FIRST WX-WX ANI

We'll be dodging downpours through this Tuesday evening as spotty rain continues to roam in from the Gulf of Mexico. Some of the rain may be quite heavy, and a few of these downpours could also produce lightning along with gusty winds.

We'll keep rain chances in play through the overnight into Wednesday morning as our winds continue to come in from the Gulf, which is a weather pattern that favors morning showers.

Aside from seeing scattered rain through the next couple of days, expect a partly sunny sky with temperatures topping out in the upper 80s to lower 90s.

Some isolated rain will be possible again Thursday morning, and then we transition into seeing more of an afternoon storm pattern by Friday and into the upcoming weekend.

TROPICAL UPDATE

We're tracking a tropical wave in the central Atlantic that's been becoming better organized over the last couple of days.

It's a good possibility that this feature will develop into a tropical depression or perhaps even a tropical storm over the next couple days.

The track through the end of the week will be west and northwest, taking this feature toward the Windward Islands by the weekend.

Most forecast models suggest this storm eventually curve to the north by next week, which would keep the storm away from the U.S. mainland. Return to index of stories...

WE'VE SEEN HISTORICALLY LOW INTEREST RATES FOR THE LAST THREE YEARS.

MANY ANALYSTS FEEL INTEREST RATES WILL BEGIN TRENDING UPWARD LATER ON THIS YEAR - AND THAT COULD BE BAD NEWS FOR BOND INVESTORS.

FINANCIAL ADVISOR JIM NOLTE IS HERE IN OUR STUDIO - SO JIM, WHY IS THE LONG-TERM OUTLOOK FOR BONDS NEGATIVE AND SHOULD INVESTORS SELL THEIR BONDS NOW? Return to index of stories...

WELLS FARGO-PLASMA CG

· The fact is, the bond market moves inversely to interest rates. It's like a teeter totter, one side goes up the other side goes down. When interest rates bond prices go up. That's a bull market in bonds. When interest rates go up bond prices go down. That's a bear market in bonds.

· Rising or falling interest rates affect different areas of the bond market in a different manner. Long-term bond prices are dramatically affected by this inverse relationship. Intermediate bond prices are moderately affected by this inverse relationship short-term bond prices are modestly affected by this inverse relationship.

· In other words in a rising interest rate environment, not all bonds are bad.

· Interest rates peaked in 1983 and for the next 30 years they steadily declined. It was a good time to own long-term bonds.

· As interest rates begin to trend upward, bond investors have to be very selective. Bond investors need to consider five things today.

· Performance, diversification, volatility, yield and liquidity.

· Let's talk about performance. When reviewing your bond portfolio I suggest you consider the total return picture. Even in a rising interest rate environment I would expect a diversified bond portfolio to outperform cash alternatives.

· Investors need to focus on the purpose of fixed income in a portfolio. Bonds provide a steady and dependable income flow.

· Diversification is the basis of a successful investment program. Bonds play an important role in diversifying a portfolio. The bond portion of your portfolio can help you prepare for what is happening now, what may happen next and what could happen later.

· It's also important that the bond portion of your portfolio is diversified across fixed income investments and should include corporate bonds, treasury bonds and exposure to international bond markets.

· Bonds, when used properly as part of a diversified investment strategy, can help reduce the volatility of your returns.

· Yield is always a major consideration when investing in bonds. Generally speaking, the longer the maturity, the higher the yield. This is known as the yield curve. In a rising interest rate environment, investors have to be particularly careful. The highest yield available could be a very poor total return investment. This presents a real challenge for income investors because short-term investments have yields of 1% or less.

· Portfolio liquidity is always a very important consideration. Using bonds in our investment strategy can help us plan for liquidity needs. Individual bonds have a specific maturity date at which time the principle of the bond is returned to the investor. If you anticipate that you need cash for a significant purchase down the road, buying bonds with a maturity near the time when you'll need the money can be an effective way to stay invested in the market while maintaining the peace of mind that your funds will be available when needed.

· Generally speaking a person's risk profile is defined by the percentage of his investments that are invested in equities versus the percentage that are invested in fixed income. In today's environment a "balanced portfolio" consists of 50 to 60% invested in equities and 40 to 50% invested in fixed income.

· Because of the potential of rising interest rates over the next few years we currently suggest a very limited exposure to long term bonds. I believe the sweet spot in this market environment for fixed income is the short to intermediate maturity range.

· In today's market the highest yielding bond is probably not the best investment to make. Return to index of stories...

REBECCA COLUMBUS WALKS….

REBECCA COLUMBUS/WALKER

RUNS:

:15 First thing in the morning, take the dogs out. The last thing at night after dinner.

A LOT.

REBECCA COLUMBUS/WALKER

RUNS:

:57 Probably between two and three hours.

HITTING THE PAVEMENT DOESN'T REQUIRE A GYM MEMBERSHIP OR SPECIALLY TRAINING. BUT EXPERTS AGREE, IT'S ONE OF THE BEST STEPS YOU CAN TAKE FOR YOUR HEALTH.

DR. SAL LACAGNINA/VP HEALTH & WELLNESS

RUNS:

1:09 We have such an epidemic of weight problems and chronic disease with diabetes and high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. And so this is one easy way to really get back on track with your health.

ANY WALKING, DESPITE DISTANCE OR SPEED IS A GOOD START. BUT ONE HEALTH STAT MIGHT STOP YOU IN YOUR TRACKS:

DR. SAL LACAGNINA/VP HEALTH & WELLNESS

RUNS:

4:17 The Heart Association recommendation is 10,000 steps a day for most people that are you know physically fit. So when you think about that, that is a lot of walking, it's five miles a day.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

In the normal course of a day- living and working- people take between 9-hundred and 3-thousand steps. Making it nearly impossible to get to the 10,000 milestone- without intentional effort.

DR. SAL LACAGNINA/VP HEALTH & WELLNESS

RUNS:

4:28 Make every excuse to do something physical during the day. Just walk the halls instead of sitting behind your desk on a conference call. A lot of people are doing some other interesting things like doing 'walking meetings'. So instead of sitting down they have everybody walk.

STEPPING AWAY FROM ROUTINES IS THE KEY FOR REBECCA.

REBECCA COLUMBUS/WALKER

RUNS:

:57 I work on the second floor so I go up and down the stairs. I make a point of you know instead of calling somebody downstairs, I get up and I walk down.

IF THIS IS YOUR FIRST TIME AROUND THE BLOCK, DON'T PUSH FOR THE 10,000. USE A STEP TRACKER TO SEE HOW YOU DO ON DIFFERENT DAYS. TAKE YOUR HIGHEST DAILY TOTAL AND MAKE IT YOUR GOAL FOR THE FOLLOWING WEEK.

DR. SAL LACAGNINA/VP HEALTH & WELLNESS

RUNS:

5:17 People that have a sedentary job and a sedentary life actually live a decreased number of years. So being sedentary is a significant health risk.

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-CLIP

FORECAST OPEN Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

HIDDEN CONTRACTS-ONCAM

WHEN IS THE LAST TIME YOU SIGNED A CONTRACT?

MONTHS AGO, YEARS AGO, NEVER?

THINK AGAIN.

WE ARE BASICALLY ENTERING INTO A CONTRACT EVERY TIME WE GO ONLINE AND CLICK THE "I AGREE" BUTTON.

AND WHAT EXACTLY ARE YOU AGREEING *TO?

BOB HANSEN REVEALS SOME OF THE HIDDEN LEGALITIES. Return to index of stories...

HIDDEN CONTRACTS-PKG

IT'S DOESN'T TAKE A PIECE OF PAPER TO CREATE A BINDING AGREEMENT.

THESE DAYS, ALL IT TAKES IS CLICKING ON TWO WORDS ON THE SCREEN OF YOUR COMPUTER, I AGREE.

"in general, that form, that click equals a signature on a page."

A LEGALLY BINDING AGREEMENT WITH THE CLICK OF A MOUSE.

AND CALIFORNIA WESTERN LAW PROFESSOR NANCY KIM SAYS MOST PEOPLE HAVE NO IDEA.

"people don't think they're entering a contract when they click accept, they don't even often realize they're doing that."

"but how many people actually read what's on the computer screen before they click, i agree?"

"maybe i read through it a little bit."

"it's legal stuff that just goes on and on and on and on."

"honestly, no."

AND IF YOU DON'T READ IT. YOU'LL HAVE NO IDEA WHAT'S IN IT.

"so it's no longer just the legal disclosures that are in those contracts, but things that actually take away rights that consumers would otherwise have."

PROFESSOR KIM SAYS THAT CAN INCLUDE GIVING UP THE RIGHT TO GO TO COURT OR FILE A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT.

GIVING UP RIGHTS TO YOUR PERSONAL PICTURES OR INFORMATION.

RIGHTS TO GET A REFUND.

EVEN BLOCKING YOUR RIGHT TO LEAVE NEGATIVE COMMENTS ABOUT THE COMPANY.

"you can't complain about it on any social media, i've seen that on several websites."

"you get board about two, three lines into it so just skip it."

AND THAT'S WHY IT IS SUCH A TEMPTATION FOR SOME ONLINE COMPANIES. A WAY TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF CONSUMER WHO DON'T READ THE FINE PRINT. AND YET ARE BOUND BY IT JUST THE SAME.

"they are taking away rights under cover of consent. because you consented when you clicked agree. and courts are going along with it." Return to index of stories...
