FIRST WEATHER-WX ANI

LIMITED RAIN CHANCES TODAY

Monday will again be dominated by an onshore wind flow. That means we have the chance for a few showers to move in from the Gulf of Mexico early this morning through the midday time frame. Coverage of rain should remain isolated and located mainly in areas west of Interstate 75, but you will want to note that in your plans, especially if headed to the beaches.

By the afternoon, the impacts of some relatively drier air in the mid-levels of the atmosphere will help to keep much of the region rather dry compared to what is considered normal for a late July day. Any stray rain or thunder that would be able to develop on Monday would most likely be in communities well to the east of the I-75 corridor. The vast majority of us will see mostly sunny skies this afternoon.

Temperatures on Today will range from the upper 80s along the coastal cities like Naples, to the low and mid 90s in Fort Myers and Punta Gorda.

Communities like Lehigh Acres, Immokalee and Golden Gate will have a better opportunity for seeing temperatures top 94 on Monday afternoon.

Tuesday's weather could again be met with a morning shower or two along the coastline, but once again a good chunk of the afternoon should remain rather dry.

Showers and a few thunderstorms return to the forecast by Wednesday with a highs in the lower 90s in the afternoon.

TROPICAL UPDATE

A tropical wave noted on satellite 550 miles southwest of the Cape Verde Islands will be monitored for possible development this week. As of now, the National Hurricane Center is giving this disturbance a 30% chance of development in the next two days. However, the feature is moving into an area of the Atlantic Ocean that is a bit more favorable for storms. Over the next 5 days, there is a 70% chance for this system to develop. We will continue to monitor the situation and bring you updates throughout the week.

Other than the previously mentioned tropical wave, there are no tropical cyclones active in the Gulf of Mexico or Caribbean Sea and none are expected to develop within the next two days. Return to index of stories...

A 17-year-old girl has been found dead after a shooting at a movie theater in Bradenton.

Witnesses say Teria'le Rawls was shot early Monday morning during a fight in the parking lot of the Royal Palm Theater, south of St. Petersburg in Manatee County.

The victim was pronounced dead just after 2:00 a.m. when the car that was rushing her to a hospital in nearby Sarasota was pulled over.

The scene of the shooting has a history of violence. On Christmas night 2010, Manatee County deputies had to call in back-up to quell a near-riot when they arrested five people.

THE DALAI LAMA AND PRESIDENT OBAMA DO IT. NOT TO MENTION THE COOLER KIDS AMONG US.

NOW EXPERTS ARE SUGGESTING THE "FIST BUMP" MAY BE MORE HYGIENIC THAN HANDSHAKES WHEN DOCTORS GREET THEIR PATIENTS.

"We're all just little petri dishes walking around."

INFECTION PREVENTION EXPERT DR. MARY LOU MANNING SAYS OUR HANDS ARE COVERED WITH BACTERIA -- MOST OF IT'S PERFECTLY SAFE.

BUT THERE ARE ALSO POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS STAPH AND VIRUSES LIKE THE FLU.

"For most patients, it won't be a problem, but for some, it will, and you just never know who those patients might be."

HANDS ARE NOTORIOUS FOR PASSING ALONG GERMS BECAUSE WE TOUCH EVERYTHING WITH THEM -- INCLUDING OUR MOUTHS AND EYES.

A NEW STUDY FINDS THE HANDSHAKE TRANSMITS DOUBLE THE AMOUNT OF BACTERIA A HIGH FIVE WOULD. THE FIST BUMP TRANSMITS EVEN FEWER.

STILL -- SOME EXPERTS SAY A HANDS OFF APPROACH MAY BE SAFEST FOR PATIENTS.

"Rather than replace the handshake with something else that has contact, probably the better approach to keep patients safe is really not to do it at all."

ESPECIALLY FOR PATIENTS WHO NEED TO BE HANDLED WITH CARE.

FREON FRENZY-PKG

WHEN THE AIR CONDITIONING REPAIRMAN SHOWS UP. BRACE YOURSELF FOR THE BILL.EVEN IF IT'S JUST TO REPLACE THE FREON.

"We saw areas of the country where it was as low as $40 a pound all the up to $125 a pound."

ANGIE'S LIST FOUNDER ANGIE HICKS. JUST COMPLETED SOME RESEARCH ON AIR CONDITIONERS, ESPECIALLY NOW THAT R-22 FREON IS BEING PHASED OUT.

"This process started in 2004 and it will be completely banned by 2020."

IT'LL BE REPLACED BY A NEW, MORE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY REFRIGERANT CALLED R-410A.

BUT WHAT TO DO IF YOUR R-22 AIR CONDITIONER CONKS OFF RIGHT NOW?REPAIR OR REPLACE IT?

ANGIE SAYS.USE THE RULE OF FIVE-THOUSAND.

"If you find out how much the repair is going to be and the number of years old your air conditioner is, if the two multiplied together add up to more than $5,000, you should go ahead and replace your unit"

SO IT'S CHEAPER TO REPLACE AN 8-YEAR OLD UNIT.NEEDING $2,000 IN REPAIR.

BUT THE AVERAGE AIR CONDITIONER SHOULD LAST ABOUT 16 YEARS. AND THE NEWER ONES ARE ALREADY EQUIPPED TO RUN ON THE NEWER REFRIGERANT.
