FIRST WEATHER-WX

LIMITED RAIN CHANCES TODAY

Monday will again be dominated by an onshore wind flow. That means we have the chance for a few showers to move in from the Gulf of Mexico early this morning through the midday time frame. Coverage of rain should remain isolated and located mainly in areas west of Interstate 75, but you will want to note that in your plans, especially if headed to the beaches.

By the afternoon, the impacts of some relatively drier air in the mid-levels of the atmosphere will help to keep much of the region rather dry compared to what is considered normal for a late July day. Any stray rain or thunder that would be able to develop on Monday would most likely be in communities well to the east of the I-75 corridor. The vast majority of us will see mostly sunny skies this afternoon.

Temperatures on Today will range from the upper 80s along the coastal cities like Naples, to the low and mid 90s in Fort Myers and Punta Gorda.

Communities like Lehigh Acres, Immokalee and Golden Gate will have a better opportunity for seeing temperatures top 94 on Monday afternoon.

Tuesday's weather could again be met with a morning shower or two along the coastline, but once again a good chunk of the afternoon should remain rather dry.

Showers and a few thunderstorms return to the forecast by Wednesday with a highs in the lower 90s in the afternoon.

TROPICAL UPDATE

A tropical wave noted on satellite 550 miles southwest of the Cape Verde Islands will be monitored for possible development this week. As of now, the National Hurricane Center is giving this disturbance a 30% chance of development in the next two days. However, the feature is moving into an area of the Atlantic Ocean that is a bit more favorable for storms. Over the next 5 days, there is a 70% chance for this system to develop. We will continue to monitor the situation and bring you updates throughout the week.

Other than the previously mentioned tropical wave, there are no tropical cyclones active in the Gulf of Mexico or Caribbean Sea and none are expected to develop within the next two days. Return to index of stories...

INTERNATIONAL CALLS FOR AN END TO THE VIOLENCE DO NOT APPEAR TO HAVE MADE HEADWAY IN THE MIDDLE EAST.

MIDEAST CRISIS MEETING-PKG

EVEN AS HAMAS SAID IT AGREED TO A U-N MEDIATED CEASE-FIRE OVER THE WEEKEND, ISRAEL CITED "INCESSANT ROCKET FIRE" AS A REASON TO RESTART ITS MILITARY GROUND OPERATION.

"Hamas refused to stop the attacks. Israel agreed to five ceasefire proposals. Hamas rejected or broke all of them -- even the ones that they requested by themselves."

THE UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNCIL HELD ANOTHER EMERGENCY MEETING, OVERNIGHT, ISSUING A PRESIDENTIAL STATEMENT:

"The Security Council expresses strong support. for an immediate and unconditional humanitarian ceasefire."

HAMAS HAD ASKED FOR A MORE STRONGLY-WORDED RESOLUTION.

"The status quo is not sustainable, and to return tot he situation before this aggression is not sustainable. We need to see fundamental changes of the life of our people in the Gaza Strip."

FOR ITS PART, ISRAEL SUGGESTED SUSTAINABLE PEACE COULD ONLY COME THROUGH DEMILITARIZING GAZA.

"I said it, and I'll repeat it again: if it's going to be quiet in Israel, it's going to be quiet in Gaza. It's as simple as it gets."

.BUT AS IT HAS SO OFTEN BEEN SHOWN, ACHIEVING A LASTING PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST IS ANYTHING BUT SIMPLE.

A PRODUCT TO HELP KEEP SHARKS AWAY WHILE YOU'RE IN THE WATER IS NOW BEING SOLD IN FLORIDA.

AN AUSTRALIAN-BASED COMPANY IS BRINGING THE DEVICE -- CALLED A SHARK SHIELD -- TO THE TAMPA BAY AREA

ASHLEY JEFFERY EXPLAINS HOW IT WORKS. Return to index of stories...

THE SHARK SHIELD-PKG

WHEN YOU PLAN YOUR DAY AT THE BEACH -- THE ONLY THINGS ON YOUR MIND ARE THE SAND AND THE WATER.

BUT IF YOU'RE LIKE CHAD CAMPBELL AND PLAN TO DIVE A LITTLE BIT DEEPER --

GREAT WHITE SHARKS MAY ALSO BE ON YOUR MIND.

"They might come in but just close enough to where you could see them then go away and stay on the outer perimeter of us."

THAT'S BECAUSE OF THIS DEVICE CALLED A "SHARK SHIELD."

FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER -- USERS CAN BUY IT FROM IT'S FIRST U-S STORE.

LOCATED RIGHT HERE IN TAMPA BAY.

"You wear this on your ankle and this antenna trails behind you in the water. Inside this antenna we've got two electrodes."

AND THOSE ELECTRODES CREATE AN UNDERWATER ELECTRIC FIELD -- LIKE THE ONE SEEN IN THIS VIDEO.

WHEN A SHARK COMES CLOSE TO SOMEONE WEARING THE SHARK SHIELD -- THE DEVICES CAUSES SPASMS AND KEEPS THE SHARKS AWAY.

"OFFICIALS SAY WHAT'S ALSO INTERESTING ABOUT SHARK SHIELD IS EVEN THOUGH IT REPELS THE SHARKS, IT DOESN'T HURT THEM."

"It doesn't cause any long term damage. It just causes the muscular contraction of their snout. As soon as they're outside of the field, that spasm stops."

AND THAT'S GOOD NEWS FOR WATER LOVERS LIKE CHAD.

HE SAYS HE AND OTHER DIVERS HAVE HAD FAR TOO MANY CLOSE ENCOUNTERS WITH SHARKS WITHOUT THE DEVICE.

BUT NOW THEY FEEL SAFER DIVING TO NEW DEPTHS.

"Well it definitely worked and I'm not getting in the water without it anymore for a safety precaution." Return to index of stories...

WEATHER-WX WALL

!!!NEED WX ANCHOR CG!!!

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

IT'S A QUICK. CHEAP WAY TO QUENCH A THIRST.

"Ah, the Brew Buckit."

RYAN SCHWARZ HAS HELPED CHANGE THE CLASSIC GAME OF FETCH.

"As far as the game in general, it's simple, it's classic. Again, everybody is familiar with how to play it."

SO WITH THE BASICS ALREADY THERE. RYAN ALONG WITH HIS WIFE LAURA AND FRIEND J.R.

STARTED TO THINK.

"So we just started talking about different ideas of what would be a little more fun than the usual stuffed animal."

LAURA WAS ABOUT TO GRAB ON TO AN IDEA. CLEARLY OUTSIDE THE BOX.

"And I just said, what if we did beer?"

SO THE "WHAT IFs" TURNED INTO REALITY.

THE THREE WORKED ON A PROTOTYPE AND FOUND

A COMPANY IN NEW JERSEY TO GIVE THEM A HAND IN HAVING IT BUILT.

THE GAME IS PRETTY MUCH THE SAME. YOU PUT A BUCK OR TWO

IN. AND WORK YOUR MAGIC. TRYING TO PICK UP ONE OF THE 38-BOTTLES.

"Everyone is competitive to a certain degree whether they want to admit it or not and this brings out the best in people I think."

THE THREE ARE A LITTLE SURPRISED NO ONE HAS LATCHED ON TO THIS IDEA ALREADY. AFTER ALL, THE GAME HAS BEEN AROUND FOR DECADES.

"And so many inventions I see and I'm like, gosh - why didn't we think of that? "

ONLY THIS TIME. THEY DID THINK IT.HELD ON.AND GOT THEIR PRIZE.

"So many great ideas never come to life because people just aren't willing to take that leap of faith. And we just said, you know, if it failed at least we had fun and at the very least we each have a Brew Buckit in our basement." Return to index of stories...

YOU'VE PROBABLY NEVER GIVEN YOUR THYROID A SECOND THOUGHT.

THAT IS UNLESS IT BECOMES PROBLEMATIC.

MILLIONS OF AMERICANS, SUFFER FROM AN OVERACTIVE THYROID. THE MOST COMMON DISORDER AFFECTING WOMEN.

IN TODAYS HEALTH MATTERS. AMY OSHIER REPORTS ON 'A GRAVE CONCERN' Return to index of stories...

HEALTH MATTERS-PKG

GRAVE'S DISEASE- IT MAY BE ONE OF THE MOST COMMON DISEASES YOU'VE

NEVER HEARD OF. FOR YOUNG WOMEN IN PARTICULAR IT CAN BE A GRAVE

CONCERN.

DR. HEITHAM AJLOUNI/ENDOCRINOLOGIST

RUNS:

3:39 Graves' Disease is one of the most common disease in females. So the ratio from

male to female is like 8 females/1 male. And usually it affects young around the age of

20.

AN AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE THE BODY ATTACKS ITSELF. IN GRAVE'S THE

THYROID GLAND OVER-PRODUCES HORMONES THAT IMPACT METABOLISM.

DR. HEITHAM AJLOUNI/ENDOCRINOLOGIST

RUNS:

2:38 You will start losing weight regardless of your appetite. The other thing you have is

fast heartbeat. You have changes of your hair and skin. You will have heat intolerance,

excess of sweating. Graves' Disease affect the eye, so their eyeball will protrude.

PATIENTS ARE QUICK TO REALIZE SOMETHING'S WRONG. IF IT'S NOT

TREATED, THE DISEASE CAN HAVE SERIOUS CONSEQUENCES.

DR. HEITHAM AJLOUNI/ENDOCRINOLOGIST

RUNS:

4:11 One of the most important thing it affects- the heart. When you have palpitations

you are prone to something called arrhythmias. And this is life-threatening. If you are

not treated, it will affect your bones. They are more prone to osteoporosis.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

7:25 There are two fundamental ways to treat Graves' Disease. One is taking

medications to regulate hormones. It requires frequent checkups to manage dosing.

The other option is to remove or disable the thyroid. By surgery, or what is more

common today, taking radioactive iodine.

DR. HEITHAM AJLOUNI/ENDOCRINOLOGIST

RUNS:

6:22 We are giving a dose of radioactive iodine that will shut down your thyroid and

you will end up having hypothyroid, under-active thyroid. And you will be taking

levothyroxine for the rest of your life. It doesn't have a lot of side effects. It's easy to

control, less frequent visits to your doctors, less frequent blood tests, and if you want to

conceive, it's easier to control while pregnant.

A GRAVES' DIAGNOSIS MEANS A LIFETIME OF MEDICAL MANAGEMENT- BUT IN

MANAGING HORMONES, WOMEN CAN FIND BALANCE IN THEIR LIVES. FOR LEE

MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...
