TADDEO THOUGHT THAT FIRST CALL WAS ABOUT THE HISPANIC COMMUNITY. BUT IT WAS ABOUT HER.

THE MIAMI-DADE DEMOCRATIC PARTY CHAIR WOULD SOON BE ON THE TICKET WITH THE FORMER GOVERNOR. WHO NOT LONG AGO, HAD BEEN A REPUBLICAN.

"LAUREN: What did you think of him six years ago? TADDEO: You know I always admired him because although I am or was the party chair in Miami Dade county there are times I don't always agree with my party and I think that we need to do what's right in our gut."

TADDEO WAS BORN IN COLOMBIA TO AN AMERICAN FATHER AND COLOMBIAN MOTHER. SHE WENT TO COLLEGE IN ALABAMA. AND A STUDENT ELECTION THERE STILL STAYS WITH HER.

"I put posters all over the school that said Annette Taddeo for secretary and the day of the election they said Annette Taddeo for deportation it was crossed out."

IF ELECTED SHE WOULD BE FLORIDA'S SECOND HISPANIC LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR, BEHIND THE CURRENT ONE. SHE'S RUN FOR CONGRESS, BUT LOST. AND HAS NEVER HELD PUBLIC ELECTED OFFICE.

"LAUREN: Why should voters be comfortable with you making a statewide office your first one? TADDEO: I think they should they should feel very comfortable because I'm one of them."

SHE'S TALKING ABOUT BEING A WORKING MOM. AND A BUSINESS OWNER. BUT SHE'S ALSO GEARING UP TO BECOME PART OF AN ALREADY HEATED CAMPAIGN.

A CONTRACTOR HIRED BY CHARLOTTE COUNTY IS GETTING PAID TO DO NOTHING.

BIRDS NESTED IN PORT CHARLOTTE WATERWAYS AND AS LONG AS THE WILDLIFE STAYS, THE CREWS CAN'T REMOVE THE ALGAE.

NBC-2'S CHRIS GILMORE LEARNED THE COUNTY MUST PAY THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS A DAY, AND THERE'S NOTHING THEY CAN DO ABOUT IT. Return to index of stories...

"They've actually done some good but it still has a long way to go."

PORT CHARLOTTE RESIDENT JOYCE BURKE HAS LIVED NEAR SUNSHINE LAKE AND SUNRISE WATERWAY FOR MORE THAN 20 YEARS.

FOLLOWING SERIOUS POLLUTION ISSUES IN 2009, SHE SAYS THE WATER QUALITY ISN'T ANYWHERE NEAR AS GOOD AS IT USED TO BE.

"Oh God no! I'm sorry that wasn't nice, no."

THE COUNTY ACKNOWLEDGED THE PROBLEM AND CONTRACTED THE COMPANY PRO-LIME IN 2013 TO FIX IT.

FOR ALMOST 2-MILLION DOLLARS, THE COMPANY AGREED TO CLEAR 100% OF THE CAT TAILS.

"And so what the contractor asked for and the county agreed to was that we would complete payment on the original piece of the contract."

BUT THERE WAS A PROBLEM -- PRO LIME CAME BACK TO THE COUNTY REQUESTING MORE MONEY -- THE AMOUNT OF WORK THAT NEEDED TO BE DONE WAS MUCH MORE THAN ORIGINALLY THOUGHT.

AS AN AMENDED CONTRACT WAS AGREED UPON.

NATS OF BIRDS??

. BLUE HERONS MOVED IN. BECAUSE THE PROTECTED SPECIES HAS NESTED IN THE AREA, THE CLEARING PROCESS HAS STOPPED. CONTRACT WORKERS CAN'T GET WITHIN 300 FEET OF THEM.

"It's extremely frustrating you've heard comments from commissioners, you can tell the level of frustration they have."

AND AS PART OF THE NEW CONTRACT, THE COUNTY IS COMPENSATING THE COMPANY 52-HUNDRED DOLLARS A DAY. THAT'S FOR LEAVING THEIR EQUIPMENT ON SITE WHILE THEY WAIT FOR THE BIRDS TO LEAVE.

THEY SAY THAT'S LESS EXPENSIVE THAN MOVING THE EQUIPMENT AWAY AND BRINGING IT BACK.

IT'S AN ADDED 5 HUNDRED 27 THOUSAND TAXPAYER DOLLARS -- ON TOP OF THE CONTRACTED PRICE.

ONCE ALL IT SAID AND DONE, THIS ALREADY EXPENSIVE PROJECT WILL DOUBLE IN PRICE TO NEARLY 4-MILLION DOLLARS.

"They were paid the works not being done so they're being paid not to do it, until whenever."

UNTIL THE LAST BLUE HERON NEST IS FREE OF HATCHLINGS.

FIRST WEATHER-WX CENTER

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.We're on track to see more passing showers and storms around through our Saturday, but there's actually a stretch of drier weather ahead in the not too distant future.

For the first half of today, plan on the possibility of a passing downpour, particularly for areas along U.S. 41 back toward the coast.

An onshore flow will develop by the mid afternoon, keeping the bulk of the showers and storms along and east of I-75 for the late afternoon and evening hours.

Outside of a few passing downpours, expect a mix of sun and clouds with temperatures peaking in the low to mid 90s during the afternoon.

By the second half of the weekend, we start transitioning to a much quieter weather pattern, but we'll leave the door open for some isolated downpours.

Monday and Tuesday look mainly dry and sunny with highs up to the mid 90s.

Moisture increases a little by Wednesday, so expect to see some scattered rain and a few storms around by the middle of the week.

Tropical Update

We're tracking a couple of tropical waves in the far eastern Atlantic, and one may eventually organize into a tropical entity by next week. Even if we see development down the road, it's likely going to be a slow process, and it's still far, far way from Southwest Florida. Return to index of stories...

THE NUMBER OF JOINT REPLACEMENT SURGERIES IS ONLY EXPECTED TO RISE IN THE COMING YEARS.

WHEN YOU PAIR AN AGING POPULATION WITH AN ACTIVE POPULATION- YOU HAVE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE WHO WANT TO ENJOY LIFE WITHOUT LIMITS.

WITH HIGH EXPECTATIONS MILLIONS OF AMERICANS ARE BUCKLING UNDER THE PRESSURE. AT LEAST THEIR JOINTS ARE. WHETHER IT'S TRIGGERED BY AN OLD INJURY OR ARTHRITIS, ACHY KNEES AND HIPS BECOME A HUGE PROBLEM.

DR. GEORGE MARKOVICH/ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

Taking action early helps people hang on to their joints. Interventions like physical therapy, injections or arthroscopic procedures may slow the degeneration. But waiting too long to try surgery can also have a downside.

DR. GEORGE MARKOVICH/ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON

RUNS:

12:40: As far as joint replacement that should be the last resort. But if you wait and wait and wait you're not going to do as well. So it's really kind of a balancing act.

HERE'S SOME SIGNS IT MAY BE TIME TO CONSIDER SURGERY:

DR. GEORGE MARKOVICH/ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON
