DEVELOPING TONIGHT IN NAPLES: CREWS ARE WORKING TO CLEAN UP A CHEMICAL SPILL THAT COULD FLOW INTO THE GORDON RIVER AND NAPLES BAY.

CITY OFFICIALS TELL NBC 2 A CONTRACTOR WAS WORKING ON A ROOF--

ON HORSESHOE DRIVE TWO DAYS AGO--

WHEN ABOUT EIGHT GALLONS OF AN ACRYLIC PAINT COATING WASHED OFF IN THE RAIN.

THEN IT HAPPENED AGAIN, THIS MORNING!

RAIN NAT

A RAIN STORM THIS MORNING MADE AN ALREADY TRICKY PROBLEM EVEN WORSE.

13:25 The rain came all over again while we were here and here it comes pouring off the roof, down into our drains once again.

CITY OF NAPLES HARBOR MASTER ROGER JACOBSEN SAYS THE CONTRACTOR, TIDWELL'S URETHANE SERVICES WENT BACK TO WORK, BUT THE EFFORT WAS WASHED AWAY.FOR THE SECOND TIME IN THREE DAYS.

CITY PUMP NAT

THE CITY HELPED OUT WHILE WAITING ON ANOTHER COMPANY TO ARRIVE.

15:45 we're expecting a couple of containers to show up on site and we're going to back fill into those containers and the disposal company will get rid of it at that point.

THE MAN IN THE PURPLE IS DAVID TIDWELL, THE OWNER OF THE COMPANY. HE WOULDN'T GO ON CAMERA, BUT TOLD NBC-2 THAT THEY ARE FROM OUT OF TOWN AND WEREN'T FAMILIAR WITH THE WEATHER IN NAPLES. HE SAYS ON TUESDAY HE SAW ONLY A 30 PERCENT CHANCE OF RAIN, BUT ADMITTED IT WAS A BAD DECISION TO TRY AND CONTINUE THE PROJECT TODAY.

1457 we don't want that kind of water going into our bay we want pure rain water and that's all.

THAT MEANS A COSTLY CLEANUP.

TIDWELL EXPECTS IT TO RUN INTO THE TENS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS, BUT SAYS HE'S FOOTING THE BILL. Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.After some morning activity, scattered showers and storms developed mainly in inland areas Thursday afternoon, with highs holding in the low 90s. The showers will diminish this evening, with some isolated activity possible in the Urban Corridor, as temps hold in the 70s. We'll see quiet conditions overnight, with lows in the mid 70s.

More dry air works into the region Friday, again keeping the storms widely scattered. Just like Thursday some morning activity may come ashore in coastal areas, but most of the morning will be dry. Scattered showers and storms will develop as we move into the afternoon, with highs in the low 90s.

The weekend is still looking fairly dry, with just a few widely scattered PM storms possible. Highs both Saturday and Sunday will be in the low 90s.

We will be watching more dry air work into the area, which will likely reduce rain chances for next week. Temps are expected to be on the hot side, with highs in the mid 90s possible.

TROPICAL UPDATE

With Tropical Depression Two history, things are still fairly quiet in the Gulf, Caribbean Sea and the open waters of the Atlantic. We are beginning to see stronger tropical waves developing in western Africa, but those are at least a week away from becoming an issue.

No major activity is expected in the tropics over the next 5 days. Return to index of stories...
