GOOD MORNING-2SHOT PUSH

GOOD SUNDAY MORNING EVERYONE! GREAT TO HAVE YOU WITH US THIS TODAY.

I'M STACEY DEFFENBAUGH.

AND I'M CLIFTON FRENCH. WE BEGIN WITH THE WEATHER ON THIS SUNDAY MORNING.

METEROLOGIST JASON DUNNING STANDING BY TO LET US KNOW WHAT WE CAN EXCECT TODAY. Return to index of stories...

FIRST WEATHER-WX WALL

Our rain chances will start to free fall later today, but we'll still have some spotty downpours to track through our Sunday morning, particularly for areas close to the coast.

Some of this rian may be quite heavy and slow moving, meaning we could see the rain totals add up quickly.

Aside from a few downpours and storms around this morning, expect a mostly sunny and warm start to the day.

The highest rain chances will shift deeper inland through the day, so most of us over Charlotte, Lee, and Collier County should see a relatively dry and sunny afternoon. However, for Glades and Hendry County, we'll likely have a few storms around this afternoon.

Temperatures will be quite hot again today with highs aimed for the low to mid 90s.

As we start the upcoming week, we're in store for a little break from the rainy season pattern. Monday and Tuesday will be mostly dry and sunny with temperatures peaking in the low to mid 90s during the afternoon. A few spots of rain may develop in the morning, but all in all, our rain chances will stay pretty low.

Moisture starts building back into Southwest Florida by Wednesday, and a few showers may even develop as early as Wednesday morning.

TROPICAL UPDATE

A disorganized tropical wave in the far eastern Atlantic may have a better chance of developing in a few days as it moves west into the open Atlantic. The National Hurricane Center gives this feature a 40% chance of developing within the next five days.

NEW DETAILS THIS MORNING ABOUT SAFETY AND SECURITY MEASURES IN AVIATION.

WE'RE TOLD GLOBAL AVIATION LEADERS WILL MEET IN MONTREAL THIS WEEK TO TALK ABOUT A PLAN TO ADRESS THESE ISSUES --

THIS COMES AFTER SEVERAL CRASHES -- INCLUDING THE MALAYSIA JET THAT WAS SHOT DOWN OVER A WAR RAVAGED EASTERN UKRAIN.

A U.N. AGENCY WILL HOST THE MEETING ON TUESDAY.

Aviation officials to meet on plane shot down

WASHINGTON - An aviation official says global aviation leaders will meet in Montreal THIS week to initiate discussions on a plan to address safety and security issues raised by the shoot-down of a Malaysia Airlines jet over eastern Ukraine, as well as two other air crashes.

The official said the International Civil Aviation Organization, a U.N. agency, will host the meeting on Tuesday. Other organizations scheduled to participate include the International Air Transport Association, which represents airlines; the Civil Air Navigation Services Organization; and the Airports Council International.

Another meeting is also planned for February. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak about the issue by name.

UNLOCK CELL PHONES-trxOTS

ALL NEW THIS MORNING --

CONGRESS HAS PASSED A BILL THAT MAKES IT LEGAL TO "UNLOCK" CELLPHONES.

UNLOCKING TYPICALLY INVOLVES ENTERING CODES ON THE PHONE.

THE NEW LAW TRUMPS A MOVE BY THE LIBARY OF CONGRESS IN 2012, THAT MADE IT A COPYWRIGHT VIOLATION TO UNLOCK A PHONE WITHOUT PREMISSION.

PRESIDENT OBAMA SAYS HE LOOKS FORWARD TO SIGNING THE NEW LAW.

The law, which President Obama says he looks forward to signing, undoes a move by the Librarian of Congress in 2012. That made it a copyright violation to unlock a phone without the carrier's permission.

The law passed Friday by the House of Representatives makes it legal to unlock phones for personal use at least until the Librarian's next round of rulemaking, next year. The measure was passed earlier by the Senate.

Unlocking typically involves entering codes on the phone. In more difficult cases, the phone needs to be hooked up to a computer to have new software installed. Return to index of stories...

LIGHTNING DETECTORS-trxPKG

SOMETIMES IN PARADISE, DANGER CAN STRIKE WITHOUT WARNING.

ON THURSDAY, A MAN WAS HIT BY LIGHTNING AT CLEARWATER BEACH.AND ON TUESDAY, MOTHER NATURE STRUCK ANOTHER MAN AT FORT MYERS BEACH, KILLING HIM.

SO WHILE SARASOTA COUNTY LIFEGUARDS KEEP AN EYE ON THE SWIMMERS, THEY ALSO KEEP AN EYE ON THE SKY.

"How bad are lightning storms this time of year?

"They're pretty bad, they move in most every afternoon."

CAPTAIN ROY ROUTH WITH THE SARASOTA COUNTY BEACH PATROL HAS HIS LIFEGUARDS USE THESE LIGHTNING DETECTORS WHILE THEY'RE OUT WORKING.

S/ Captain Roy Routh, Sarasota County Beach Patrol:36-:39

"How exactly does it work?"

"It picks up electricity in the air, and as it approaches, it gives us an idea of the range".

THE HANDHELD MACHINES ARE USED AT ALL SARASOTA COUNTY BEACHES, AND THEY COME IN HANDY. ROUTH SAYS EVEN FROM TEN MILES OUT, LIGHTNING CAN BE DANGEROUS, SO THE DETECTORS KEEP THEM IN THE KNOW.

"It starts notifying us when its 20 to 40 miles out, and then it'll start notifying us again when its 8 to 20."

BUT ALONG WITH THE MACHINES, LIFEGUARDS ARE CONSTANTLY MONITORING WEATHER PATTERNS.

IF LIGHTNING IS IN THE AREA, THEY'LL PUT UP DOUBLE RED FLAGS AND EVACUATE THE BEACH. THE SWIMMERS ARE THEN ORDERED TO STAY AWAY FOR AT LEAST 30 MINUTES AFTER THE LIGHTNING IS GONE.

ROUTH WILL ALSO MOVE HIS LIFEGUARDS TO A SAFE PLACE.

"We don't want them in the water during lightning going out to retrieve somebody, we don't want them on the beach."

LIGHTNING CAN VERY QUICKLY RUIN A VACATION, SO THESE LIFEGUARDS USE ALL THE TOOLS THEY CAN TO KEEP THESE BEACH-GOERS PROTECTED. Return to index of stories...
