS TRACKED WOMEN AGES 30 TO 54.

THEY SAY THE POINT HERE. IS NOT TO IGNORE SYMPTOMS THAT COULD SUGGEST A HEART ATTACK. LIKE CHEST PAIN, SHORTNESS OF BREATH, FATIGUE AND NAUSEA.

RESEARCHERS SAY ALL OF THESE THINGS LEAD TO A DELAY IN RECOGNIZING SYMPTOMS, A DELAYED DIAGNOSIS, AND A DELAY IN TREATMENT STRATEGIES BECAUSE WOMEN ARE COMING IN TO THE HOSPITAL LATER. Return to index of stories...

MSNBC/"ANDREA MITCHELL REPORTS"

3.BEN RHODES

DEPUTY NATIONAL SECURITY ADVISOR

With the world's eyes glued to a pair of international crises -- in Ukraine and the Middle East -- President Obama is taking heat for sticking to his travel plans.

"Palestinian protests."

. greeted by protests even as he attends series of political fundraisers during a three-day West Coast swing.

"Bottom line is: President Obama should be showing leadership not raising money. / Symbolism is essential to leadership."

Even some Democrats have questioned the White House's approach.

"I'm not going to tell the president what to do, but I think the world would very much respect his increased attention on this matter."

Sensitive to sending the wrong message: the White House passed on an invitation to appear on Jimmy Kimmel this week -- but top advisors defend Mr. Obama's ability to juggle multiple responsibilities at once.

"The fact that he's doing some events on the West Coast related to fundraising takes nothing away from his ability to get on the phone with a foreign leader, if he needs to."

The President is also being challenged for failing to stand up more aggressively to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

TIME magazine's new headline reads: "Cold War II: The West is Losing Putin's Dangerous Game."

"I don't understand what Vladimir Putin is supposed to be winning. / He's got to be the most isolated leader in the world, as we speak."

Still -- for President Obama, raising money for Democrats during a time of crisis carries a big political risk:

"The more he does it, the greater the risk that he looks detached or too partisan, that he's really not doing the job he was elected for." Return to index of stories...
