Today's Weather Story

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

LIMITED RAIN CHANCES TODAY

Monday will again be dominated by an onshore wind flow. That means we have the chance for a few showers to move in from the Gulf of Mexico early this morning through the midday time frame. Coverage of rain should remain isolated and located mainly in areas west of Interstate 75, but you will want to note that in your plans, especially if headed to the beaches.

By the afternoon, the impacts of some relatively drier air in the mid-levels of the atmosphere will help to keep much of the region rather dry compared to what is considered normal for a late July day. Any stray rain or thunder that would be able to develop on Monday would most likely be in communities well to the east of the I-75 corridor. The vast majority of us will see mostly sunny skies this afternoon.

Temperatures on Today will range from the upper 80s along the coastal cities like Naples, to the low and mid 90s in Fort Myers and Punta Gorda.

Communities like Lehigh Acres, Immokalee and Golden Gate will have a better opportunity for seeing temperatures top 94 on Monday afternoon.

Tuesday's weather could again be met with a morning shower or two along the coastline, but once again a good chunk of the afternoon should remain rather dry.

Showers and a few thunderstorms return to the forecast by Wednesday with a highs in the lower 90s in the afternoon.

TROPICAL UPDATE

A tropical wave noted on satellite 550 miles southwest of the Cape Verde Islands will be monitored for possible development this week. As of now, the National Hurricane Center is giving this disturbance a 30% chance of development in the next two days. However, the feature is moving into an area of the Atlantic Ocean that is a bit more favorable for storms. Over the next 5 days, there is a 70% chance for this system to develop. We will continue to monitor the situation and bring you updates throughout the week.

Other than the previously mentioned tropical wave, there are no tropical cyclones active in the Gulf of Mexico or Caribbean Sea and none are expected to develop within the next two days. Return to index of stories...

THE BIG PICTURE ON POT-PKG

NATS

ALL ACROSS THE COUNTRY, PEOPLE ARE USING POT WITH FEWER LEGAL CONSEQUENCES, COLORADO AND WASHINGTON BECOMING THE FIRST TWO STATES TO LEGALIZE MARIJUANA FOR RECREATIONAL PURPOSES.

AND TODAY, THE NEW YORK TIMES SAID THE COUNTRY NEEDS TO GO FURTHER. IN A LONG EDITORIAL THE PAPER WROTE:

"THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SHOULD REPEAL THE BAN ON MARIJUANA."

NATS OF PROHIBITION

COMPARING IT TO THE DAYS OF PROHIBITION, THE PAPER ARGUES THAT LIKE IN THAT PERIOD, OTHERWISE LAW ABIDING CITIZENS TODAY ARE BECOMING CRIMINALS.

SOT DAVID FIRESTONE:

"3-4 BILLION DOLLARS A YEAR IS SPENT ON THIS AND THERE ARE 600 THOUSAND 700 THOUSAND MARIJUANA POSSESSION ARRESTS A YEAR.

THE REACTION WAS SWIFT, AND HEATED.

MOS

IT'S ALL A REFLECTION OF HOW THE NATION'S OPINIONS ABOUT POT, HAVE CHANGED.

REWIND TO 1992, WHEN BILL CLINTON RAN FOR PRESIDENT AND HIS USE OF MARIJUANA WAS A POLITICAL LIABILITY.

SOT CLINTON:

I DIDN'T LIKE IT, DIDN'T INHALE IT, AND NEVER TRIED IT AGAIN.

COMPARE THAT TO CANDIDATE BARACK OBAMA IN 2008, WHO OPENLY ADMITTED TO SMOKING AND INHALING.

NATS CAMPAIGNING

36 STATES PLUS D.C. HAVE LOOSENED MARIJUANA LAWS, AND POLLS SHOW MORE THAN 50 PERCENT OF AMERICANS NOW THINK IT SHOULD BE LEGALIZED.

SOT:

WE DON'T ENCOURAGE IT. WE THINK THEY SHOULD HAVE THE CHOICE.

BUT "THE TIMES" ARGUES THAT IT SHOULD STILL BE OFF LIMITS TO THOSE UNDER 21.

IN AN INTERVIEW FOR "MEET THE PRESS," FORMER CONGRESSMAN PATRICK KENNEDY WHO HAS ADMITTED TO BATTLING DRUG ADDICTION, SAID LEGALIZING MARIJUANA IS A SLIPPERY SLOPE.

SOT:

IT ULTIMATELY WILL SET UP A MARKETPLACE FOR THE COMMERCIALIZATION. AND WITH THE COMMERCIALIZATION, YOU'RE GONNA HAVE A MARKETING CAMPAIGN TARGETING KIDS.

A CONCERN SHARED BY SOME OTHER PARENTS.

SOT RUTH MARCUS:

WE DO NOT KNOW THE OUTCOME EXCEPT THAT THE BEST EVIDENCE IS THAT YOU LOSE, IF YOU USE MARIJUANA AS A TEENAGER REGULARLY, EIGHT IQ POINTS. AND I DON'T KNOW ABOUT THE REST OF THE TABLE, BUT I DON'T HAVE EIGHT TO LOSE. Return to index of stories...
